Prelude to an Explosion of Madness (
Plot[]
One day a while back, Komekko went to play at her usual place, where she saw a large "goblin". The "goblin" explained that he is Host, a high-level demon and the right hand of the Dark God Wolbach, who was trying to break the seal and free his mistress. Seeing him trying to figure out a puzzle ball, Komekko took and quickly solved it. She continued to help Host and brought him a "sacrificial chicken and its chick" in the form of chicken and egg rice snatched from Bukkororii, but Host complained that it's just lunch and decided to go find a chicken himself. While waiting for Host to be back, Komekko saw a black cat emerging before her. She defeated it by biting on it, and brought it home to be her and Megumin's dinner.
In the present day, when the seal is weakened and demons attack the village, Megumin along with Yunyun find that Megumin's home was attacked and Komekko is missing. Going back outside, they see two demons trying to take Inky. Megumin considers Inky to be dead already and wants to use its sacrifice to go and look for her sister, but Yunyun intends that they try helping Inky. Megumin thus takes her dagger and throws it at the demons but misses, before the two demons fly off, taking Inky with them.
Megumin then thinks of where Komekko could be and recalls the Tomb of the Dark God. As they head there, they see Komekko threatening the demons to return her "food" Inky. Megumin brings out her adventure card and prepares to invest her points in different magic, knowing it may take her decades to then learn Explosion Magic. Seeing her, Yunyun takes out her Adventure Card and learns new magic. She then attacks the demons with Lightning and saves Komekko. She tells the two sisters to run and find the adults, while she tries to save Inky as well. While they run, Megumin notes that Lightning is Intermediate Magic and since she learned it, she will have to graduate now, following which she will no longer have easy access to skill-up potions, and in order to learn Advanced Magic she will have to level up by fighting monsters.
Megumin decides to head back and help Yunyun, though when she returns, she sees Yunyun taking back Inky and easily defeating the demons but collapses from exhaustion and cannot move. Megumin and Yunyun then argue who helped who, but then they see more demons heading their way. Yunyun then realizes that the adults, believing nobody to be there, are herding the demons their way before going all out with crazy powerful advanced magic. Meanwhile, Megumin remembers how the monsters started attacking them only after Inky showed up and kept attacking Megumin only when Inky was with her.
Megumin then makes up her mind and decides to learn new magic to protect Yunyun and Komekko, yet as she looks at her adventurer card, she sees that she can learn Explosion Magic. She then recalls that she had killed a Duxion a bit earlier, which gave her enough points for the magic she needs. As a large group of demons approaches, Megumin chants the incantation her saviour once did, creating a large explosion and killing all the monsters. Seeing it, Megumin gets happy and excited, though she then collapses. The adults, seeing the explosion as well rush to them, where they find Megumin and Yunyun motionless on the ground, with Komekko and Inky watching over them.
The next day, Yunyun panics as she wonders what they should do, since the sealed goddess was freed due to the Explosion Magic. It turns out that Megumin kept it a secret from most of the adults about Komekko being the one that broke the seal as well as her learning Explosion magic. The two later visits Soketto, who decides to tell Megumin's fortune. She sees that Megumin will go to Axel, the town of rookie adventurers, and will find wonderful new friends. However, seeing what comes after that, Soketto decides to remain silent.
Megumin and Yunyun then graduate from school. Megumin intends to go on a journey but needs to gather some money first. She doesn't want to leave Inky, but bringing it home is dangerous as she doesn't know when Komekko may decide to eat it. Yunyun then proposes to form a pact with Inky and make it her familiar, and that way Komekko won't eat her. Megumin likes the idea of having a dark god as a servant and states it should give her a proper name. Thinking for a bit, Megumin then decides to name the cat Chomusuke.
Characters[]
Differences to other versions[]
- The puzzles in the Light Novel take the form of flat jigsaw puzzles solved on the pedestal at the base of the tomb instead of the balls in the Anime.
- The parts about Komekko demanding food from Host and trying to hunt One-Punch Bears as well as telling him about the aftermath of the battle with the demons in the Light Novel were omitted.
- In the Light Novel, Megumin snatches Yunyun's short sword to fatally stab a Servant of the Dark God rummaging through her home.
Trivia[]
- In the initial television broadcast, the opening theme was omitted because there weren't enough air time to fit in all the themes given the amount of plot. The opening and ending themes with their footages were properly placed in their right spots in the BD versions later sold.
