An Eternal Rest for the Master of This Lake! (この
Synopsis[]
Kazuma and his friends attempt to defeat Coulomb's Hydra but fail due to low-level adventurers, a bandit spree, and a bounty. However, for some reason, Darkness insists on defeating the Hydra.
Plot[]
Eris taunts Kazuma regarding his pitiful death just for the heck of imitating the famous game over line in Japan, following which Aqua declares his body Resurrected. Kazuma subsequently wakes to Aqua screwing her face in disgust because of the slime from the Kowloon Hidra's stomach covering his naked body, and discovers that all his clothes and gear except for Chunchunmaru had been dissolved. As a limply lying Megumin grumbles at Aqua over her calling the name of the katana weird, Kazuma tries cheering up the Darkness moping at the side, who had jumped into the Hydra's stomach for retrieving his swallowed body, to clean off the slime covering them, only to be chided by Aqua for doing so naked, while Megumin questions if he is a pervert.
He soon returns to Axel with the others while wrapped in Megumin's cloak, and as Aqua, whose purifying of the lake had made the Kowloon Hydra dormant, takes a skeptical Megumin to the Guild for reporting about their failed quest, Kazuma and Darkness head away to wash off the slime. In the bathroom of their mansion later on, Kazuma wonders if his body that had 30% of it dissolved was really restored especially his important parts, when Darkness asks from outside the door if he is mad at her. Trying to placate the apologetic Darkness who is reluctant to reveal the reason she needs to defeat the Hydra now, he proposes making a new plan for fighting it some other day. Despite initially feeling apprehensive, once Kazuma starts goading her by citing her duties as a knight defending the people, Darkness resolutely declares her determination to slay the Hydra.
When the pair shows up at the Guild afterwards, they are greeted by a scene of mayhem, in which Morgan, Sakamaki, and Yunyun grill Aqua and Megumin over them provoking the Kowloon Hydra. Luna next tells them about the knights, who are supposed to arrive from the Royal Capital for defeating the Hydra, unable to deploy because they are busy looking for the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade. While Kazuma and Darkness fearfully look at a wanted poster with a sketch of him and Chris in their thief outfits, the receptionist secretly informs them and Rin of a prominent Crimson Demon fortune teller divining the culprit to be in Axel. With other adventurers and even Darkness reacting to the two hundred million eris reward amount, contrary to Megumin simply getting overjoyed at the thieves she admires being in town, Luna asks for them especially Kazuma to help catch the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade so that the knights can come help out against the Hydra.
Several days later, Kazuma shutting himself up at home for avoiding capture busies himself with petting Chomusuke, before teasing Aqua over her insistence on "prenatal education" through singing lullabies and providing magical power to Emperor Zel's egg. Megumin bursting in with Darkness next suggests repeated usage of Explosions like in the battle against the Destroyer for overcoming the Kowloon Hydra's extraordinary regenerative abilities, only to have Aqua refuse having her magical powers drained by the skill of a Lich, before Megumin explains about her wanting to take revenge against the Hydra because it had killed Kazuma.
In spite of the rainy season empowering the Hydra, Megumin with Darkness escorting goes casting daily Explosions at it for several days, yet fails to permanently harm the monster Darkness is still insistent on slaying, and in response to Kazuma lazing around with Chomusuke angrily snatches her cat back. A few more days of Explosions, however, sees the Hydra growing smarter, as evidenced by it one day swallowing Darkness in a surprise attack before letting her crawl back out when hit by Megumin's Explosion. Aqua thus Heals the half-dead Darkness back at the mansion, and Kazuma while she bathes repairs her cracked armour like he had done on their way to Arcanletia, though this topic sets off a party dispute regarding the craziness of Megumin and the Axis Order.
Even though Kazuma advises her not to fight the Hydra again, that doesn't stop her from sneaking out the following morning. Upon being notified about it by Megumin and Aqua, the latter of whom willingly puts the egg in the care of Wiz's Shop so they can go stop Darkness, Kazuma finally makes up his mind to take matters into his own hands, while the Ruffian mumbles about the weather making his old wound act up. Then as Darkness drags her feet towards the lake in spite of Aqua and Megumin grabbing onto her legs, she is surprised to see Kazuma at the head of other adventurers in Axel catching up. Initially mad at him for being the cause of them addressing her by her real name, the Crusader becomes grateful upon hearing how Kazuma had petitioned the adventurers at the Guild to assist with her endeavour.
Later as Aqua spams Blessings on the adventurers at the lakeside and contraptions are assembled, Kazuma signals for the adventurers to get into position and make preparations as their plan commences, starting with Darkness attracting the Hydra's attention with Decoy. When the Hydra is trying to bite at Darkness who runs along the shoreline, the Thieves among the adventurers quickly seize the opportunity to Bind the Hydra's heads together with special steel wire attached to big iron balls, following which the Archers using a ballista shoot hooked arrows tied to trailing wires so that they latch onto the binding wires, and consequently create many wires for the tough adventurers to drag the Hydra towards the shore from a safe distance.
Meanwhile, Kazuma using the spring board constructed by Sedol, Heinz, and Galil gets catapulted onto the Hydra's back, before enacting a full-power Drain Touch to deprive it of the magical power strengthening the monster. Despite his skill allowing the other adventurers to drag the Hydra ashore, the bucking monster manages to throw Kazuma off onto the ground, and then rolls its body over in an attempt to squash him. The nearby Darkness immediately rushes over, and in the nick of time positions herself over Kazuma so that she can keep the crushing weight of the Hydra off him. Surprised at Darkness' strength and endurance, Kazuma resumes Draining the Hydra's magical power, which Darkness who presently rejoices being in such an awkward position had worn down over the span of many days.
While the other adventurers struggle to hold the Hydra in place as Darkness despite Kazuma's encouragement begins to falter, Dust who wants to claim the kill attacks the monster against the advice of Rin, and ends up getting eaten. With the distracted Hydra shifting its bulk, Kazuma is able to drag Darkness out from under it, following which Yunyun casts Light of Saber to decapitate the head that ate Dust so his body can emerge from the severed neck. Noticing the Hydra unable to regenerate the lost head because of insufficient magical power, Kazuma immediately calls on the wizards to transfer their magical powers to Megumin, who finishes the Hydra off with a spectacular Explosion.
Back at the Guild where the celebrating adventurers praise Kazuma for his leadership, Dust who got Resurrected by Aqua is mocked by his party members for his idiocy, and Megumin argues with Yunyun over who did more work during the battle, Darkness who now has her hesitations cleared tells Kazuma of how she made up her mind to fearlessly face whatever comes next for the sake of the town she had grown to love, subsequent to which Aqua pesters Dust who expressed gratitude over bringing him back to life for more praise until the delinquent had to shove her back to Kazuma.
Kazuma, Aqua, and Megumin proceed to party late into the night, yet when they return to their mansion with various souvenirs, the only one they find is Chomusuke while there is no sign of Darkness. The trio accordingly discovers a letter left behind by Darkness, who after thanking them for all their happy adventuring days, declared her decision of leaving the party for good.

Differences to other versions[]
- Kazuma after dying in the light novel has a much longer conversation with Eris:
- He gets informed about what happened after his death, then grumbles about the Hydra regenerating the heads it had lost to Megumin's Explosion, before Eris asks him to forgive Darkness because she has her own woes for fighting the Hydra.
- Upon Eris informing him about her sneaking to the living world using a cover identity whom he had already met, Kazuma wildly guesses it to be Maris and Seris, then as he later gets pushed back to life, notices a familiar scar on the goddess' cheek.
- In the light novel, Aqua also has to apologise at the Guild for purifying a fishmonger's water tanks and killing the fishes inside, and Luna expresses the Guild's plan to hire Vanir for divining the Silver-Haired Thief Brigade's whereabouts, prompting Kazuma to stay close to Aqua so that her divine aura can hide him from the All-Seeing Demon's sight.
- Following the time Darkness got swallowed by the Hydra's surprise attack, the others in the light novel lock her up inside her room and take turns standing vigil to stop the Crusader from challenging the monster again, only to have her slip out when Aqua dozes off, at which Kazuma instructs the other girls to collect her battered form back while he goes off to the Guild for recruiting.
- In the light novel, Darkness sneaking out to fight the Hydra occurs on the day preceding the final showdown, with the other adventurers already assembled at the lake in wait of her arriving in the accompaniment of Aqua and Megumin, following which Aqua jumps into the lake and prematurely lures the Hydra out before she is told to stand aside by Kazuma so that Darkness having drawn its attention can tank the monster's attacks.
- The Thieves' iron ball, the Archers' ballista, the spring board, and the accumulation of magic by the wizards are anime-only features, since in the light novel the Thieves just throw out lengths of wire, the Archers simply shoot their hooked arrows at the Hydra using their own bows, while Kazuma Lurks towards the monster before crawling onto its back himself, and the wizards later blast the Hydra with their own spells.
- The anime's depiction about Dust's death follows that of the main light novel series, which slightly differs to that as portrayed by the chapter describing the battle against the Kowloon Hydra in the spin-off light novel from Dust's point of view.
- After the Hydra was drained so much it couldn't regenerate the head cut off by Yunyun, in the light novel she unleashed another Light of Saber to cut off one more head, before Megumin took out the remaining six with her Explosion.
- The interactions during the after-action celebrations at the Guild in the anime occur on the adventurers' way back to Axel in the light novel.
- In the light novel, Luna hands the adventurers their rewards the day after they vanquished the Kowloon Hydra and prompts them to spend the day partying at the Guild, and that night Kazuma's party sans Darkness prepare a crab pot for dinner only for their Crusader to remain absent for days, before they receive the letter about her leaving the party.
Trivia[]
- The taunting monologue Eris utters upon Kazuma's death is derived from the game over line in Dragon Quest Ⅱ.
- Megumin's question at the episode's beginning over whether Kazuma is a pervert seemingly gets answered by the first words in the ensuing opening's lyrics.
