Guardians of the Crimson Demon Village (紅魔(こうま)(さと)守護者達(ガーディアンズ), Kōma no Sato no Gādianzu) is the third episode of the KonoSuba Bakuen anime, which covers Chapters 2 to 3 in Volume 1 of the light novels, or Chapter 3 to Chapter 4 of the manga.

Plot[]

The girls keep enjoying the presence of Megumin, the cat, however, that keeps annoying Megumin and tells them they should give the cat a proper name. Yunyun tries to explain that they already accepted the cat being Megumin and suggest that Megumin herself changes her name. As Megumin gets angry and refuses, Yunyun proposes "Ink", since the cat is black and the girls accept it, noting that weird names are easy to remember. Megumin agrees to call it Ink too, noting that she will give him a better name if he were to become her familiar one day. Pucchin shows up and explains that the monsters in the area are active again and the adults are heading out to deal with them. Because of that, the afternoon class will be free study in the library.

At the library, Megumin after studying a tome listing the disadvantages of Explosion Magic finds a book called The Unfettered Lord and gets interested. She sees that Yunyun got the second volume and asks her if she can give it to her, but instead gets handed a book about fish being friends too. Wondering why Yunyun is even reading that, Megumin is next shown another book claiming of plants having hearts and able to become friends too. Realizing she is that desperate for having a friend, Megumin tries to tell her to drop the rival claim and become her friend, however before she is able to say it, Funifura and Dodonko show up and see that Yunyun is reading those weird books again. Funifura then states if Yunyun wants to have a friend so badly, then they can be her friends. Yunyun gets super excited and quickly accepts the offer.

While talking about love, Funifura and Dodonko give Yunyun a new hair style using hair ties. A spider lands on Megumin's book and as she gets annoyed that she can't hit him, she starts snapping hair ties at him. As she runs out of them, she takes the ones from Yunyun's hair and manages to hit and defeat the spider. Yunyun is angry as she ruined her hair style and scolds Megumin. Yunyun then apologizes to Funifura, stating that she was ready never to change her hair style again, but Funifura tells her that would be too much.

In that moment, Bukkororii Teleports into the library, who explains that thanks to them leaving him in that situation, he managed to learn to teleport. However, as you can only register three readily available locations, the girls wonder why he chose the library as one. Bukkororii explains its due to nostalgia as here he was checking the books that Soketto checked out. He keeps explaining what books Soketto used to read and mentions that his other teleport location is in front of Soketto's house as he can't get inside. He tries to explain that he came to ask the girls for some advice, but as the girls find him to be a stalker, they start throwing books at him.

Bukkororii manages to grab Megumin and Yunyun and asks them for a favor. He brings them to Soketto's house and wants them to ask her what her type is. Megumin refuses and suggests that since she is a fortune-teller, he should pay her to read his romantic fortune. Bukkororii however explains that he doesn't have the money, otherwise he would have been visiting her each day. He promises to treat Megumin to a meal, the next time he has money and as Megumin includes her sister, she agrees to help him out.

While Soketto trains in the forest, Megumin comes up with a plan. Disguised Yunyun will threaten Soketto with a dagger and Bukkororii will save her. Yunyun finds the plan stupid and suggests them to defeat some monsters for a bounty, but both Megumin and Bukkororii refuse as the alternative is cooler. Bukkororii then becomes invisible using Light of Reflection, with Megumin stating that way he can save Soketto in the coolest timing possible. Bukkororii then sneaks next to Soketto, but she feels his presence and attacks him. As this keeps happening each day, Soketto is quite annoyed already. Megumin tells her that Bukkororii wants to tell her something and Soketto states she also wants to tell him something. She then states she didn't know he hated her so much and should have just told her, as its quite cowardly to try to ambush and attack her like this. Bukkororii tries to explain that isn't the case, but in that moment a pack of One-Punch Bears shows up. Soketto tells the girls she will protect them, and Bukkororii stands in front of her, stating he wants to protect her smile. However, as he only knows advanced magic, he uses Inferno to defeat the bears, but also caught Soketto in his magic. Soketto gets angry and beats him up after that.

They explain that Bukkororii went into the forest to earn money for a fortune-reading. Hearing that, Soketto states he should have told her and offers him the first session to be free. She asks him what he wants to know and Bukkororii asks about his future lover. Soketto then activates her crystal ball, stating that his future lover should appear there, however after a bit, nothing appears. Soketto is surprised as usually at least one person appears. Bukkororii then cries, stating that this hurts even more than if it was a rejection. The girls feel bad for him and Soketto tries to explain that her fortunes aren't always correct, but Bukkororii runs away crying. Soketto states that Bukkororii is a failure, but she finds him kind of interesting. The girls wonder if she can read her fortune, but Soketto explains that when it comes to her fortune, the crystal ball won't show anything.

Later, Yunyun wonders if thinks will work out for Bukkororii and Soketto. Megumin isn't sure, but states that Bukkororii needs to find a job first as he also still owes her a meal. Yunyun wonders if Megumin is only interested in food, but Megumin explains she has big ambitions and doesn't have time for romantic stuff. As she will be spending a lot of time with some party members, Megumin states that if she were to fall in love, it would be for some dashing, peerless hero. Pucchin shows up and informs the class that lower-level monsters are wandering around and until they fix the seal, they shouldn't walk home alone. Yunyun wonders what to do and Megumin is about to suggest that she will be her buddy, however Funifura and Dondonko suggest that Yunyun walk with them. Hearing that, Megumin just stands up and heads home. Moments later, Yunyun runs to her, offering to walk with her. Megumin wonders if Yunyun intends to protect her, but states that she is far more talented and Yunyun shouldn't underestimate her. Yunyun reminds her that Megumin hid behind her when the bears appeared. Megumin then prepares to fight Yunyun to settle things once and for all, but Ink then shows up and scares both of them. Megumin then suggested that she and Yunyun should walk home and grab some food on their way. Yunyun states they are rivals, and she knows she is after her food. However, as Megumin then heads alone, Yunyun states they can continue being rivals from tomorrow and runs after her.
