Arcanletia (アルカンレティア) is a city in Belzerg that serves as the patron city of the Goddess of Water Aqua and headquarters the Axis Order that worships her.[1]

Overview[]

Widely known as the City of Water and Hot Springs,[2] Arcanletia is also the headquarters of the infamous Axis Order, who uses aggressive methods and scams to convert new followers.[1] The sect is also responsible for the city's water control.[3]

The Eris Order also has a small presence in the city, owning a church far smaller then that of the Axis Order's. The local Eris followers suffer from constant harassment at the hands of the Axis cultists, and their church is often vandalized, both particularly by a certain beautiful Axis priestess.[4] They are also responsible for the main spring custody.[5]

Apart from the cathedral, the city has another temple for worshiping Aqua, although it got submerged in the lake long ago and was forgotten, until the lake began splitting itself daily to reveal it when Kazuma and his party returned to Arcanletia in their search for the cursed relic's replacement parts.[6]

History[]

Although the city is the headquarters of the Axis Order, the sect had problems converting tourists to their church, due to their not-so-cleaver schemes. It changed when the Crimson Demon Megumin taught more cunning and aggressive methods to the Axis Order in exchange of a roof and food.[3]

The city however suffered a series of incidents with their water supply, first when the Axis Order Pontiff Zesta accidentally mixed up the baking soda and the gelatinous slime mix while he was cleaning the distribution system.[7]

The city also became a target of the Devil King's Army, with the general Hans being sent to pollute the hot springs in order to bankrupt the Axis Order, who constantly torment and spread fake rumours about the Devil King.[8]

Although Kazuma's party during their trip to the hot springs uncovered the scheme and defeated Hans,[5] the battle resulted with Aqua purifying all of the hot springs, turning it into pure hot water with extremely potent holy properties.[9] Despite the locals initially infuriated with their main industry destroyed, it turned out that the holy water trade actually became more profitable than the hot springs were.[10]

A shard of Hans survived the battle with Kazuma's party despite having lost its memory, and commanded the Gelatinous Slime in town to steal food for him by traversing the springs' pipe system, until the Megumin Bandits eventually found and destroyed Hans right when he regained his memory.[4]

Under Zesta's order, the Axis Order eventually departed from Arcanletia to clear the way to the Devil King's Castle from its monsters for Aqua,[11], before joing the Anti-Devil King Army in the fight against the Devil King's Daughter.[12]

Trivia[]

  • There is a law in Arcanletia that forbids the Axis Order followers to come closer to children.[3]
  • As a tourist attraction, some Elves and Dwarves put up a show in the city, where they pretend to argue in order to entertain the tourists.[1]
  • Although the City has some weak monsters like goblins, there are more powerful ones, like the Beginner's Bane.[3]
  • In the initial web novel, Arcanletia was only the "City of Water" where the Axis Order is headquarted, and the "City of Hot Springs" was a separate tourist city called Doris that was situated between Arcanletia and Axel.
    • When the light novel came out, part of the tourist attractions in Doris, such as Elves arguing with Dwarves and the hot springs, were utilised for Arcanletia while others were used for Elroad.
    • The Axis Order discovered Aqua's divinity, much to their joy, when she purified the fish from the bottom of the lake to the surface for their dinner.
