The following is a timeline of events in the canon of the 3D Universe of the Grand Theft Auto series, in the order in which they occurred.

Note that the article does not include events from the 2D Universe and HD Universe games, as they are officially confirmed not to take place in the same canon. The timeline is not necessarily over after Grand Theft Auto III, as the events are followed by Rockstar North's Manhunt series.

• The Sweeney General Hospital is founded by the Trans-Plant company.

1869

• The FleischBerg brewery was founded in Blueberry and Blueberry Acres, Red County, San Andreas.
• The Liberty City Police Department and San Andreas Police Department were founded.

1872

• The Liberty City Fire Department is founded.

1877

• The last year that anyone was born in Florida, according to John F. Hickory.

1886

• The Statue of Liberty is built.

1888

• Ranch is founded.

1896

• The Vice City Port Authority was established in Viceport, Vice City.

• An unspecified armed conflict occurred, as commemorated by the Shoreside Vale War Memorial next to Francis International Airport in Liberty City.

1937

• Michelle is born in the Midwest.

1939

• Former mayor of Liberty City, Roger C. Hole is born.

1941

• Head Radio is founded.
• Child actor Jimmy is born.

1942

• The Los Santos International Airport begins accepting commercial flights after being converted from a Los Santos Air National Guard airfield.

1944

• The Time Ranger is taken off the air.

1946

• The episode of 'Moorehead Rides Again' entitled 'The Case of the Exploding Breasts' is originally released. It is sponsored by the Friendly Napalm Company and written by P.H. Walzow.

1950

• Dot is born.

1951

• Tommy Vercetti is born in Liberty City.

1952

• Moorehead Rides Again, a detective drama radio show was cancelled.

1953

• Francis International Airport in Shoreside Vale, Liberty City is opened for public use.
• Ken Rosenberg is born.
• Nurse Bob is born in the deep south of America.

1954

• Ray Machowski is born.
• July 29: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is established with the National Aeronautics and Space Act.

• Café Robina opens in Little Havana, Vice City.

1965

• Maccer is born in Salford, England.
• Kent Paul is born in Kent, England.

1966

• Mystique is born in Vice City, Florida.
• Jazz Mags was opened for business in Palomino Creek, Red County, San Andreas.
• Betty Feeley becomes a manager of American Motors.

1967

• The Truth bought his "Mothership".
• 700 hippies choke to death on toads in Blackfield, Las Venturas.

1968

• Momma's Restaurante opens in the Saint Mark's district of Portland, Liberty City.
• Howlin' Petes Biker Emporium opens for business in Vice City, Florida.

1969

• July 16: NASA's Apollo Lunar Module lands on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 crewed lunar mission.

1970

• The radio station K-DST starts broadcasting in San Andreas.
• Sage, the DJ of Radio X, is born at some point between this year and 1974. ^[ref?]

1971

• Tommy Vercetti is sent to kill one man in Harwood, Liberty City by Sonny Forelli. The job was actually a set up, where Sonny sent eleven men to kill Tommy. Tommy killed all eleven men and served fifteen years in prison. Following this incident, Tommy earned the nickname The Harwood Butcher.

1972

• June 19: Leo Kasper is born.
• Andee is born.
• BJ Smith begins playing football.

1973

• The Carson General Hospital is established in Rockford, Liberty City.

1974

• Pay 'n' Spray is established in the United States.
• ZIP is established in San Fierro.

1977

• Brian Johnson is born.
• Burn Baby Burn is established in Ocean Beach, Vice City.
• Spray'n'go is established in Vice City.
• Hannibal Liquor has been supporting habits in Montgomery, Red County.

1978

• Ricardo Diaz moves to the United States, obtaining a Green Card by bribing the INS.
• Darius Fontaine establishes Inversion Therapy in San Andreas. ^[ref?]
• Ken Rosenberg becomes affiliate with the Forelli Crime Family.
• Toy Corner is established.

1979

• The Hyman Memorial Stadium is opened in Downtown, Vice City.
• Kent Paul walked in on his sister and Martin having sex in Kent, England.
• Presumably, the Remington vehicle is built.
• Presumably, the C.R.A.S.H. unit of the LSPD forms. ^[ref?]

1980

• Ronald Reagan is elected President.
• Alex Shrub becomes a Congressman.
• Maurice Chavez was discovered by Michelle Montanius.

1981

• Kent Paul accidentally sets four houses on fire in Kent, England, during a street party.
• Early Degenatron systems appear in arcades.
• There is an assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley.
• Kent Paul gets arrested for smashing up Mark Cosgrove's car after claiming he stole his first proper girlfriend, May.
• Wave 103 begins broadcasting in Vice City, Florida.
• John F. Hickory moves to Vice City.

1982

• The Cluckin' Bell is established.
• Barry Stark claims to have stopped wearing clothes while on holiday in Halle, Germany.
• Callum Crayshaw's voice breaks.
• Jack Howitzer's picture Evacuator reinvents the cinema.
• Paul leaves East Kent for Florida at the age of 17. People begin to call him "Kent Paul".

1983

• President Reagan proposes a space laser weapons system, called the Strategic Defensive Initiative.
• Reni Wassulmaier and Barry Mickelthwaite have a fling in Monaco.

1984

• Ronald Reagan is reelected.
• Just the Five of Us becomes a big hit.
• Mary-Beth Williams is born in Vice City.
• Ken Rosenberg begins practicing law in Vice City.
• Redwood Cigarettes introduces Redwood Juniors, a brand of candy cigarettes marketed towards children.
• All inbound and outbound flights from Escobar International Airport in Vice City are grounded and the bridges are closed as a precaution due to a hurricane warning. They re-open after Hurricane Gordy bypasses the city.
• The events of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories take place.
  • Victor Vance is expelled from the Army.
  • Hank and Marty Jay Williams are killed by Victor Vance and the Trailer Park Mafia is disbanded.
  • Victor Vance takes over Marty Jay Williams' business.
  • The Cholos are kicked out of Vice City.
  • Agent Bryan Forbes is killed by Victor Vance.
  • The Vance Brothers retrieve steals a big drug shipment belonging to the Mendez Cartel.
  • Gonzalez escapes Vice City.
  • The Mendez Cartel sever their ties with the Vance Brothers.
  • Giorgio Forelli sends a hit squad to kill Phil Collins after loaning his manager Barry Mickelthwaite three million dollars.
  • Phil Collins performs his concert and Reni Wassulmaier leaves Vice City.
  • Louise Cassidy-Williams is murdered by Armando Mendez and Armando Mendez is killed by Victor Vance.
  • Diego Mendez and Jerry Martinez are killed by Victor Vance and the Mendez Cartel is disbanded.

1985

• Daniel Lamb graduates from University of San Fierro with a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry.
• The Home Degenatron games console is released.
• Jenny Louise Crab was interviewed by Maurice Chavez on VCPR's Pressing Issues, after being named Vice City's civilian of the year.
• Home Degenatron system appears.
• Giggle Cream is released with the slogan "Make Desserts Funny".

1986

• Yuppie and the Alien is number 1 in the box office.
• Exploder: Evacuator Part II is the film of the year.
• The "best ever graphics" were discovered, as seen on a magazine cover on the coffee table in Tommy's Hotel room at Ocean View Hotel.
• The new showroom of the Sunshine Autos car dealership opens just outside Little Havana in Vice City, resulting in the demolition of its previous premises and the clearance of a trailer park located on the site of the new showroom.
• The events of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City take place.
  • The 'Harwood Butcher', Tommy Vercetti, is released from prison in Liberty City and the Forelli Crime Family decide to expand their business interests into Vice City due to the lucrative drugs trade in the city.
  • Lawyer Ken Rosenberg sets up a drug deal between the Vance Crime Family and Forelli Family representatives Tommy Vercetti, Harry and Lee. The deal is ambushed by Ricardo Diaz' men, resulting in the deaths of Victor Vance, Harry and Lee.
  • Leo Teal is killed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • Giorgio Forelli is acquitted of fraud after Tommy Vercetti intimidates two jurors on his case.
  • A building under construction is destroyed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • Pierre La Ponce is killed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • The Sharks suffer a massive attack from Diaz' men.
  • A Tank is stolen from the Army.
  • Ricardo Diaz is killed by Tommy Vercetti and Lance Vance.
  • Juan Cortez escapes from Vice City.
  • The Haitian Drug Factory in Little Haiti is destroyed in an explosion caused by Tommy Vercetti and the Cuban Gang.
  • The rock band Love Fist arrives in Vice City and hold a concert.
  • Carl Pearson is killed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • Mrs. Dawson is killed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • Mike Griffin, Dick Tanner, Franco Carter, Marcus Hammond, Nick Kong and Charlie Dilson are all killed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • Tommy Vercetti begins to purchase various businesses throughout the city, including a taxi company, a night club and a printing shop.
  • The Vice City Cabs owner is killed by Tommy Vercetti.
  • Phil Cassidy blew off his left arm.
  • The El Banco Corrupto Grande is robbed.
  • Tommy Vercetti fails to give Sonny Forelli his money, resulting in Forelli sending his men to collect the money for him.
  • Sonny Forelli flies to Vice City to recoup his money himself and persuades Lance Vance, Vercetti's best friend in the city, to join forces with him. Forelli and Vance assault Vercetti's mansion but they are both killed.

1987

• Brian Johnson dies. His death causes his older brother Carl to move to Liberty City.
• Control of Grove Street Families turf in Los Santos begins to wane, with the Families losing a lot of turf to the Ballas.
• The earliest possible year that Xoomer closed its garage in Doherty, San Fierro.
• The FDA bans the sale of dessert topping Giggle Cream after it is linked to the deaths of at least 23 people.
• Blox, a detergent used to kill germs, is withdrawn from general sale and turned into an American defense strategy.

1988

• An earthquake in San Fierro causes severe damage to the city, especially in the Doherty area.
• A pollution leak occurs in Liberty City, presumably with some harmful effects as a government body report stated: "This spill is nowhere near as serious as the pollution leak of 1988, so I don’t know why people are complaining".
• Madd Dogg performed at the Los Santos Forum. ^[ref?]
• The FDA bans Giggle Cream after someone laughed themselves to death.

1989

• Jack Howitzer's film career begins to slowly decline from this point on.
• Katie Zhan begins working as a nurse.
• The Truth meets and becomes friends with Dwaine and Jethro at the '89 San Fierro Love-In, based on the 1967 Summer of Love in San Francisco.
• Big Smoke moves to Idlewood. ^[ref?]
• Kent Paul leaves Vice City. ^[ref?]
• Maccer founds the Gurning Chimps.
• Jimmy Hernandez becomes an LSPD officer.
• The San Fierro Packers becomes the favourite baseball team of San Andreas.

1990

• Rapper Madd Dogg releases Hustlin' Like Gangstaz and Still Madd, his first and second albums respectively.
• Madd Dogg begins a relationship with Rochell'le.
• Dwaine becomes a hot dog salesman. ^[ref?]

1991

• Asuka Kasen moves to Liberty City from Japan.
• Rapper Madd Dogg releases 24 Carat Dogg, his third album.
• R&B and Rap singer Rochell'le releases Leg$, her first album.
• One Eyed Monster War was released for the handheld console EXsorbeo.
• This would've been the year Giorgio Forelli was released from incarceration, had the case's jurors not been scared out of imprisoning him.

1992

• An earthquake in the state of San Andreas damages bridges connecting between Flint, Red, and Bone County, leading to its closures for an extended period.
• Willard manufactured the Elegant.
• The events of "The Introduction" prologue movie of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas take place.
  • Officer Ralph Pendelbury from Internal Affairs has uncovered evidence of corruption against police officers Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski, both high-ranking officers in C.R.A.S.H.
  • Big Smoke convinces Ryder to betray the Grove Street Families.
  • Officer Jimmy Hernandez joins C.R.A.S.H.
  • Ken Rosenberg is released from Fort Carson, San Andreas, after being sent by Tommy Vercetti to be rehabilitated.
  • Kent Paul becomes the new manager of the Gurning Chimps.
  • Officer Ralph Pendelbury is killed by Jimmy Hernandez on Frank Tenpenny's orders under the threat of death.
  • Beverly Johnson is murdered in the Johnson House in a drive-by shooting by the Ballas.
• OG Loc is sent to prison and enters a relationship with Freddy.
• Madd Dogg undergoes rehabilitation for emotional and drug-use issues.
• The events of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas take place.
  • Carl Johnson returns to San Andreas from Liberty City after hearing of his mother's death.

  • A Jetpack is robbed from the Area 69.
  • The Four Dragons Casino opens for business.
  • Johnny Sindacco suffers a heart attack and dies.
  • Officer Pulaski is killed in a car chase by CJ.
  • Second Forelli Don, Marco Forelli, is killed by Carl Johnson on Salvatore Leone's orders.
  • Caligula's Casino is robbed by the Mountain Cloud Boys and Carl Johnson.
  • Big Poppa is killed by Carl Johnson.
  • Sweet is finally released from prison as part of an agreement between Mike Toreno and CJ in exchange for CJ having done work for Toreno after several weeks.
  • A large-scale riot erupts across the city of Los Santos, following announcement by Red County District Attorney's Office dropping charges against C.R.A.S.H. member Frank Tenpenny for lack of evidence necessary to convict him.
  • Big Smoke is killed in a shootout at his Crack Palace and Frank Tenpenny is killed in an automobile accident when his firetruck fell off a bridge in Ganton into Grove Street.
  • Madd Dogg's new album achieved a golden record.
  • Frank Tenpenny's corpse is reported on WCTR News to have been mutilated and stripped by the homeless, before officials found it once the riots had ended.
  • Soon after the riots, reporter Richard Burns is fired from WCTR News.
• Roger C. Hole is elected to his first term as the Mayor of Liberty City.

1993

• Mayor Roger C. Hole is involved in the 'Million dollar lunch' scandal, in which Hole, three Russian prostitutes and a senior manager from a construction company are trying to secure government contracts.
• Rapper Madd Dogg releases Forty Dogg, his fourth album.

1994

• Cluckin' Bell is taken to court in Ohio, and wins the case with no link found between their meals and mammary gland swelling.
• Johnny is born.
• Madd Dogg released his album N.L.A.D.B. (Never Leave a Dog Behind).
• Rochell'le released her album Dangerous Curves.

1995

• Mayor Roger C. Hole is involved in another scandal. This time, Mayor Hole is photographed having lunch with members of the Forelli Crime Family.

1996

• Kenji Kasen arrives in the United States.
• Roger C. Hole, mayor of Liberty City since 1992, is re-elected to a second term.

1997

• The Triads starts operating in Liberty City after the Hong Kong handover in July 1997.
• Mayor Roger C. Hole is involved in yet another scandal. This time, Hole is accused of securing drugs for city officials in exchange for sanitation contracts.
• Momma's Restaurante is voted one of Liberty City's top 100 Sicilian-American Restaurants.
• Barry Harcross was falsely charged by the FBI for money laundering for the mob in his construction company.
• Johnny was taught to clean the bathroom by his father, Bob.
• RAILS cereal was introduced.
• El Burro is being under observation by the LCPD.

1998

• The events of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories take place.
  • Toni Cipriani returns to Liberty City.
  • The Dolls House is destroyed by Toni Cipriani.
  • Giovanni Casa is killed by Toni Cipriani.
  • Dan Sucho is killed by Toni Cipriani.
  • Cedric Fotheringay is killed by Toni Cipriani.
  • Joseph Daniel O'Toole is killed by Mickey Hamfists.
  • Vincenzo Cilli is killed by Toni Cipriani.
  • Mayor R.C. Hole is killed by Toni Cipriani.
  • Miles O'Donovan is elected in a special election after defeating Donald Love.

• James Earl Cash is caught and locked away at the Darkwoods Penitentiary in Carcer City.
• The new Kenji's Casino is announced on billboards around Liberty City.
• The events of Grand Theft Auto Advance take place.
  • A drug dealer named Federico is killed by Mike.
  • Vinnie fakes his death in a car explosion in Callahan Point.
  • The Diamond Sky bar in Red Light District is destroyed by Mike during its grand opening.
  • An illegal cargo guarded by weapon smugglers in Portland Harbor is stolen by Mike.
  • A senator who had enough support to pass an anti-smoking bill that would ban smoking in bars is attacked by Mike, and drops the anti-smoking bill.
  • Jonnie is killed in his bar.
  • Mike begins to work for King Courtney after chasing him.
  • The Staunton Grand Prix event happened in Staunton Island, Liberty City.
  • Mike wins a fight against Cisco, leader of the Colombian Cartel, before discovering that King Courtney was just using him in his war against the Colombian Cartel.
  • Mike begins to work for Cisco and the Colombian Cartel.
  • Cisco has begun to make shoes with empty heels, in order to smuggle drugs past metal detectors at Francis International Airport in Shoreside Vale.
  • Pat, Rafael and Tomas are killed by Mike.
  • An Aerial Surveillance Equipment Factory in Staunton Island is destroyed by Mike.
  • Yuka Kasen is kidnapped by Mike.
  • Mike begins to work for Asuka Kasen, one of the Yakuza leaders.
  • Yuka Kasen is rescued by Mike.
  • The Vice City Mambas Quarterback is attacked by Mike in the Liberty Memorial Coliseum.
  • Hollywood film actor Biff Rock is attacked by Mike while filming a movie outside the Liberty City Cathedral.
  • Mike kills a pimp in Staunton Island.
  • Cisco is killed in his private jet by Vinnie.
  • Vinnie is killed by Mike.
  • 8-Ball accidentally burns his hands and is arrested.
  • Misty begins to work for Luigi Goterelli at Luigi's Sex Club 7 in Red Light District.
  • Mike leaves Liberty City after defeating King Courtney.

2001

• The flashback events of Manhunt 2 take place six years prior to the main events of the game.
• George W Bush is making Liberty City his first stop on a big city tour in after being elected president in January 20th.
• Barry Harcross returns to the United States after all his charges from his 1997 incident have been dropped.
• A Rocket launcher incident in Trenton has been followed by a outbreak of disturbances in the city. The reasons for the rocket launcher attack are unknown.
• Representatives of Love Inc have been buying property across Liberty City, while Donald Love opened casinos and cleared slums across America.
• Citizen's groups in Liberty City started petitioning the Mayor's Office in an attempt to revamp the city's aging Red Light District.
• Salvatore Leone, who had been on trial for tax evasion, walked free from a federal court in March 31st, as the case against him collapsed.
• A new fleet of police helicopters has been purchased to help patrol the city streets.
• Equanox is unvailed by Zaibatsu Corporation at the city's annual Beneficial Chemicals Trade Show in March 31th.
• A government body said the recent oil spill in Liberty City harbor "would cause no lasting damage to Liberty City inhabitants, as long as they don't swim, or drink tap water."
• Cheung Industries of Shanghai announced that they were to expand the factory production of mackerel in Liberty City.
• Chatterbox FM first aired in August.
• Internal Affairs at the LCPD investigates links between the Yakuza and police.
• Porter Tunnel is delayed due to financial problems.
• The Old Oriental Gentleman is arrested in October after arriving in Liberty City on a private jet plane from an "unknown departure point somewhere in East Asia", for "failing to satisfy the INS that he had a valid reason for entering the country" and having no proper travel documents. As a result, he was set to be delivered to a high security penitentiary before he is to be deported back later in the same month.
• Liberty Tree wins the "Most Absorbent Newsprint Award" at the Cleaning and Tidying Association of America annual awards ceremony in October 18th.
• The events of Grand Theft Auto III take place in late October.
  • Claude is arrested for robbing Liberty City Bank.
  • Claude escapes with 8-Ball on the ride to prison and the Callahan Bridge is damaged by a bomb.
  • Mike Forelli is killed by Claude.
  • Lee Chong is killed by Claude.
  • The Bank of Liberty is robbed.
