The Crossbow is a multi-use ranged weapon that shoots bolts. It contains 30 shots.
By firing through a flame generated by blocks like Flamethrowers or Torches, flaming arrows can be created (which have a chance of setting things on fire themselves).

Usage[]
The crossbow fires arrows identical to those fired by NPC archers, and will do the same damage to structures, machines, and so on. With good aim, it is capable of doing more damage than the Cannon. However, it is hard to see this potential in practice, and generally serves better as an anti-personnel weapon due to NPCs' lower health. Even in this role, their effectiveness starts to wane as heavier-armored enemies begin to appear.
Using NoBounds, truly prodigious rates of fire can be achieved. However, the potential damage and range are limited by the fact that only 30 arrows can exist (per crossbow) at a time - over that cap, the oldest arrows will vanish.
A maximum theoretical rate of fire can be achieved by setting it to -1. The value will overflow, and an arrow will be fired every single frame.
Arrow colliders are notorious for being flaky and unpredictable, especially at high speed (moreso than cannons); they are exceedingly likely to hit the firing machine. A common remedy for this problem is Scaling the crossbow very long and very thin, and ensuring the front of the crossbow is well in front of the rest of the machine.
Technologies[]
Being a very situational and flaky block, the crossbow isn't a lynchpin of any particular technology.
Trivia[]
- When firing, the mechanism on the block model does not move.
