Usage[]
In vanilla, the Cannon is a middling weapon best used for sniping and precision work. It has good range and power, but can only be fired once.
At x1 power it can be placed and fired with little hassle. However, when set to x2 power - and particularly when set to x4 power by copying from a Shrapnel Cannon - sturdy machine design and basic Recoil Suppression become necessary (see Technology).
When exposed to fire (Flamethrower, Torches, Flaming Ball, burning blocks, etc.), it fires on its own.
Where it really comes into its own is with the addition of the Infinite Ammo cheat - a multi-shot weapon that can actually break things is quite devastating, as any new player tackling Midlands Encampment learns. Its effectiveness only increases with the addition of the Explosive Cannonballs cheat (Remote Grenade explosions on contact) and NoBounds (which allows truly obscene powers to be used).
Cannonballs appear to have a higher physics tick rate than other objects, allowing them to collide with thin objects at speeds where other objects would normally phase through.
Autocannons[]
With the use of the Infinite Ammo cheat, cannons can be fired repeatedly. By setting them on fire or using a Timer, they can be fired repeatedly and quickly simply by holding a key down, like a machine gun.
Timer autocannons have a higher rate of fire than fire-based autocannons.
Cannons have a random firing delay between 0.0 and 0.2 seconds, which is particularly noticeable with autocannons. Any suppression system with moving parts needs to be beefed up significantly to not break when the cannon fires at its most extended position. It also makes any method of firing through a spinning propeller impossible.
Particularly on aircraft with high power cannons, it is recommended to use a single very heavy Ballast as the machine's spine and embed the autocannons within it. This eliminates any slop from normal recoil suppression mechanisms, increasing accuracy and durability.
Technology[]
The Cannon (and, to a lesser degree, the Shrapnel Cannon) are the entire reason why Recoil Suppression technologies exist. Its simplest form is the heavy-Ballast-and-Suspension combo, but also encompasses Overflow, FNS, and Proportional Response systems.
Turrets are often built to house and aim high-powered cannons.
It is also possible to build complex autoloader systems, allowing multiple shots without the use of cheats.
