🎃👻💀Spooktober Week 2024💀👻🎃
More than 35 years after Tim Burton's classic Beetlejuice, the old gangs back together (well, at least Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara and Michael Keaton) with Burton directing and the addition of Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe. Lydia (Ryder) now has a boyfriend, Rory (Theroux), who is the producer of her successful TV talk show, Ghost House, where she conjures up the dead. Lydia is estranged from her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), but with the sudden death of her father, Lydia's stepmother, Delia (O'Hara), insists they all must return to their family home in Winter River, Connecticut, for the funeral. Unbeknownst to Lydia, Betelgeuse /Beetlejuice (Keaton) is set to make his own return! The nostalgia factor was off the charts with this one, so much so I refused to see it in the cinema with my sister in case it bombed! Winona is awesome returning to her goth roots, Jenna is perfectly cast as her daughter, and Catherine O'Haras's character arc has developed nicely. I wouldn't say I liked Justin's character (but I guess that was the point), and Michael Keaton pushes Betelgeuse /Beetlejuice's nastiness's even further and grosser than before. Oh, and I fricken ❤️Bob! I weirdly loved the reintroduction of the comic special effects, and the soundtrack is smokin! The pacing is great up until the big musical number. Unfortunately, unlike Harry Belafonte's Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora) MacArthur Park didn't work for me. I was disappointed with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (some of the gags kinda fell flat), but it was almost what I expected, and with another watch, my rating just might improve. 💀👻🎃
