Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feels a bit overstuffed but a ton of fun! I love that they kept it feeling handmade, with CG used to assist rather than lead the effects. It's lovingly made, with tongue firmly in cheek, but manages to keep the Beetlejuice spirit alive while doing it's own thing.
I never got around to watching Wednesday - Netflix shows are generally not my thing - but it's interesting that Burton seems rejuvenated after that experience, and brings not only Jenna Ortega but also the writers of that project over. And his first film in 5 years really is his best film in years!
I meant to catch up with the original, which I've seen a few times but not recently, but in the end seeing the sequel on its own might have been a better experience, with the shadow of the original not looming large in my mind.
While all the legacy actors get their due, Ortega admirably takes over the repressed teen lead role, and while she doesn't really look anything like Winona Ryder, she brings exactly the right energy to feel like her daugher. As much as I enjoyed them, Willem Dafoe and Burton's new squeeze Monica Bellucci felt like doodles of Burton that could have been cut out in a script polish. But I couldn't complain of having those two actors around, so I'll take the overstuffed goodness of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice just the way it is.
