Dune: Part Two, Inside Out 2, and now Beetlejuice Beetlejuice… this has been a great year for sequels (and sandworms) thus far.
I'm probably in the vast minority with this opinion but I found this to be far more enjoyable and a significant improvement over the original. My biggest criticism with the first film was how little screentime Michael Keaton's titular character had, and the main plotline wasn't entertaining at all. In the sequel, Beetlejuice has similarly limited screentime, however, the family drama at the center of the film is definitely more compelling. The exploration of trauma, grief, and loss is an interesting and fitting direction to take this legacy sequel and the performances really sell this message. The new additions to the cast, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci, fit perfectly in the whimsical world that Tim Burton introduced us to nearly four decades ago. Burton's signature and campy production design is on full display here, just in time for the Halloween season.
In terms of Oscar prospects, this will definitely be the frontrunner for Best Hair and Makeup and deservedly so. The costume design and production design are detailed and eccentric, and it would be cool to see the film get some awards recognition for those two categories as well.
Overall, this is a nice return to form for Tim Burton in what is his best film in the last decade.
(I wonder how much Tesla paid for the billion car shots in this film...)
