TH3onlyBATMAN’s review published on Letterboxd:
After more than three decades since the original Beetlejuice enchanted audiences, the sequel, Beetlejuice 2, attempts to recapture the magic of its predecessor while introducing new elements to the beloved franchise. Directed by Tim Burton, this film brings back Michael Keaton as the chaotic and mischievous ghost, alongside Winona Ryder reprising her role as Lydia Deetz. Despite the nostalgic charm and some standout performances, the sequel struggles to live up to the original’s brilliance.
The plot follows Lydia, now a successful artist, as she navigates the complexities of adulthood while grappling with her past and her connections to the afterlife. When she inadvertently summons Betelgeuse once again, chaos ensues as he tries to reclaim his former glory. The premise offers potential for humor and depth, yet the execution often feels scattered and unfocused. The film juggles multiple storylines that fail to coalesce into a cohesive narrative.
Michael Keaton’s return as Betelgeuse is undoubtedly a highlight, and his performance is as wild and unpredictable as ever. His comedic timing and charisma shine, bringing back the character’s signature blend of humor and menace. However, the sequel fails to give him the same depth and complexity that made his original portrayal so memorable.
Winona Ryder’s Lydia, now a more mature character, adds an emotional anchor to the film, but her development feels rushed. The exploration of her character’s journey could have benefited from more nuance and attention. The new supporting characters, while amusing, often feel underdeveloped, making it hard for the audience to connect with their storylines.
Visually, Beetlejuice 2 retains Burton’s distinctive aesthetic, with vibrant colors and imaginative set designs that create a whimsical atmosphere. However, some visual effects feel outdated and lack the polish of modern filmmaking.
Ultimately, Beetlejuice 2 provides nostalgic moments for fans of the original but struggles to carve out its own identity. While it has its entertaining moments, the film feels more like a hollow homage rather than a worthy continuation of the story. Despite its charm, it falls short of the high expectations set by its predecessor, earning a solid but unspectacular three-star rating.
