Tim Burton’s highly stylized world that shouldn’t work, but somehow does.
It is astonishing how the horror elements mix with comedy perfectly, how the frequently changing animation styles fit together, and how the contrasting settings of life and the afterlife feel natural. Burton is the definition of auteur and no one else could have made these movies successful. While the plot is overstuffed, the production design and aesthetic of this environment are unmatched. The use of color and lighting, the unique make-up and costumes, the practical props and effects, all combine to create an atmosphere of fun. The jokes constantly make me chuckle and this film is full of good callbacks to the original.
Michael Keaton easily snaps back into his iconic role and takes over the screen with his limited screen time. Winona Ryder continues her goth sweetness and is a believable mother to up-and-coming star, Jenna Ortega. Ortega fits nicely into the world of Burton and works to modernize the audience.
The movie fails to choose a singular storyline and includes many unnecessary aspects (namely Tim Burton’s girlfriend, Monica Bellucci). The vibes of the small Connecticut town and of Halloween are charming though. I was pleasantly surprised with some of the twists and the bureaucracy of the underworld continues to be hysterical. The song breaks are very entertaining and the mayhem of the wedding is Burton going all-in. While what leads to that is convoluted, the payoff is worth it.
