Prelude To Explosion Madness (爆裂狂の誕生, Bakuretsukyō no Pureryūdo) is the sixth chapter of the KonoSuba Bakuen manga series, and covers the Prologue as well as Chapter 5 in Volume 1 of the light novels.
Summary[]
Back when Megumin as a child met the voluptuous wizard at the tomb, the wizard cast a spell on a great black beast she referred to as her other half whom she had just pacified with Explosion, making it shrink into the form of a little black cat with wings. She subsequently asked the name of Megumin who was impressed by her big boobs and wanted to be like her, before the little girl turned to pick up the puzzle pieces she had been playing with that was used to seal the Evil Spirit. Realising the brilliance of the child who was able to solve the complex puzzle, the voluptuous wizard offered as gratitude to fulfill one of Megumin's wish, though the ones about becoming voluptuous or the Demon King were out of question. After being warned not to play with the puzzles or the black beast will be freed again, Megumin asked to be taught the Explosion Magic which the voluptuous wizard had used.
In the present day, as the villagers are busy fighting the demonic servants of the Evil Spirit appearing all over the village, Megumin and Yunyun observes from a distance Komekko confronting at the Tomb of the Evil Spirit several of the Demons, one of whom is holding Shadow. Without any other way to save her, Megumin ponders expending her skill points to learn Advanced Magic, despite it possibly taking decades afterwards before she can gather enough for learning Explosion Magic.
Seeing Megumin's dilemma, Yunyun takes out her Adventurer Card and learns new magic, following which she saves Komekko by attacking the Demons with Lightning. As the two sisters run while she tries to save Shadow as well, Megumin notes how Yunyun will need to graduate immediately now that she had learnt Intermediate Magic, and no longer having easy access to skill-up potions, from now on she will have to learn Advanced Magic by fighting monsters and levelling up.
After confirming if Komekko will still love her even if she cannot use the strongest magic, the guilty Megumin runs back towards Yunyun, who has managed to retrieve Shadow and is easily defeating the Demons. Making an extra effort to wipe out all the Demons around her so Megumon won't need to learn Advanced Magic, Yunyun collapses in exhaustion, yet Komekko sees more of the Demons heading their way. Megumin then realises that the adults are herding the Demons in their direction to take them out all at once, though as she makes up her mind to learn new magic to protect Yunyun and Komekko, she notices that she now has enough skill points for learning Explosion Magic because of her killing a Duxion earlier on.
As soon as she learns the magic she craved, Megumin chants the incantation like her saviour once did, creating a large explosion in the air that killed off all the gathering Demons. Filled with bliss at the devastation she had wrought, Megumin powerlessly collapses, with the adults who saw the Explosion later rushing to their aid,
The following day, Megumin and Yunyun confess everything to Pucchin, who helps them keep from other villagers the knowledge of Komekko releasing the seal or Megumin and Yunyun learning magic, before holding a graduation ceremony just for the two of them several days after. Later at the lakeside, the two of them discuss about Shadow, who Yunyun suggests making into an actual familiar so she won't be eaten by Komekko, prompting Megumin to rename the cat "Chomusuke".
It so happened that soon after the battle with the servants of the Evil Spirit, did Host return with a caged hen and its chicks, only to find the traces of a fierce battle, which Komekko citing the adults said was the result of the released Evil Spirit battling the awakened unknown goddess. Reasoning that the other half of Wolbach is still somewhere out there, Host prepared to go and search for it, then told the unhappy Komekko, who he thinks will someday turn into a powerful wizard, how he can become her familiar if his contract with Wolbach ends. They accordingly both made a Crimson Magic Clan style introduction of themselves, before Host set off.
