Spider! This article contains spider imagery that could be disturbing. |
The Wolf Spider is a hostile creature found around the Backyard, most notably under the Oak Tree or around the Plank Cliff in the early areas. However, they can also be found in the late areas located in the upper yard. It is considerably larger than the player and can be identified by the hair across its body, the colored V on its abdomen and the thicker legs than orb weavers. The Wolf Spider is one of the biggest threats to unprepared players. They have an infected variant found in 3 areas across the yard after sealing the weed killer.
Behavior[]
Wolf Spiders roam randomly on the ground usually at late afternoon; night; and early morning, as they commonly sleep during the day. They sleep by lowering their bodies to the ground and curling their legs close, making a very distinct and audible “snoring” sound effect. If a perceived threat or prey are spotted, they break from their roaming state and chase that creature. Their longer legs give them a deceptively fast stride, both when roaming and chasing. They attack similarly to Orb Weaver Spiders, but are able to inflict an additional Poison effect. Their attacks include a normal bite, a forward lunge attack, a jump attack, and a deadly combo bite, all of which apply poison. They also have a chance to inflict Venom.
Wolf Spiders will always sleep through the first 3 days of a players save before beginning to patrol at night, though if disturbed while sleeping, they will still attack as usual.
Wolf Spiders will eat Stinkbug Parts, even those stored in players' chests.
Interaction With Player[]
The Wolf Spider is hostile toward the player, and will produce snarling sounds and give chase upon spotting them. Even before players are seen, if one is nearby, the Wolf Spider will "smell" and follow in the direction of that player. As mentioned above, Wolf Spiders have a fondness for Stinkbug Parts, and may steal them from players' baskets or chests.
The player can unlock the Mithridatism mutation by killing a Wolf Spider, and can gain stronger phases of the mutation by killing more.
Interaction With Other Creatures[]
Wolf Spiders are passive toward Orb Weaver Spiders and Spiderlings and will not attack them under any circumstances. They are neutral towards other creatures but will defend themselves and become hostile when attacked.
If a Red Worker Ant gets too close to a Wolf Spider while it is sleeping, the Wolf Spider will become aggressive.
Advanced Loot Table[]
This is a more advanced covering of the loot-table of Wolf Spider. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 1 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (EX: Instead of getting say 2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if a item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.
Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.
Note: For consistency sake, all duplicate categories have a multiplier next to them, but function as unique loot types when say using Stealing.

Strategy[]
Wolf Spiders are a formidable threat and one of the toughest early obstacles on the Grasslands. If one catches the player unawares on flat ground, they should generally be faced and fought rather than attempted to be outran. They should be fought with tier 2 armor and a tier 2 weapon, preferably a Black Ant Sword or Insect Axe. All their attacks should be blocked to avoid their deadly Poison de-buff, which is the main threat of the fight, so using a one-handed weapon and a shield to learn its attacks for perfect blocking can be an invaluable skill. Their combo attack is especially lethal due to its fast attacks and powerful damage. Mithridatism is the most useful mutation to use against them as it makes the Poison damage much more bearable. The Spicy Coaltana or Spicy Staff can trivialize fights against them as they are weak to Slashing and Spicy damage.
Trivia[]
- Many caves and dens that Wolf Spiders exclusively nest in contain spider webs, but most Wolf Spiders in the real world don't spin webs.
- Wolf Spiders will not attack Orb Weavers in-game. In reality, these two spiders would naturally compete over food or territory and would never be seen together without some hostility.
- The Wolf Spiders in Grounded closely resembles Rabidosa punctulata, or the dotted wolf spider. They are often seen roaming in tall, grassy areas for prey, similar to the Wolf Spiders in-game.
