A teen equipped with Acorn Armor

Armor is used to defend against the various hazards present in the backyard. Different types of armor pieces can be crafted from resources such as acorns, including some that provide various status effects like improved stamina, hauling strength, or damage reduction. All 3-piece armor sets have a bonus that activates when the player wears the full set. Like weapons, all armor can be upgraded at the Smithing Station to inherit stronger defense and durability, as well as the possibility of a unique effect if the player chooses the Sleek path.

Armor Protection Mechanics

The amount of damage received by the player is calculated through three variables, in order:

• Defense (Shown as a segmented bar. aka Damage Threshold, DT)
• Resistance (Shown as a percentage number. aka Damage Reduction, DR)
• Minimum Guaranteed Damage (MGD. Not visible in-game)

Defense

Defense is a flat damage reduction. For each point of defense, damage taken is also reduced by one point. Only the armor piece's tier determines the amount of base defense applied.

Defense is the first modifier that is applied to incoming damage.

Example: If an attack of 100 damage hits an armor with a defense rating of 30 the damage will be reduced to 70. Afterwards the remaining damage will get reduced further by the resistance of the armor.

Defense can be increased through upgrades.

Resistance

Resistance is a percentage damage reduction. In general the armor piece's weight class (light, medium, heavy) determines the amount of resistance applied.

Resistance is the second modifier that is applied to incoming damage after the reduction by defense.

Example: If an attack of 130 damage hits a heavy armor (30% resistance) with a defense rating of 30 the damage will be reduced to 100. The damage will then further reduced by 30% by the resistance of the heavy armor down to 70 damage for a total of 60 damage of damage reduction.

Minimum Guaranteed Damage

Minimum Guaranteed Damage (MGD) is a hidden mechanic to prevent players from becoming inevitably invincible to some attacks.

The MGD is 25% of the initial damage of an attack and will ignore all kinds of damage reduction.

Example: With a defense of 20, a 20 damage point attack would normally be completely neutralized. But because of the MGD, the attack will do at least 5 points of damage.

Because of its percentage-based nature, there will always be some damage that you will take.

Upgrading is the only way to lower the MGD. The exact formula is currently unknown, but it is theorised that for each level on each piece of armor the MGD is reduced by 0.5%, bringing the MGD down to roughtly 11%.
