The Wasp Queen is an optional boss Creature found in the Wasp Nest in the Brawny Boy Bin. The boss is summoned with the Bee Bee Q Medley summoning item. The item is unlocked via the MEMO: O.R.C Wasp Queen Research notes, which can be found in a skeleton located directly right of the eggs used to spawn the boss. When the fight starts, the entrance to the arena is filled with paper, blocking the exit.

Boss Fight[]

The Wasp Queen fight is unique in that it has two concurrent phases throughout the fight: one of three damage phases, and one of four unique timed phases. Damage phases affect her damage resist, quantity of attacks, and summons while the timed phases affect her behavior throughout the fight.

Timed Phases[]

Timed Phases Order[]

The timed phases progress in a specific order, as follows:

Phase 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 2 → 1 → 2 → 3

Once the last phase is complete, the Wasp Queen returns to the beginning of the cycle, and this repeats. Do note even after the time expires for each phase, she can only switch phases once she has finished any moves in the previous phase she started in said phase's time.

Timed Phase 1[]

Phase 1 lasts for 30 seconds the first time, and 25 on subsequent occurrences. It is an attack phase in which the Wasp Queen uses a combination of her basic sting, a ranged stinger shot, a melee stinger combo, a charged melee sting, or an 11-shot poison barrage. She prefers to use the poison barrage and stinger shot over other attacks in this phase. The amount of times she can use her basic sting and poison barrage throughout the phase is determined by her current damage phase.

Timed Phase 2[]

Phase 2 lasts for 10 seconds. The Wasp Queen screeches, summoning a number of Wasps or Wasp Drones that depends on the current damage phase. She does not attack during this phase. Her minions are unique in that they will always die in 3 hits, regardless of the damage inflicted including passive DOTs like Poison, Gas, or Bleed.

Timed Phase 3[]

Phase 3 lasts for 15 seconds. The Wasp Queen lands on the ground and rests for the entire phase, inflicting moderate damage if the player is in her landing area. This phase acts as a large opening for the player, allowing them to easily inflict damage with melee weapons.

Timed Phase 4[]

Phase 4 lasts for 20 seconds and only appears once in the cycle. The Wasp Queen hovers in one place and scatters several poison bombs throughout the arena. Each bomb explodes shortly after impact, dealing damage over time. She can either shoot two in a row or a third very quickly after the first two shots. She does not use any other attacks.

Damage Phases[]

Damage Phase 1[]

Above 75% health, the Wasp Queen has a 25% resistance to all damage sources. During Timed Phase 1, she can only use the basic sting twice, and the poison barrage thrice. During Timed Phase 2, she summons one Wasp on Mild and Medium difficulty, or three on Woah! difficulty; plus one additional Wasp for each additional player.

Damage Phase 2[]

Between 35% and 75% health, her damage resist increases to 62.5%. During Timed Phase 1, she can use the basic sting thrice, and the poison barrage four times. During Timed Phase 2, on Mild and Medium difficulty, she summons one additional Wasp compared to Damage Phase 1. On Woah! difficulty, she summons either 3 Wasps or 2 Wasps and a Wasp Drone, plus one additional Wasp for each additional player.

Damage Phase 3[]

Below 35% health, her damage resist increases to 87.5%. During Timed Phase 1, she can use the basic sting four times, and the poison barrage five times. Timed Phase 2 does not change on Mild or Medium difficulty, but on Woah!, she summons either two Wasps and one Wasp Drone, or two Wasp Drones and one Wasp; plus one additional Wasp for each additional player.

New Game+ Changes[]

In New Game+2, she can spawn unique variants of her normal minions. Normally, the minions she spawns have a hard rule where after 3 hits of any damage, they will die, including DOT effects. However, in New Game+2, she can spawn variants of her minions that instead have 300 health each. In phase 2, she will spawn a non 3-hit Wasp Drone and a Wasp in phase 3. Her normal minions will still spawn and cannot be infused while her NG+ variants of her minions can be infused.

In New Game+3, she will spawn an additional non 3-hit Wasp in phase 1.

Advanced Loot Table[]

This is a more advanced covering of the loot-table of Wasp Queen. Each item has an independent chance and count, in which the chance is the chance it can drop and the count is the amount of items that have that chance. If a count larger than 2 is in one section, then each item has an independent chance from one another (EX: Instead of getting say 1-2 of a resource, you can get 1 with a 70% chance and another with an additional 70% chance). In terms of Stealing, it can take one item from every section of the loot table, so even if an item count is say 5, the player will only steal one from that section.

Creature Loot Tables also tend to have large amounts of 1% items, which is intended to make stealing more rare items harder, as the player is more likely to steal the large amounts of 1% items than a singular 50% item.

Strategy[]

  • The Salt Morning Star, Club of the Mother Demon with Apex Predator, Mint Mace, or other powerful clubs are powerful due to the boss not resisting generic.
  • Waspidote is a very useful smoothie for curing the poison the boss occasionally will inflict.
  • Mithradatism is highly recommended due to multiple of her attacks inflicting poison.
  • Her minions always die in 3 hits, so inflicting them with a fast DOT like Poison or Bleed will ensure they eventually die.
    • Using the Spicy Staff with any phase Whittle Wizard will quickly inflict a burning effect on the minions and kill them. Other alternatives include Gas Arrows or poison effect items.
  • The player can easily get damage in with a melee weapon during the Poison Bomb Barrage and Tired Landing moves due to her not moving for an extended period of time.
    • Do note that dodging the initial land of the tired move is recommended, as it deals heavy damage and inflicts -Exhaustion Recovery.
  • Using the fallen debris located around the arena as a makeshift barrier can be very useful for avoiding some attacks such as the stinger shot or poison bombs.
  • Using a shield is highly recommended to block her and her minions stinger shots rather than attempting to dodge them.
  • Don't let the minions be the main attention grabber if the Wasp Queen is timed phase 1, as its stinger and poison rain attacks can be devastating if not given full attention.

New Game+ Strategies[]

The following strategies are more advanced and specific, tailored to the changes made in New Game+.

  • A highly upgraded salty weapon such as the Club of the Mother Demon or Termite Axe or a good sour weapon like the Acid Edge or Sour Katanga are highly effective against the Wasp Queen.
  • Be aware of how her minions spawn to predict her summon screeches and quickly attack them.
    • In damage phase 1 they will spawn above the eggs, in damage phase 2 an additional 3-hit Wasp Drone spawns to the left of the eggs and a non 3-hit in the back, and in damage phase 3, all spawn in the back of the room near the entrance.
  • Be sure to perfect block the non 3-hit Wasps charge attack to easily combo them with your strong weapons while stunned.
  • Use Pollen Arrows or the Sour Staff to get non 3-hit Wasp Drones out of the sky and to the ground.

Trivia[]

  • The Wasp Queen was seen in the files even before 1.0, under the codename of "Wicklow".
    • Wicklow is the name of a town in Ireland. Her codename is as such because she was mostly developed by Black Shamrock, in which they are based in Ireland.
    • All of Black Shamrocks other unimplemented bosses also share codenames of towns and counties in Ireland, being "Limerick" for the Lizard and "Antrim" for the Ant Queen.
  • The Wasp Queen and her hive were originally planned to be located inside the shed.
    • Adam Brennecke has stated that the shed would have been "too unstable" for Xbox players, which is why this was dropped.
