The Syria story, it seems, is not so simple as ‘President Assad fell’ and the ‘technocratic Salafists’ rose to power.

At one level, the collapse was predictable. Assad was known to have been influenced by Egypt and UAE for some years past. They had been urging him to break with Iran and Russia, and to shift to the West. For some 3-4 years he had been incrementally signalling and implementing such a move. Iran especially faced increasing obstacles over operational matters in which they were co-operating with Syrian forces. His shift was meant as a message to Iran.

The financial situation of Syria – after years of U.S. Caesar sanctions, plus the loss of all agricultural and energy revenues seized by the U.S. in occupied north-east Syria – was catastrophic. Syria simply had no economy.

No doubt, reaching out to Israel and Washington was presented to Assad as the only practical exit to his dilemma. ‘Normalisation’ could lead to the lifting of sanctions, they implored him. And Assad, according tothose in touch with him, (even at the eleventh hour before the HTS ‘invasion’) was believing that Arab States close to Washington would have opted for his continued leadership, rather than see Syria fall prey to Salafist zealots.

To be clear: Moscow and Tehran had warned Assad that his army (as a whole) was too fragile, too underpaid, and too penetrated and bribed by foreign intelligence services, to be expected to defend the state effectively. Assad also was warned repeatedly about the threat from Idlib jihadists planning to take Aleppo, but the President not only ignored the warnings – he rebutted them.

He was offered a very large external military force not once, but twice, even in ‘the last days’, as Jolani’s militia were advancing. Assad refused. “We are strongâ€, he told an interlocutor on the first occasion; yet shortly afterwards, on a second occasion, he admitted: “My army is running awayâ€.

Assad was not abandoned by his allies. It was by then too late. He had flip-flopped once too often. Two of the principal actors (Russia and Iran) were frustrated and rendered unable to help – absent Assad’s consent.

A Syrian who knew the Assad family, and who spoke with the President at some length just prior the Aleppo invasion, had found him surprisingly sanguine and unflustered – assuring his friend that there were forces enough (2,500) in Aleppo to deal with Jolani’s threats, and hinting that President Sissi might be ready to step in with aid for Syria. (Egypt of course feared Muslim Brotherhood Islamists taking power in a former secular Ba’athist state).

Ibrahim Al-Amine, editor of Al-Akhbar, noted a similar perception by Assad:

“Assad seemed to have become more confident that Abu Dhabi was capable of resolving his problem with the Americans and some Europeans, and he heard a lot about economic temptations if he agreed to the strategy of exiting the alliance with the resistance forces. One of Assad’s workers, who stayed with him until the last hours before he left Damascus, says that the man was still hoping for something big to happen to stop the armed factions’ attack. He believed that “the Arab and international community†would prefer that he remain in power, rather than Islamists take over the administration of Syriaâ€.

Yet, even as the Jolani forces were on the M5 highway linking to Damascus, the wider Assad family and key officials were making no efforts to prepare for a departure, or to warn close friends to think about such contingencies, the interlocutor said. Even as Assad was heading to Hmeimin en route to Moscow, no advice to ‘get out’ was sent to friends.

The latter said that they did not know after Assad’s silent departure to Moscow who exactly, or when, ordered the Syria army to stand down and to prepare for transition.

Assad briefly visited Moscow on 28 November – a day after the HTS attacks in Aleppo province and their swift advance south (and a day after the ceasefire in Lebanon). The Russian authorities have said nothing about the content of the President’s meetings in Moscow, and the Assad family said that the President had returned tight-lipped from Russia, too.

Subsequently, Assad departed finally to Moscow (either on 7 December, after despatching a private plane on multiple flights to Dubai, or on 8 December) – again telling virtually nobody in his immediate and family circle that he was departing for good.

What caused this out-of-character mindset? No one knows; but family members have speculated that Bashar Al-Assad had been seriously disorientated emotionally by the grave illness of his wife, Asma, to whom he is devoted.

Put frankly, whilst the three main players could see clearly the direction events were heading (the fragility of the state was no surprise), nevertheless, Assad’s denial mindset and the consequent speed of the military dénouement was the surprise. That was the true ‘black swan’.

What triggered events? Erdogan has for several years demanded that Assad firstly negotiate with the ‘legitimate Syrian opposition’; secondly that he re-draft the Constitution; and thirdly that he meet face-to-face with President Erdogan (something Assad consistently refused to do). All three powers pressed Assad to negotiate with the ‘opposition’, but he would not, and nor would he meet with Erdogan. (Both loathe each other). Frustration on these counts was high.

Erdogan now indisputably ‘owns’ ‘former-Syria’. Ottoman irredentist sentiment is ecstatic and demanding more Turkish revanchism. Others – the more secular city dwellers of Turkey however – are less enthused by the display of Turkish religious nationalism.

Erdogan however, may well be (or may soon be) experiencing buyer’s remorse: Yes, Turkey stands tall as Syria’s new landlord, but he is now ‘the responsible’ for what happens next. (HTS is plainly exposed as a Turkish proxy). Minorities are being killed; brutal sectarian executions are accelerating; sectarianism becoming more extreme. There is still no Syrian economy in sight; no revenues, and no fuel for the gasoline refinery (previously supplied by Iran).

ORDER IT NOW

Erdogan’s espousal of a re-branded and westernised al-Qaeda always risked proving to be paper-thin (as the sectarian killings are cruelly demonstrating). Will Jolani manage to impose his al-Qaeda-in-a suit makeover across his heterodox followers? Abu Ali al-Anbari, al-Baghdadi’s top aide at the time (2012-2013), gave this scathing appraisal of Jolani:

“He is a cunning person; two-faced; adores himself; does not care about his soldiers; is willing to sacrifice their blood in order to make a name for himself in the media – glows when he hears his name mentioned on satellite channelsâ€.

In any event, one clear outcome is that Erdogan’s ploy has re-ignited formerly (and mostly) quiescent Sunni sectarianism and Ottoman imperialism. The consequences will be many and will ripple across the region. Egypt is already anxious – as is King Abdullah in Jordan.

Many Israelis see themselves as the ‘winners’ from the Syrian up-ending – since the Axis of Resistance supply line has been severed at its middle. Israeli security chief Ronan Bar was most likely briefed by Ibrahim Kalin, Turkish Head of Intelligence, when they met in Istanbul on 19 November on the expected Idlib invasion – in time for Israel to institute the Lebanon ceasefire, and to obstruct the passage of Hizbullah forces into Syria(Israel immediately bombed all the border crossings between Lebanon and Syria).

Nonetheless Israelis may discover that a re-kindled Salafist zealotry is not their friend – nor ultimately to their benefit.

Iran will sign the long-awaited defence accord with Russia on 17 January 2025.

Russia will concentrate on the war in Ukraine and stay aloof from the Middle East quagmire – to focus on the slow global restructuring that has been happening, and on the Big Picture attempt to have Trump in due course come to acknowledge Asian ‘Heartland’ and BRICS security interests, and to agree some frontier to the Rimland (Atlanticist) security sphere, such that cooperation on issues of global strategic stability and European security can be agreed.

  2. The new year will bring in new tensions, within old alliances.

The U.S is now in a quandary with Turkey as it concerns its nuclear arsenal stored in Turkey, (I thought they removed them after the Cuban missile crisis, have the Russians put their missles back in Cuba?)

Oh well serves the Russians right for trusting the word of gangsters.

So the U.S believes that if they remove the missles then its will be a sign the alliance is over, but if they stay in Turkey are they now hostage?

So regime change has solved one problem but created half a dozen others.

Turkey must now see three is a crowd, and they must know who the odd, old, sick man is.

Sykes-Picot created lines that made no sense back in 1916. Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq all have unstable collections of populations pulling opposite directions.

The author is correct. Turkish HTS is 100% about Erdogan’s dreams for a new Ottoman Empire.

The logical next step for Syria is partition. It is not hard to envision a 5 way split Sunni, Kurd, Alawite, Christian, and Druze.

    • Turkish HTS could consolidate the Sunni portions into Greater Türkiye.
    • Kurds would become the start of the long over due Kurdistan
    • Christians and Alawites would likely function as a Russian protectorate.
    • Druze would be an Israeli protectorate.

This would be a win-win end game. And, it could lead to a similar portion of Lebanon allowing Maronite and Druze states to form.

Alas, it is unlikely that Erdogan will accept this path towards peace. Instead, he will likely choose to occupy the Kurdish territory. Can Turkish HTS successfully take the Kurdish area? Almost certainly. That will kick off years of Afghanistan style resistance and insurgency.

Despite the mistake being obvious, does anyone think that Erdogan will avoid it?

So the U.S believes that if they remove the missiles then its will be a sign the alliance is over, but if they stay in Turkey are they now hostage?

Consensus is — There are 20-50 nuclear B61 bombs stored in Turkey. They can only be authorized and armed by U.S. planes, so Turkish forces cannot grab and use them. If they were lost, the fissile material would have to be removed & placed in another device without U.S. safeguards. Chances of this happening are exceedingly slim. Erdogan is provocative, but not that suicidal.

The contrary position is — They were actually removed some time ago. The nuclear bunker at Incirlik Air Base contains dummies that can stand up to visual inspection, but are non functional.

IMHO it would be best to formally remove them. That would reduce Erdogan’s leverage to resist peaceful partition.

    PEACE 😇

    True.

Each bomb is configured individually with the correct pulses to compress the core into a supercritical geometry.

The correct pulse sequence to create the explosive lens has to be loaded into the bomb, and those codes stay in a “safe†place until the device is readied for action.

It is astronomically improbable that a random sequence of the charges is anything but subcritical, like when the French exploded an atomic device in Algeria during its colonial war; just a dirty plutonium mess to clean up, but no BIG boom boom.

But he won’t. Saw an update for the Deagel population estimate for the US. Still 100MM by 2026.

If that 230MM reduction includes most of the “13 & 2%” (and not my family), can live with that.

  9. I have long respected Alastair Crooke for his cool insight into world politics, but this article is dishonest. He presents Russians as poor, powerless players in this situation where Assad was illogically pushing them away from defending him. On the contrary, the explanation for such a rapid collapse is that everyone in the regime obviously knew that their primary guarantor had abandoned them, and further resistance was futile.

Rather than Assad naively trying to turn to the West it’s more likely Putin betrayed him to try and get a Western deal for solving his unending stalemate in Ukraine. Because this time the West is going to keep their side of some secret agreement.

The only thing that was unclear to me was why the Iranians were so passive over all of this, but the above clarifies it:

Iran will sign the long-awaited defence accord with Russia on 17 January 2025.

The Russians obviously dangled this to force the Iranians to abandon the Syrians as well. Given how quickly Syria was dropped the Iranians probably feel less than confident about this arrangement.

It is easier to blame former Syrian President al-Assad if your head is buried in the sand. Recently, al-Assad said, “I never considered stepping down.†Nothing could have happened without the involvement of Russia. Russia’s role was far more important than all the others. For more than a decade in Syria, Russia turned Syria into a defenseless nation on behalf of Israel. It is utterly stupid to blame Bashar al-Assad. It was Putin who forced al-Assad to step down despite Iran, Iraq, and Hezbollah’s readiness to assist Syria against the terrorist onslaught. They were surprised by al-Assad’s immediate and unannounced departure. From the outset, Russia was collaborating with Syria’s enemies. For years, Russia coordinated with Turkey, the U.S., and the Jews. The Jews have been bombing Syria non-stop for 10 years, and Russia has been busy calling on Syria, Iran, and Hezbollah to “exercise restraint.†U.S. and Turkish forces were illegally occupying Syria while Russia claimed to defend Syria. We all know Russia is not a reliable and trustworthy partner. Russia is a master of backstabbing. Russia has a despicable history of backstabbing for the sake of its illusion of being part of the “civilized West,†as if it is uncivilized. Putin’s close relationship with fascistic leaders like Netanyahu, ErdoÄŸan, Orban, Modi, etc. says a lot about his thinking. The Syrian backstabbing was so organized that all Syria’s enemies were ready to move. Al-Assad was kidnapped by Russian forces in Syria and quickly whisked to Russia. It is a cowardly way to pacify all forces around their leader.

All of these clowns, with the possible exception of Macgregor, suffer from the Judeo-phobia. They have so many Jewish contacts, Jewish friends, and even Jewish family members, that they simply cannot see the world as is really is. They buy into all the fake Jewish narratives like the “Holocaust”, “Blood Libel”, and “Anti-Semitism”, and for this reason they have lost all sense of discernment. Of course this applies to virtually all Jews in spades.

All of Napolitano’s clowns see the middle east and the Jew Wesley Clark’s famous “7 countries in 5 years” quip as the result of US “colonialism”.

Must admit this article is one of the more questionable from the author in recent months. To blame Assad for Syrian failure does not exonerate Russians from double playing the entire scenario from beginning till end due to deep strategic relationship they have had with Israel since 1948.

Assad just like Iran and the other BRICS members tried moving closer to oil sheikhdoms because Russia, China and Iran advised him to do so, and because it was a wise thing to do anyway. Likewise those same Arabs nations that had earlier called for Assad’s austere decided to normalize relations with Syria once realized it wasn’t possible to get rid of Assad by force, which they tried hard but failed.

The main question is why didn’t Russian forces in Syria do anything to prevent Israeli airstrikes on Syria during an 11 year period? Why didn’t they give money to Assad so he could raise salaries for his Syrian soldiers just like NATO via Turkiye did supporting Tahrir al- Sham. Jihadist troops receive $500 dollar per month while Syrian soldiers got only $27. If Russia and China had provided similar amount of money to Syrian soldiers they wouldn’t have escaped the war zone following NATO-backed jihadists’ move against Damascus.

Russia obviously is playing a dirty double game here. They hope by doing such a service, the Bilderberg group will reserve a VIP seat for them at the grand chessboard table where Russia becomes an official member of the executive club of wealthy nations following a secret agreement with Netanyahu. By the way Netanyahu is one notch higher in status than both Biden, Trump or all other US Presidents in the Bilderberg hierarchy. So Russia understands it always gets better deals talking to the right people in Israel, and not the rickety US presidents who are placed in the White House by the same Bilderberg to start with.

That’s the only reason Russia stays away from West Asian swamp. Moscow’s next globalist assignment involve making sure Iranians are duped into thinking they have Russia’s full support under the upcoming so called comprehensive strategic partnership treaty. After that, the world powers i.e. permanent members of the UNSC, will push for a new round of nuclear talks with Iran where Russia suddenly changes gears by asking Iran to give up most of its nuclear program. In other words it’s telling Iran,’ don’t worry because I have your air’, hence Tehran – in a relaxed fashion – gives up its advanced nuclear program in exchange for bubble gum. Again history is going to repeat itself like happened during the former Qajar Dynasty of Persia.

The world remembers Libya and how Moscow stood idle while Libya took to pieces their entire nuclear program and didn’t even blink when NATO invaded the most prosperous African country.

Since WWII, Moscow has been acting as a notorious double-crosser due to their pursuit of maintaining a status quo in the international arena. A new era won’t come after Putin and Trump start their talks. Trump is in no position to offer a deal. Bilderberg group is the one in charge of everything in the west and it seems Netanyahu has already arranged deals with Moscow. There’s only one very big issue and that is Iran which is not Libya and its nuclear program can’t be dismantled . Tehran has long past the point of no return threshold. It means no longer possible to destroy it by direct or indirect attacks.

The only thing that was unclear to me was why the Iranians were so passive over all of this, but the above clarifies it:

    Possible explanation here:

There is interesting speculation on role of Iran in downfall of Assad. Apparently, Iran had been unhappy about Assad for a while and decided to withdraw Iranian Revolutionary Guards from Aleppo so as to put pressure on Assad.

“Sadly all of you wrong with my respect .. I am from Iraq we know whats going on in Syria .. let me tell you an important information . Iran isn’t the big loser because Iran plotted the fall of Assad as a revenge from his last behaviour towards them. When Lebabnon war started Hezbollah former leader Nasurallah was supposed to be escorted to Syria to operate from there.. However Assad refused this request despite Iranian pressure on him.. Then as you know Nasrullah was assassinated this pissed Iran a lot therefore Iran withdrew its miltia that supported Assad in Syria conflict as a punishment to him and a message telling him you are nothing without us. Thus Assad regimen collapsed so quickly. Iranians also made a deal with HTS rebels by telling them do not revenge from Shia and the way is paved for you to Damascus. Sadly this is the true story. Iran pulled its hand from Syria as a signal to Trump they wanted peace…â€

    http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=e7dQ2cJicPc&t=3988s

We also have this report from Thierry Meyssan:

“…Then, these forces attacked Aleppo, until then defended by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. The latter withdrew without a word, leaving a small garrison of the Syrian Arab Army to defend the city. Faced with the disproportion of forces, the Syrian government ordered its troops to withdraw to Hama, which they did on November 29, after a brief battle…

…Ali Larijani, special envoy of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, went to Damascus to explain the withdrawal of the Revolutionary Guards from Aleppo and to set conditions for military aid from the Islamic Republic of Iran; astonishing cultural conditions for a secular state.

In a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, President Bashar al-Assad said that the “terrorist escalation†was aimed at “trying to fragment the region, to crumble its states and to redraw the regional map in accordance with the interests and objectives of America and the West.†However, the official statement does not reflect the mood of the conversation. The Syrian president wanted to know who had ordered the Revolutionary Guards to abandon Aleppo. He did not get an answer. He then warned President Pezeshkian about the consequences for Iran of a fall of Syria. Nothing worked. Tehran continued to demand that it be given the keys to Syria to defend it…

On December 6 and 7, the Doha Forum was held in Qatar. Many Middle Eastern figures participated alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. On the sidelines of the Forum, a guarantee was given to Russia, (which represented President al-Assad), that the soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army would not be pursued and that the military bases of the Russian Federation would not be attacked. Another guarantee was given to Iran that the Shiite shrines would not be destroyed, but it seems that Tehran was already convinced of this…â€

Putin has done the same to Iran in the fight over the passage of Zang Zur in the Caucasus to help her Zionist ally, the PAN TURKISM Erdogan, where zionist US/Israel are working with. All are Zionists and enemy of Muslims. Russia is a WEAK country but wants to be viewed as a US ‘equal partner’ where the US does not accept, instead US is seeking destruction and partition of Russia. Putin is so STUPID that never learned from his mistakes when SOLD Libya for concessions, but the West kicked Russia in the ass. Now, is Syria that Putin sold hoping to have a deal in Ukraine. Putin’s last card is Iran. The Zionist Russia promised Iran Sukho-35 and S-400 in exchange for Iranian drones and missile. Iranians have delivered what they have promised not Russia. Iranian are still waiting for the reciprocal return. Iranians pay for the goods, but Russia always has stabbed Iran in the back. No one should trust Russia or Putin. Putin is willing to let Iran falls for few bones, where always has done.

Now, Putin, like Mohammad Dahlan, a traitor Palestinian made MOSSAD AGENT in the prison, trusted by Russia and UGLY Lavorov as ‘Palestinian leader’ and is under protection of UAE,who poisoned Arafat to death on behalf of Mossad, when was seeking treatment in France. Now, Putin tried to poison Assad fo the interest of genocidal Israel. Putin was pushing Assad into normalization with Israel. After Syria fall let by Russia, number of document regarding normalization of Syria with Israel pressured by Russia came out. According to information published by ‘times of Israel’ genocidal Mossad agent, Yossi Cohen, was talking to Assad through Watsapp about Abraham accords, with Syria on Iran’s back , when at the same time Putin pressured Assad to pressured Iranians out of Syria, At the time of take over by ISIS, not many Iranian were in Syria, ONLY Russians who kidnapped Assad and did nothing to stop the terrorists left in Syria, since a DEAL was MADE. Neither Russian soldiers nor Russian bases in Syria have been attacked or removed. ONLY, and ONLY Iranians have been attacked and few Iranians were killed by the ISIS members who were let by US-Turkey-NATO-Russia to take Syria for the interest of ‘greater Israel. Death to enemy of Muslims. Death to traitors.

The only explanation that makes sense is that Assad has always been controlled opposition in the service of the squatters

He never did anything to protect Syria from the Israeli directed predator’s surrounding it

You probably mean “incompatible parts.” It won’t make your comment smarter, but it would make you sound less like Mr. Malaprop (we already have one).

Ah Yes – the Jews are always the real estate people who specialize in stolen property and always aided by the United States military – this time, again a step too far. Sooner or later – Americans will say, “Hey, What the Hell– WTF do we get out of this Jewish scam?”

Obama’s failed coup against Erdogan in 2016 cost the US and NATO one of their biggest allies. Turkey had always been loyal to the US and NATO, but no more.

That one could argue is Putin’s bet.

  40. I read that really slow, backed up several times and reread. I still don’t know what your point is. It is a mess, for sure. You could have said that in one paragraph. In the second paragraph you could have said, nobody has clean hands in this disaster.

That one could argue is Putin’s bet.

  42. Turkish revanchist irredentism is going to come back to haunt them when after allowing it to swallow up vast territory within Syria, the West will egg on the Arabs to take back not only the lost Arab lands but to dismember the enemy while it’s western part (Constantinople) will be captured by Greece with the help of the European forces. Bye, bye Sultan!

“solving his unending stalemate in Ukraine.” sounds great to Western ears I suppose. Care to offer any concrete evidence supporting this statement for the rest of us to consider? Between the fiscal bankrupting of the Empire, the humiliation of confirming military inferiority through steady territorial loss and the blatant ceding of any remain American moral high ground by openly applauding and funding a Nazi regime, I am more inclined to think the Ukraine SMO continues to serve its intended purpose and then some presently. Please correct me with some facts.

It’s only a matter of time before these traitorous potentates are removed

Either by popular uprising or by the end of US taxpayer subsidies supporting their respective police states

After that happens Israel’s time left will be numbered in months and days not years.

  45. @ghali

Nope, Assad did nothing f0r Syria except betray it for his Israeli masters

Anyone who considers him a hero, is out of touch with reality

When you come to the inevitable realization that Nasrallah, Assad and the Mullahs are all controlled opposition in bed with the Israelis (just like Sisi and Abdullah of Jordan)

Then you will have a glimpse of the world the way it really is.

Because if Nasrallah and Assad and the Mullahs were always double agents that leads to the logical conclusion that Putin and Xi were always controlled opposition too.

From there the implications are vast and far reaching (be careful, don’t let your brain explode)

The important thing is to know the truth.

  46. Dear friends, this is not related to this article, but in a way it is related to USA, to USSR, to Venezuela, to Cuba, and to all social experiments that have failed (because USA, USSR and Venezuela’s state have been unable to create wealth and happiness for its 100% of citizens), and to all governments of the whole world, to most of the 8 billions of humans who are living a life of pain and suffering. Because after all life for the majority has been pain and suffering.

That’s why former Senator Robert Bird (Who was a truth teller like Trump) said that the history of mankind is really a history of a 5000 years old war of a global elite against the majority. And that’s why i say that capitalism-imperialism has really about 5000 years of age, and who knows if the 10,000.

Life in this planet has been a heaven for only a few, and a hell for about 90%

That one could argue is Putin’s bet.

Putin’s bet? He chose not to fight in Syria because he wants his remaining armored vehicles in Ukraine.

He is trying to cover a previous bet of a 2.5 week special operation.

It was Russia’s responsibility to attack the Syrian rebel units as they entered from Turkey. Putin was there to provide airpower. A couple Migs would have cut down the force as they lacked AA power.

That did not happen which means:
    1. Russia somehow missed them entering
    2. Russia watched them enter and let it happen

It is looking like #2 at this point.
