MS SCI 102 – Teaching Science in the Elementary Grades

Jervyn E. Guianan II-A

Lesson 1

Activity 1 Defining Science

Fill up the box below with at least 10-15 keywords that pertains to
SCIENCE based on how your previous teachers, readings and classes define science.
Technology Computer
Experiment
Health Medicine Anatomy
Internet Weather Discovery
Innovation Chemistry Nature
Future Curiosity
Machine

Activity 2 The Facets of Science

Science means several things to various individuals and institutions. You can see the
various facets of science in the first column below. On the opposite column, write
your insights and reflection about each of the facets of science.
FACETS OF SCIENCE INSIGHTS AND REFLECTION
1. Science as a broad body of I do believe that science is a broad body
knowledge of knowledge, for me science do guide
the civilization on how to understand
everything and what to expect from
things. Science connects the future with
the past, the past way behind the first
man walks the earth and the future most
of us may not exist. The knowledge
being imparted by science is limitless
because of new discoveries being learn
from day to day.
2. Science as a set of skills Science can be a set of skills, but for me,
science is a way of understanding things
that can make daily living easier.
3. Science as an intellectual Yes, science is an intellectual activity.
activity Science with mathematics as believe by
the lead theoretical physicist can explain
everything that happens in the world. Not
only that science is an intellectual activity
because of all the experiments you can
perform with it.
4. Science as a social activity In my point of view science can be a
social activity, but mostly it is done by
some individuals alone. I think that
science as a social activity is only used in
higher classification of experimentation.
5. Science as problem-solving Yes, as I have said earlier science is a
way of understanding everything in
existence and from the pas, which makes
science as a way of solving the missing
links or connecting ideas with reality.
6. Science as a career In reality behind big company such as
Tesla, SpaceX and apple and many
more companies also with the agency
like NASA and our very own PAGASA,
there are so many scientists or some call
them science people making money on
science as their career. Also, so many
top tier universities all over the world hire
scientists to make researches and
experiment that could probably lead to
latest discovery that can catapult their
name into the very best.
7. Science as a global human From my answer on number 6, yes, it is a
endeavor global achievement for every discovery
the field of science make.
8. Science as a process For me science set the rules of
processing information and data from
reality.
Activity 3 The Scientific Method

Scientific method refers to a set of steps for verifying and building scientific knowledge.
Steps include making valid observations, interpreting results and generalizing results.
The scientific method allows researchers to independently and impartially test
preexisting knowledge and prior findings and subject them to scrutiny and
enhancements.
Answer the following:

1. What system or method do scientists use to keep track of their studies?

From what I’ve known most of the scientist uses a lab journal, where they
can write down their all of their activities and progress from their research
or studies. Even from the past the lab journal tells the future readers how
did he/she completed his/her studies and those fails he/she encountered.

2. What should you start with if you are going to use this system or method?
For me I would start with Question, most of all a study won’t have a goal if
you didn’t have a question or something to answer with your research.

3. Should you experiment first or make observations first? Why?

From my perspective I would like to make an experiment first then have an
observation. Doing the experiment first may sum up to a conclusion that
would need to be observe for certain areas or characteristics to make a
better study. The by product of the experiment mostly is observe by
scientist.

4. What do scientists call a smart guess?

I think they called it a smart guess because of the fact that a research
does not have a 100% certainty, and also it is a smart guess because of
the process it undergoes. Not only because of no certainty in nature, this
smart guess is an answer given by the studies done, or so what we call
conclusion.

5. Why should you do all experiments at least two or three times?

I do believe that experimentation is sometimes a process of trial and error,
also studies should be done with certainty, that it is better that we use a
quantitative data so we can some-up all the data’s we can gather.
Activity 4 The Scientific Irony

Science is a very exciting subject and process, but why do teachers have difficulty
engaging all the students in learning and doing science? As a future science teacher,
reflect on this question. Write the reasons why the students love learning
and doing science in the first column and the other reasons for their
disinterest in the third column. Please refer to item number 1 as an example.
Students love science Bu They hate science class
t
1. because science is fun and exciting 1. because some topics and activities
in science are difficult to absorb and
to do

2. because some experiments need

2. because of the entertaining time and would cost them some money
experiments

3. because of some complicated ideas

3. because of new discoveries every and lesson which make it hard for them
lesson that continuously amazes to cope up
them

4. because of too many intellectual

4. because of some interactive activity classes and almost no application of
that can prove what the reality of their learning
lesson
Activity 5 Designing My Future Science Class

Your goal as a future science teacher should be to engage your students to love learning
and doing science. What are the features of an ideal science class?
Characterize or describe each of the elements below.
ELEMENTS CHARACTERISTICS/FEATURES
As a teacher I would be encouraging that
most of the students would be happy to
see me every class. I will do my best to
make the class interactive and also
entertaining that the students can enjoy
my class and wouldn’t absent.
TEACHER
I do believe that the curriculum is given
by the Department of Education, but in
my class, I will always add some
interactive activities and activities that
can boost their performance in class.
CURRICULUM
The student would be cooperative and
attentive and would always participate on
activities recitation. They would likely be
excited on every class meeting.

STUDENTS
The classroom would have a good
lighting and light environment, containing
some of the class experiments. The walls
would be filled of scientific experiment,
class information, class records, and
teachers records. The class have a
complete scientific laboratory equipment,
CLASSROOM that are allowed beyond the laboratory.
the class would a monthly activities that
with participation of their parents, also a
movie viewing that is related to the
lesson.

Activity 6 Characterizing an Inspiring Science Teacher

Research shows that the teacher is the most important factor in the effective delivery of
classroom instruction. Engaging classes are facilitated by inspiring science teachers.
Teacher Coco is a future science teacher. What do you think are the important traits that he
needs to possess for him to become an inspiring science teacher?

Important traits Teacher Coco needs to possess

to be an inspiring science teacher:

1. Awesome
2. Attentive
3. “Mapanghikayat”
4. “Madiskarte”
5. “May malawak na kaalaman sa Lesson”
6. “May kasanayan sa pananalita, o public
speaking. Naniniwala ako na ang isang
magaling na mananalita ay mayroong
kakayahan ibaun sa isipan at puso ng
tagapakinig ang kanilang mensahe.”
7. “ mabait at may mahaba at malaking
pasensya”
