Hail Satan 😘
Really hoping that Osgood Perkins has long legs in Hollywood because he knows how to direct one hell of a chilling and unsettling horror/mystery. With superb camerawork, framing & shot composition, excellent cinematography, an eerie score, top-notch production & sound design, haunting imagery, and great pacing, LONGLEGS is easily one of the most effective and finely crafted serial killer horror pictures I've seen in quite some time. It's not totally what I was expecting though, it decides to drop in a supernatural element very early into it, but that's just something you have to accept as the story goes along. It's also in no way "the scariest film of the decade" but it is one of those movies that pulls you in and engrosses you in it's dark & dread-filled lense, so when you leave the theatre, you'll be very much relieved to be out in our world again. Excellent performances across the board as well. Nicolas Cage is genuinely horrific, Maika Monroe gives one of the best outings of her career, and Blair Underwood is as charismatic and reliable as ever, but the one who truly impressed me was Alicia Witt (from one of my favourite 90s slashers, URBAN LEGEND). I don't know where she's been but I need more of her in all things horror! She's completely unrecognizable, disappearing into her role of Pyscha Monroe's mother, Ruth, and she fucking kills it. At times, she was scarier and making me feel more uneasy than Nicolas Cage as Longlegs. She was the real MVP of this dour & uncomfortable devil of a picture. Definitely check out LONGLEGS if you want to get your fix of atmospheric 90s-set serial killer crime-thrillers, like: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS & SE7EN, but with a supernatural & satanic touch.
