This movie had some of the best marketing I’ve ever witnessed with my blue eyes and I was incredibly excited for this movie because of that. I can happily say that it didn’t disappoint in a single way, cause oh my fucking god this thing creeped the living fuck out of me.
Tbh I don’t even know where tf to start, I’m so blown away by this. Maika Monroe is masterful and a fantastic protagonist, I think this was the first thing I ever saw her in but I NEED more. Although Monroe’s performance is amazing, there is another performance that kinda takes away all the attention on Maika. Nicolas Cage is absolutely INCREDIBLE… Jezus Christ this man scared the living hell outa me. The movie does an incredibly smart thing by not showing his character’s face till a far point in the film. Bc of this his presence is felt very strongly without even showing his horrifying face. It just makes for such a creepy and unsettling vibe that I fucking loved. Once they do fully show him, he goes fully mental delivering one of the best performances I’ve seen this year. Fucking incredible, truly hope the academy finally gives some props to the horror genre and just nominates this man for a fucking Oscar, he 100% deserves it in my opinion!
One of the main reasons why this movie is so goddamn unsettling is the brilliant camerawork and sound design. The film does a very smart thing where in almost every scene, the characters shown are in the middle of the screen. That alone is amazing, but the great thing is the space around. They always show so much exterior of the scene and it just makes you so incredibly nervous for a jump scare that could come, although they almost never do. Like I said, the sound design is excellent too. From the trailers alone I knew it was gonna be insane but seeing and hearing this in the theater truly was something else. Love how loud and creepy it was at times, sometimes the sound alone just scared the shit out of me and it was great.
This movie is scary in two different ways imo, one I already kind off explained with the camera and sound design. Also include jump scares in there bc people told me this didn’t have any, well they lied. I jumped out of my seat multiple times, but it’s a horror movie so ofc you’ll get some of that. The other big reason this creeped me out is just how crazy the plot is. I still don’t know wtf I watched (in case of the story). I just got so weird with all of the satanic stuff, not that I didn’t like it, loved it actually, but it just left such an unsettling vibe on me and really got me thinking about some weird shit. So I give the film a lot of props for that, although it did fucking creep me out.
Overal, Osgood Perkins just gave this movie so incredibly much sauce and I loved every single bit of it. Cage and Monroe are excellent, the camerawork is brilliant, the sound design is outrageously good and it’s all just such a scary good time. It’s definitely not for the light hearted people, I gotta say that it’s one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen, although I do have to admit that I haven’t seen that much terrifying stuff. Long story short, Longlegs is fantastic and horrifying, please check it out!
