Demons in the Forest (森の魔物達, Mori no Dēmon Tachi) is the third chapter of the KonoSuba Bakuen manga series, and covers Chapters 2 to 3 in Volume 1 of the light novels.

Summary[]

Yunyun loses the arm wrestling contest against Megumin at school after Shadow tickles her, then as Megumin munches on her bento talks about teaming up for the field classes they have next. Arue offers to team up with Megumin, while Yunyun is readily invited by Funifura and Dodonko in what Arue describes as stealing.

In the woods outside the village, Pucchin briefs the class on how he will Freeze Bind monsters so the students can kill them for experience points in a traditional process the clan calls "farming". Soon afterwards as most of the class wield props looking like gigantic weapons, a reluctant Yunyun is goaded by Funifura and Dodonko to stab with her real dagger a frozen cute looking rabbit growing a horn, so Megumin with Shadow clinging to her walks up and starts forcing a struggling Dodonko to kill it instead, while Arue has no qualms with slaying her prey.

Suddenly, Arue spies in the nearby woods a monster looking like a winged Demon, prompting the girls to run off in terror. The monster though swoops ahead to cut off Megumin and Yunyun, so Megumin offers up Chomusuke to be eaten in her place, yet upon seeing the frightend cat, the monster lands before peacefully approaching. Yunyun however tries to stop it with her dagger, before the alerted Pucchin zaps it down with Cursed Lightning.

With afternoon classes cancelled after the attack by that servant of the Evil Spirit, Megumin takes Yunyun to her home, outside which they find her NEET neighbour Bukkororii loitering. Following an introduction to the chief's daughter, Bukkororii explains that he needs the young girls' help with hitting on Soketto the fortune teller, whose home they go to observe as the village's number one beauty sweeps the doorstep. Bukkororii then asks the girls to inquire Soketto for the kind of man she likes, and when an irritated Megumin instead suggests him to ask Soketto divine his future to find out who his girlfriend will be, he explains to the exasperated girls how he doesn't have the money for it.

The girls later agree to accompany Bukkororii into the woods, where he will hunt a One-Punch Bear for its valuable liver. Casting Light of Reflection to make himself invisible, he then disappears as the One-Punch Bear discovers the girls, much to their horror.

It so happened that after Komekko solved the initial puzzle, another more difficult puzzle appeared, thus with Host promising food for progress, she set to work on it. As she played with the puzzle, Komekko explained to Host how this was her only pasttime, since her parents were frequently absent while she had no friends of her age. Host then offerred to keep Komekko company, and after some goading from her allowed the little girl to eat the food beforehand, then had to beg her into continuing working instead of taking a nap.
