Magic is a supernatural power that allows its user to alter the fabric of reality. It is especially prominent in Hooky as most of the plot revolves around the use of magic.

Transmission and Users[]

Pendragon and the guards

In humans, the ability to perform magic is an inborn attribute. Everyone possesses magic, but being able to manifest and control it depends on the skills and the predisposition of each individual. Witches seem to be the race with the most affinity in magic. While normal humans must study and practice for a long time to be able to use magic, witches show a natural predisposition to it, many manifesting it naturally at an early age. This is probably due to the fact that witches come from a long line of magic users.

Humans are not the only ones who can use magic. Several species of creatures can also perform some kinds of magic, such as sirens and spirits, which can enchant people or cast spells. The fire-breathing ability shown by dragons and fire-tongued frogs may also be of magical origin.

Spellcraft[]

Dorian using a levitation spell

Magic usually requires an incantation, which consists of reciting specific spoken spells in an unknown language, or a gesture with a wand. However, these seem to exist only to aid the user, at is evidently also possible to use magic without holding a wand or speaking, as shown several times by powerful witches like Dani, who is seen several times levitating[1], using psychokinesis[2] or casting spells[3] at will. Most users can cast a spell without spoken words once they have mastered it, but they still need a wand as an intermediary to control their magic.

Some kinds of magic may require specific supplies or tools to be cast. For example, most humans fly by enchanting a broom, and the Puppet spell requires both a set of ingredients and a dummy to cast the spell on.[4][5]

Some of the known spells include:

  • Debilitating spell
    • The first spell Pendragon teaches in his class and is usually seen as "weak" or "childish".
  • Barrier spell
    • A spell that both Damien and Angela know, and seem to be a Wytte trademark.
  • Levitation spell
    • A spell that is mostly used by Dorian and one of the first spells demonstrated in Hooky. Monica also learns this spell.
  • Ice spell
  • Animal spell
    • Only seen performed by Damien, this spell turns the target into an animal (such as rats, snakes, and bugs).
  • Dummy spell
    • Performed by Damien, once on Dorian when he was supposed to be burned alive, and once on himself to distract Donato.

Potions[]

Potions

Potions are liquids that hold magical properties when ingested or used. They can be brewed by anyone, but only Witches can brew potions with any ingredient and still have the desired effect. Some of them wear off, and some of them are permanent. Humans can create potions but must follow a recipe, as shown with Monica and Grandmother Wolf.

According to Pendragon, making potions is the safest and most discreet way to practice magic, as well as the oldest form of magic.

Some potions from the comic include:

  • Love potion
    • brewed by Monica and Dani to get Mark to fall in love with Dani (which instead made him hostile towards her for a short time)
  • Minor healing potion
    • brewed by Monica and Dani originally as a peace offering. Monica and Dorian kept emergency vials of it around their necks.
  • Magic removal potion
    • brewed by Monica and used on Angela, and kept in a vial as a last resort. Intended to be used on Dani to break the curse, but wasn't needed after all.
  • Advanced healing potion
    • A modified version of the healing potion, Monica attempted to use it on Dani when she crashed her wedding.
  • Cough potion
  • Hair removal potion
    • Not confirmed, but was brewing when Mark stuck his head in the cauldron in Monica's lab
  • Potion of a thousand uses
    • The healing potions Alice and Romas stole from the kids and sold as their own. It had a negative side effect which turned the user into a werewolf.

Artifacts[]

12

Not to be confused with items, which are all significant items in Hooky regardless of magical properties.

Sometimes magic is stored inside objects, and usually, those objects are old or even ancient. These are usually the most common witch imagery.

Examples of magical artifacts include:

  • Spellbooks (or any books)
  • Wands
  • Scrolls/old papers
  • Jewelry
  • Brooms
  • Skulls
  • Jars with various objects inside them (potions, eyeballs)
  • Cauldrons
  • Crystal balls

Limits of Magic[]

Regardless of how powerful a user is, there are some boundaries that cannot be overcome, even with magic. For example, it was implied several times that magic cannot bring the dead back to life. Magic also can't be used to create objects out of thin air, as every time a spell is cast it requires something from the user, may it be energy or certain ingredients. For example, when Dorian and Damien rebuilt Pendragon's house, they had to gather all the necessary wood, cement and bricks beforehand.
