Monica's Castle is a location seen in Hooky. It is Princess Monica's home, as well as the seat for her kingdom. Originally owned by her father and mother, the King and Queen; It was taken over by the Wytte Family during the war with the witches.

Appearance[]

The castle is first seen in episode 10. It originally has more of the appearance of a fortress rather than a castle proper. It is square shaped, with four tall towers in each corner with a cone-shaped roof on top of each. It has a large, arched shaped, wooden door on the front, as well as a similar, smaller sized door on the side. There are small windows towards the tops of the walls and towers. The castle has a pinkish tint to it. While it's not reflected in its design, there are balconies extend off the castle. It sits on the cliffs that border the sea. There is a short road from the castle that leads down the cliffs, across a small river, to a village. The village features small, cobblestone cottages with gabbled roofs. The village is surrounded by wooden fencing, in early appearances this was a short fence, while in episode 57 this was much taller.

The interior of the castle is also pink in tint, featuring tall ceilings and arched windows throughout. Throughout the castle are portraits of the royals, and it is decorated with white roses. William's room has more blue colors, on things such as the bedding, drapes, and rug.

The servant's quarters where Damien resides are more bleak than the rest of the palace, with exposed stone walls and wood beams, and are in shades of gray.

Beginning in episode 140, which is also the first time we see the castle since the time skip, it is seen with a slightly altered appearance. It now has a triangular shaped roof over it, giving it more of the appearance of a castle. There are mini towers attached to each of the four main towers, as well as window nooks in the roofs of the towers. There is also an arched, covered bridge extending off the castle to an additional tower. On another side of the castle, there is a small extension, featuring arched windows and a sloped roof. The castle itself seem to be in some state of disrepair, with windows being cracked and broken, drapes being ripped, and broken furniture. The castle village is also in a poor state, with many homes falling apart and crumbling, though it is still somewhat inhabited, presumably by witches.

In episode 218, after Dani's curse is lifted and she abdicates as Queen of the Witches, the castle returns to its original pink hue.

Story[]

During Monica's flashback in episode 33, we see that Prince William and her first met in the castle as toddlers. William eventually moved into the castle alongside Damien when he was older a few years later. Eventually, Ivy and Anne moved into the castle to be Monica's ladies-in-waiting, and Amir and Aisha would come to stay in the castle during the summers. The young royals spend many happy years here.

It's first appearance during the actual story is in episode 10, approximately a week after William's kidnapping from the palace by Hilde Wytte. William's father and mother are seen meeting with Monica's father and mother, discussing how this happened. Monica locked herself in her room during this time, being comforted by Ivy and Anne during this distressing time.

The castle is not seen again until episode 57, when Monica, Dani, Dorian, Nico, and Mark attend the ball. At first, the group feared that it was a trap set by the king to capture the Wytte kids, though he reveals this was not his intention, and rather he wanted to invite them (and Nico) to live in the palace to offer them protection from their family. The friends, excited to begin their new lives, become acquainted with Monica's royal friends. However, after a misunderstanding between the group - Dani, Nico, and Mark leave the ball to attend a party being held for witches outside in the castle town. Meanwhile, Monica and Dorian have a confrontation with Damien, as the brothers believe that the other one is the prophesized King of the Witches.

At midnight, the Wytte Family and their army attacks both the main palace and castle town, with Hans and Hilde leading dragons into the castle, and Angela rallying witches in the village. The group in the palace are trapped, trying to save each other and evading capture. Initially appears that the king has planned for this attack to happen, and with the help of Pendragon manages to trap a dragon, Hans, and Hilde. However, Damien accepts his fate as the King of the Witches, turning the king into a toad, and taking his crown and destroying part of the castle. The group inside the palace, initially believing they were trapped, narrowly avoid capture due to Damien covering for their escape.

Meanwhile, the group in the village plan to fight back as the royal guards, who believe the king was killed by Damien, and the witch army begin to clash and destroy the town. During this, one of Dani's friends, Alex, is killed by a royal guard in retaliation. This leads to Dani losing control, attacking the guards, and substantially destroying the village in the process.

We see several months later, in episode 76, that Damien resides in the main palace with his mother and army, while secretly planning out a way to save William with the help of Pendragon, who is held captive in the dungeons.

The castle and village are briefly seen during episode 132, when Mark, Aisha, and Pendragon go undercover in a tavern to find out more about Dani's whereabouts. Meanwhile, at the castle - Angela, Hilde, and Dani hold a funeral for Hans.

The palace is not seen again until three years later, in episode 140. The castle has had some additions added on since then, and is now the residence of Dani, now possessed and Queen of the Witches. Angela and Hilde still reside there, along with Alice, Romas, and the Old Lady working as servants. Nico lives in the castle in hiding, sneaking in to help Dani regain her memories.

The castle is not seen again until episode 218, where we see it in the distance on the day of Dani's abdication. The castle seems to have been repaired, as well as the castle town. Angela stays in the palace after the war is over with Damien, while Dorian and Dani have a cottage not far from the castle grounds. Presumably, it remains one of the primary residences of King William and Queen Monica.

Trivia[]

  • Dorian, Nico, and Dani were all invited to live in the palace by the king during the ball, and while this did not happen at that time due to Damien's take-over, all three eventually do live there; Dani lives there as queen, Nico hides there when Dani is queen, and Dorian presumably stays there after Monica becomes queen.
