Donald Trump has buried George W. Bush, for good. Or so we hope.
This might not be “Morning in America,” but it is a moral victory for values in America. Somewhere in those Judeo-Christian values touted by “values voters” is an injunction against mass murder.
Before the February 20 South Carolina primary, it looked as though G. Bush might just make a comeback.
After the South Carolina primary, where Donald Trump won with 32.2 percent of the Republican vote, it seems certain that nothing will resuscitate the legacy of “one of the nation’s worst presidents.”
Notwithstanding his war crimes and unprecedented intervention in the financial system and the private economy, “W” also happened to preside over the largest domestic spending since Lyndon Johnson. As chronicled in Ivan Eland’s “Recarving Rushmore: Ranking the Presidents on Peace, Prosperity, and Liberty,” “[Bush] advocated bad policies and demonstrated horrendous operational incompetence.”
The disastrous and expensive (in casualties and money) nation-building project in Iraq and Afghanistan were only exceeded in catastrophic results by Bush’s expansion of executive power and theft of the civil liberties that make the United States unique. Bush had almost no accomplishments to offset such foibles.
Trump addressed the war: “They lied. They said there were weapons of mass destruction. There were none. And they knew there were none. There were no weapons of mass destruction.”
The chattering class, Left and Right, was—still is—gobsmacked. A political Samson was bringing down the pillars of their world.
Desperate to restore equilibrium before the crucial South Carolina vote was CNN’s Anderson Cooper: “You would not say again that George W. Bush lied?”
Trump obliged. He backpedaled before the primary, going with non-committal: “I don’t know. I can’t tell you. I mean, I’d have to look at documents.”
So America has some unfinished business. Because we do know. We can say for sure. And we have all the documents.
George W. Bush lied America into war.
Bush began his ballyhooed presidency by lying during his campaign. He promised America a humble foreign policy, but came into office with the express purpose of using his plenary powers to unseat Saddam Hussein.
Reliable sources—vaunted officials such as the former head of the CIA’s counterterrorism office, Vincent Cannistraro—attested that Bush started plotting to “settle” old scores with Saddam Hussein as soon as he got to the White House.
This was well after the International Atomic Energy Agency vouched Iraq had “dismantled its nuclear program.” To good effect, Bush and his bandits dusted off “decade old” IAEA reports and presented these as the casus belli for a new war.
Yes, the Bush reports about Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction were a “decade old”; out-of-date and inapplicable, when they were deployed to go to war, in 2003.
In 2004, U.S. weapons inspector David Kay was tasked with a post-invasion investigation as to why no WMD were found in Iraq. The evidence Kay marshaled was the same old evidence those of us who opposed the war cited back in the dying days of 2002.
Having publicly fumed about the impotence of the IAEA’s much-maligned inspection process, Kay found himself in the embarrassing position of vouching for IAEA effectiveness.
IAEA inspectors were, in fact, still crisscrossing Iraq when Bush invaded.
For his 2004 tome “Plan of Attack,” author Bob Woodward was given his usual unparalleled access. Woodward conducted 75-odd interviews with members of the Bush administration’s inner sanctums, Bush too. Woodward concluded, and was lauded by the proud culprits themselves:
“Bush is in charge. Bush is all over [Iraq].”
“Just five days after September 11,” by Woodward’s telling, the president indicated to National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice that he was determined to do something about Saddam Hussein.”
On November 21, 2001, the bombastic Bush who had characterized his war as “the story of the 21st Century,” demanded an invasion plan from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
“Get on it,” Bush barked.
Gen. Tommy Franks was then given carte blanche to develop such a strategy, for which the president, unbeknownst to Congress, siphoned $700 million from a supplemental appropriation for the Afghan War.
On February 16, 2002, Bush signed a “Top Secret intelligence order” granting authority to the CIA and the military to commence covert operations in Iraq.
December 21, 2002 saw CIA Director George Tenet and his deputy John McLaughlin summoned to the Oval Office to screen a slideshow of Iraq’s alleged WMD.
The president took the lead. He made it clear that Tenet had to deliver on his promise of an intelligence “slam dunk.” Alas, G. Bush was wholly unimpressed by the “rough cut”:
“Nice try, but that isn’t gonna sell Joe Public.”
“Richard Clark, the White House anti-terrorism coordinator, reported that on the day after 9/11, even after he protested that there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and the 9/11 attacks, Bush personally insisted that he look for one.” Clark’s memo disavowing such a connection was returned by the “office of Bush’s National Security Adviser with the comment: Wrong answer. Do it again.”
Soon, Secretary of State Rice was filling her days with forecasts of a Saddam-seeded nuclear-winter.
On September 8, 2002, this liar told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that “We do know that there have been shipments into Iraq of aluminum tubes that really are only suited to nuclear weapons programs.” David Albright of the Institution for Science and International Security was appalled. “That’s just a lie,” he reiterated to New Republic.
The “Lie Factory—the Office of Special Plans”—was a central edifice of the Bush administration.
The OSP, reminisces Justin Raimondo in a retrospective about Bush’s lies, was “a parallel intelligence-gathering agency set up by the neoconservatives in the administration [to feed] Congress and the media ‘factoids’ which were later proved to be false.”
To make his sub-intelligent case for war, Bush mustered the fictitious uranium from Africa, the aluminum tubes from Timbuktu, the invisible “meetings” with al-Qaida in Prague, an al-Qaida training camp that existed under Kurdish—not Iraqi—control, as well as the alleged weaponized chemical and biological stockpiles and their attendant delivery systems that inspectors doubted were there and which never-ever materialized.
“Guilt is an intrinsic quality of actions,” wrote the 19th-century American philosopher of liberty, Lysander Spooner. Judging by the actions they commanded, former President George Bush “and his neoconservative Rasputins” were–are—as guilty as sin for the crime of Iraq.
Before his February 23 victory in the Nevada caucuses, fresh from the win in South Carolina, Trump returned to Fox News to dance on George Bush’s political grave. Pompous Chris Wallace imagined he’d get the upper hand with Donald Trump, but ended up changing the subject … quickly.
“The pundits, including yourself,” blasted a triumphant Trump, “thought I made a mistake when I took on Bush on that issue. But when I took on Bush on that issue, I never felt it was a bad thing to do because people that are smart know that the war in Iraq was a disaster.”
No more “neoconservative Rasputins.” “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” Or, in Bushspeak: “Fool me once, shame on … shame on you. Fool me … You can’t get fooled again!”

FWIW the former Australian PM Malcolm Fraser, who had been a hawkish supporter of the US in Vietnam, as early as 2004 said clearly that the US (and Australia) had gone to war in Iraq on a “lie”. While he was very embittered about his old Treasurer, in 2004 PM, John Howard I presume he had some good sources of information that he was right to rely on.

In manner of speaking, this is all coming full-circle. The popularity of Trump is the result of Americans getting shafted by 30 years of Bushes and what the Bushes represent.
Americans love Ronald Reagan, rightly or wrongly. Now personally, I don’t count myself among those Reagan-loving Americans and I think his reputation is somewhat at odds with reality. But debating the Reagan legacy is beyond the scope of my comment here. The point is that Reagan is associated in the popular mind with good times.
Herbert Walker Bush rode into the White House on Reagan’s coattails. What Americans really wanted was 4 more years of Reagan when they voted for Bush in ’88. Instead they got Desert Storm, “read my lips,” and the New World Order. This opened up a rift in the Republican party that was exploited by Ross Perot (who, with his plain talk, charisma, and business sense was a lot closer to the popular image of Reagan), and that allowed Bill Clinton to sneak into the Oval Office with a whopping 43% of the popular vote. Clinton, despite his obvious flaws, managed to keep his stock just high enough for reelection by not enacting left-wing economic policies—partly as a result of his own “triangulation” and partly due to the obstruction of a Republican congress. Ironically, the discipline of congressional Republicans, by not allowing Clinton’s worst aspects to rise to the surface and become visible, may have prevented Americans from seeing fully who he really was.
Then we come to W. and to my main thesis. I submit that the legacy of popular conservatism and economic prosperity associated with Ronald Reagan was still in operation in 2000, and that is what really drove the election of George W. Bush. So strong was Reagan’s aura that it propelled W. along on the coattails of his father who was propelled on the coattails of Reagan. The mere name association of Bush-Reagan basically engendered the whole W. campaign, only Americans were once again fooled by their own aspirations in not seeing W, for who he really was. The ensuing disasters of the W. years do not need recounting here, save one: the election of Barack Obama was the greatest “man caused disaster” America has witnessed in a century and a half.
Now that we’ve been burned enough times, we will never vote for a Bush ever again. Republican voters, like fish, are very slow to learn anything new, but once they learn something they learn it very well. The Bushes are not going to give us what we really want. Trump will.
I realize this analysis is rather abbreviated and simplified, but sometimes underneath all the sturm und drang the root of the matter really is quite simple. Americans have not had one of their own as president for the last 28 years and we’re sick of it.

I think there must be more to American leaders hating people like Ayatullah Khamenei, et al. than the possibility of their being more honest than Western leaders. I mean, having someone keep saying “Death to America” and claiming it is a slogan “backed by reason and wisdom,” must be fairly annoying to any US President. As for Nasrallah, his forces gave America’s best friend a bit of a licking in 2006, and now the scoundrel is backing Assad, who Obama has been trying to oust for years.
Anyhow, its easier to be honest when you don’t have to face elections. In Lebanon, for example, the government recently postponed the elections for a few years. As for Iran, the Supreme Leader is apparently elected in a round-about way by people he himself appointed, i.e., he holds the position probably for life.

For the first time I have profited from a Rehmat post. I had never heard the fruity 1950s ABC not 100% Australian voice of Anthony Charles Ashton Lawson who died in Phuket a year ago aged 79 and was an extremely skilled producer of videos which can be seen on YouTube (including his one complaining about YouTube censorship).
I enjoyed his castigation of Jon Faine whose ABC talkback program I gave up listening too years ago because Faine is and always has been (as an ABC person anyway) a pr**k. And I hadn’t heard the broadcast with Malcolm Fraser which I too recommend.

One of the best things I read that “proves” that GWB knew there were no weapons of mass destruction is this simple argument. When the time came to attack Iraq, Turkey would not give approval for an invasion to be launched from its territory. Kuwait, settling old scores, did. The US Army massed thousands of troops in a small area, waiting for the signal to invade.
Now, if you knew, or even suspected, that your enemy had lethal nerve gas or small nukes that might have a devastating impact on massed troops in a small area, you would NEVER mass them where WMD could wipe them out. Saddam would have been entirely justified in using his WMD to destroy an army set to wreak havoc on his country. So the explicit military strategy shows: they knew Iraq lacked the capability to defend itself, BEFORE they searched for the WMD that they claimed they KNEW were there.
The one good thing about that was that Bush at least didn’t try to fabricate WMD, as I fully expected his administration would.

If I may…
As a Muslim who doesn’t have a dog in this Judeo-Christian issue, I would have to say two things:
1) Totally agree that the term ‘Judeo-Christian’ is a very recent term (probably due to Israeli-lobby and Evangelical confluence and political influence). A couple of centuries ago, Christians would be quite offended of such a close association with the Jewish culture.
2) I would agree that the Old Testament is not a reliable text on what God revealed (but, full disclosure, I have the same reservations of the New Testament) and tends to present a vision of a God that is exclusive to them, but to assume Christianity to be divorced completely from its Jewish origins is a bit of a stretch. The gap has been developing over centuries, but in its nascency, many Christians lived their day to day life quite like the Jew. This was suppressed when the Gentile-based Catholic church took over the Roman polity and purged strains that it felt were heretical. Our Master Jesus (pbuh) was an expert in Mosaic Law and taught it – there is little evidence he spoke against it wholesale other than a few specific items (like the money lenders incident that someone mentioned – but even that is just him bringing people back to a spiritual purity of the law). He knew about the Old Testament records of destruction of certain cities that rebelled against God, but never overturned or corrected the theology. Slavery, polygamy, etc. – he knew it was happening, but never personally prohibited it. It was Paul who was insistent about departure from Mosaic Law, yet other early church fathers like James the Just disagreed. Much of the moral system still comes from the Old Testament; whither the case against homosexuality or against other sexual vices for instance? If one says, it’s because of what makes sense morally, then good luck holding the line when a culture changes its mind on what they deem moral or not. Another example, for instance is the Psalms-based evidence for the 7-times daily prayers of the Syriac Church (one of the oldest Christian communities). Ethiopian Orthodox still observe kosher-like rules. Maybe the argument here is that you are excluding the Eastern Orthodox churches…
While I would totally agree that the West had little to do with the Talmud as a point of reference for its civilization framework, the Mosaic Law and the lives of the Patriarchs and Prophets have been a general point of reference for a moral code; for instance, the patience of Job (pbuh), the wisdom of Solomon (pbuh), the chastity of Joseph (pbuh),etc. So from this perspective, mentioning ‘Judeo’ as an aspect of ‘values’ would, while perhaps sound like grovelling to ‘the lobby’, but still hold some substance.
