Johnny Roastbeef’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is a hugely significant movie, something I didn’t fully appreciate first time around. In fact I believe it’s ‘Christmas Film’ label holds it back, as strange as that may sound, as it’s definitely more than just a Christmas film. Despite its enormous popularity, It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) would go stratospheric with new generations jumping onboard on a much larger scale if it wasn’t just dusted down and played during the festive season.
Director Frank Capra takes his audience on a journey of heart, warmth, love and despair delivering a finale that is arguably one of the greatest feel good moments in movie history. The carol singing strikes a chord during the film’s closing moments with “Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the new-born King!” resonating not just for George Bailey’s second chance in life, but also for his angel, Clarence. Then there’s the ringing of the Christmas tree bell providing the emotionally fitting conclusion worthy of this truly ‘wonderful’ film.
