It's a Wonderful Life

It's a Wonderful Life

The quintessential Christmas staple, It's a Wonderful Life still retains every bit of its charm, magic & relevance and is a beautiful, heartfelt tale about the value of every human life and the everlasting influence our actions can have on other people's lives. It is a simple premise that's realised on screen with utmost honesty, has aged like fine wine over the years, and is rightfully acknowledged as an enduring classic of American cinema.

Directed by Frank Capra (It Happened One Night & Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), the first two acts of the film play out like the most depressing story about a man who keeps making personal sacrifices for his family & townsfolk. But the way its third act drives home the film's point ultimately makes the entire journey worthwhile and leaves the audience filled with hope, emboldened by strength of human kindness & empowered with the spirit of human potential.

Capra's direction smartly balances the ebb & flow of the story and he never for once hurries through any event, letting each scene play out in its entirety and giving every character their space to breathe & grow. The crisp black-n-white photography, deft camerawork, steady pace & neat editing further enrich the viewing experience. And the cast play their respective roles with sincerity & conviction, with James Stewart's excellent performance leading from the front.

Overall, It's a Wonderful Life is sweet, sentimental & simple-minded but there is a radiance & beauty to its hopeful, optimistic belief that a true selfless act always sparks another and that even in a cynical world, kindness leaves an indelible mark. The film ends on such a merry & triumphant note that it is the very embodiment of the warm, fuzzy, jolly & joyful feeling that Christmas is all about. Every bit worthy of its reputation, this timeless gem is as wonderful as films can get. In short, a masterpiece.
