First time watch: December 2017 Source: Blu Ray 🎅 25 Days of Christmas Films 🎄 Day Twenty-Five
It's a Wonderful Life is the 1946 Frank Capra directed Christmas fantasy film starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. This is the story of George Bailey who is visited by a guardian angel having decided to take his own life on Christmas Eve.
There simply is not enough superlatives to describe my affection for this film. I've been a huge James Stewart fan for many years but only got round to watching this in 2017. I try to not watch the same films year in year out with Christmas titles being the exception. Many Christmas films are actually quite poor but get overwatched simply because of the festive season but I always save Its a Wonderful Life for last because it is genuinely one of my favourite films ever made.
It ends with such an uplifting moment it's enough to make even the coldest person shed a tear. The affection felt towards George Bailey is so overwhelming it never ceases to amaze me. Much credit should be given to Frank Capra who is able to structure a story in a way that allows us to become so invested in this one character. In contrast the character of Mr Potter is one of the meanest villians ever written to the point he actually makes me angry.
Theres not much need to gush any further, so many people already feel the same way. James Stewart and Donna Reed are now stars that shine brightest at Christmas as the world watches their magic on screen every year.
