Das Leben ist selten schön, aber dieser Film ist es durchaus. Die größte Stärke ist James Stewarts Charakter, für den sich hier viel Zeit genommen wird, was sich auszahlt. Seine Figur ist kein aalglatter Saubermann, sondern eine tragische, depressive und eigentlich dauerhaft unglückliche Persönlichkeit, mit leicht cholerischen Touch. Das Ende liefert dann den unvermeidbaren Kitsch, aber insgesamt ist das schon sehr gut gealtert. Die Farbversion finde ich fast noch etwas besser.
