After years of development hell, a film adaptation of the famous Broadway musical Wicked has arrived. Going in, one of my biggest concerns was the length. It's a whopping 160 minutes! That's essentially the entire length of the Broadway musical right there. Unfortunately, my worst fears were realized as the movie was very bloated. Several plot points were needlessly drawn out and the pacing was inconsistent. I guess Univeral wanted to maximize their ROI by splitting it into two parts.
But even with these concerns, I must commend the filmmakers for knowing their audience. Even with the excessive use of CGI, Universal spared no expense with the extravagant production design. Usually with musicals, my enjoyment is very dependent on the songs. In Wicked, I found the songs to be of average quality as they sound similar to other modern show tunes. It's not the type of music I enjoy, but many others do. Wicked isn't the kind of movie that appeals to me, but it's certainly a crowd-pleaser for musical fans.
