Greg Rath-Pribyl’s review published on Letterboxd:
I didn't plan on seeing "Wicked" originally. The trailers did not capture my interest and I never saw the original stage production (I just knew the concept and the songs "Popular" and "Defying Gravity"). It was the surprising positive reception and the fact that this was directed by Jon M Chu who did "In The Heights" that made me decide to check it out. Also I do enjoy a good musical.
Wicked is a film that gets better and better as it goes on. I thought it was okay in the first 30-40 minutes, I started to enjoy it more once Elphaba and Glinda became friends, and I was hooked by the time they got to Emerald City. I'll admit I even got a little choked up when Elphaba became the Wicked Witch and sang "Defying Gravity" because at that point I was really invested in her and Glinda's story.
I can't say it's a perfect movie as it does start off slow, has some CGI that is not bad but can get distracting, and there are a couple minor subplots that feel like unnecessary detours.
However, even though it's not perfect, this was a real pleasant surprise! It does make me excited to see Part 2.
I highly recommend this film. Even if you are not a musical fan, there is stuff here that I am sure you will like.
