The anticipated problems are present. The colors are consistently washed out which detracts from the vibrancy this is going for visually and emotionally, and it's super bloated which was always gonna be the case when you take the entire length of the musical to tell one half of the musical. This drags a lot during the Shiz University portion of the film. I haven't seen the musical (I tried to get tickets when in New York once, but I couldn't.), but I can tell pretty easily that that's the portion of the story that was padded. The last hour is pretty breezily paced though which is the tempo this story needed. What really makes this work, though, is the musical numbers which are mostly fantastic. There's so much musical movie hate out there now among moviegoers, and I want to rep for them, but it's hard when the pickings are the likes of Joker 2 and Emilia Pérez, but here's a musical movie that, at least as far as the music goes, is very strong.
