Visit The E-meh-rald City
When I saw the first trailer, I was pretty sure this was gonna be terrible. Then I saw the overwhelmingly positive reviews and I figured I'd give it a shot. I didn't have high expectations but went in with an open mind
That said, Wicked does not live-up to the hype. It's like this year's Barbie. It's not a bad film by any means and is an alright way to pass some time, but it's way overhyped and has a poor script with a bunch of annoying characters. Like, seriously, Elphaba, Madame Morrible and The Wizard are the only good characters in the whole movie. It may be intentional to have a lot of the characters be unlikeable, but it doesn't make for a very fun viewing experience
It should also be said that Wicked is everything I dislike about musicals. It's a bunch of annoying songs that come out of nowhere and ruin what could otherwise be really impactful scenes. There's a few decent musical numbers, but there's nothing amazing to be seen (or heard)
To sum things up, I was cringing through a lot of it. I don't really think that's the sign of a good, well-written film. It might be good to those that love the original musical or that are fans of The Wizard Of Oz... But as it stands, I forgot Wicked was an actual stage musical until last month and I haven't seen the 30's film since I was in school
The visuals made it a lot more enjoyable, though! The cinematography is gorgeous and the VFX are great as well
