When Michelle Yeoh said something like “Congrawotlations, welcome to the Shiz” I, for a second, considered whether I was having a stroke. Nope, apparently people just occasionally do weird little alterations to words like that in the land of Oz. Glinda is actually Guhh-Linda in this, there’s a whole scene about it.
Ariana Grande is a natural comedic screen presence, and when Cynthia Erivo first broke into song, there was an instant change of hushed ambience in the theater. They respected that voice.
A top notch production. Jon M. Chu outclassing a large share of big budget studio efforts - the creativity, the musical sequences, the technically impressive sets and costumes. Stage musical adaptations are not usually my sensibility, but I did enjoy it way more than I thought I would. The story is fairly stretched out, this is a 2 and a half hour “Part 1” that doesn’t really call for it (why make a billion once, if you can make it twice). However, if you are a fan of the Broadway musical or love this style of movie, you’ll probably love this.
