I fear I am not the same person I was before viewing Wicked. I’ve never been a huge musical fan, not because I find them bad or annoying, it’s just a genre that I don’t dabble in often. Wicked has quite possibly changed that forever! Ariana Grande, I was unfamiliar with your game, girl. Not only does she crush the comedic moments which is 90% of what she has to do, but in the more emotionally heavy moments she stood toe to toe with Erivo. All the praise will go to her ability to steal any moment with comedic timing but I don’t want to over look her emotional capabilities. She is the lifeblood of the film. Cynthia Erivo is a force, she says so much by doing subtle things with her body language and facial expressions which is the opposite of how Grande is presented so their dynamic is incredible. They bring amazing energy that kept me high and craving more. My biggest issue is the lighting and colors. Oz is vibrant, bursting with life and colors you can feel but that’s not captured fully here. There’s a nasty, life sucking, energy draining light that robs every single frame of its full power. But Grande (my pick for Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards) and Erivo come with so much vigor that it makes up for it. As far as Part 1s in cinema history go Wicked is in the upper echelon. I will likely be singing Defying Gravity for the next 6 months.
