Reminded me how and why I fell in love with this collection of songs back during my musical theatre phase all those years ago. It's not my favourite work by Stephen Schwartz (that would be his collaboration with Alan Menken on Hunchback) but it's undeniable how iconic this soundtrack is. And they really did it justice! While the script does grapple with the hokiness of the plot at times, the movie truly shines when the characters are singing and dancing. I'm honestly bumping up my score half a star just for the insane chills I got during 'Defying Gravity'. A literal showstopper; Cynthia Erivo nailed it.
I just need to have a word with whoever decided on the choices behind the lighting and colour grading because...woof. Why am I being constantly blinded by the sun? Why is the vibrant, wonderful world of Oz so goddamn muted? They built all these lovely, lavish sets and then made a deliberate decision in post to make everything look washed out. It boggles the mind.
