yves 🐉’s review published on Letterboxd:
The musical numbers work to an incredibly impactful and mesmerizing extent, the rest of the film can’t quite compete with that sphere-reaching bar. It‘s great to see Ariana Grande on the big screen again, she is not the best actress by any means, but her vocal range, charismatic demeanor and overall it girl attitude are more than enough qualities to win me over. Speaking of great performances, I‘m honestly more stunned by Cynthia Erivo‘s singing caliber, there are certain song segments where she manages to outperform Grande vocally which is not an easy feat to achieve.
Visually, the film doesn’t look as hideous as the trailers might suggest. Sure, most of the shots were done in the studio and not every animal creature looks as compelling as I hoped, but in its entirety, Wicked has an artificially vibrant look to it that Marvel isn’t able to replicate in years. There is just this one big issue that the Oz formula leaves not much room for originality and therefore, the plot is very predictable, character motivations and shifts feel unnaturally forced and the parts without singing lack the otherwise charming nature.
I genuinely have not much to say, as someone who can see himself singing along to catchy and engaging musical sequences, Wicked‘s mostly solid to outstanding choreographies put lots of smiles and grins on face. My jaw didn’t drop once, but I didn’t expect that to begin with. The runtime of about two and a half hours wasn’t necessary however, there are parts that feel disconnected from the overall plot and more loose on purpose to keep the excitement for the inevitable sequel next year. Yes, Across The Spider-Verse did end on a similar note, but it’s a full film with complete character arcs nonetheless whereas Wicked leaves the audience without answering one question. Would I have watched it if my friend didn’t drag me into it forcefully? No. Did I still enjoy it regardless? Absolutely.
