    Ah, the dreaded Sophomore Slump.

Cooper understandably is feeling himself after A Star is Born, one of the finest debuts of recent memory. That movie, blueprint be damned had the energy and ingenuity of someone who’d been working to that point for their entire lives.

Maestro finds him in both Prestige Director AND Cool Shot mode, which are very dangerous places to be, especially when you’re thrust into the former so quickly.

The images he and Matthew Libatique compose are…

    ★★½

This is a very dumb movie with very clunky writing, but its biggest mistake and departure from reality is that sweatervest guy wasn’t zapped immediately.

  • John Mulaney: Baby J

    John Mulaney: Baby J

So you’re telling me we can get a funny stand up special in the year 2-0-2-3 that doesn’t have 30 minutes set aside for some middle aged dork to whine about cancel culture and how it’s facism (?) that people don’t laugh at their tired & lazy jokes.

    Crazy.

I’m glad that Drug John didn’t kill Normal John. But I do wish we got some clarity on… The Timeline.

First time I’ve seen in…maybe 10 years? Idk. Time is fun.

This is a perfect example of a good movie that Spielberg’s directing elevated into a great one.

This was literally everything I needed it to be.

I concede it's cliched, and not directed with any particular flair or POV, but sometimes you're just looking for a vibe.

The vibe being: spooky, winter-set, with cool costumes and some gorgeous practical filmmaking. I love movies where you can feel the cold. This was no exception.

And it has to be said again: Harry Melling! What an out-of-nowhere cool career from being an HP bit player.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

The “piece of shit” bit went completely over my head on the first two watches.

    Very good.

This movie bangs, and Johnson’s choice to make the big mystery that the villain is an idiot is so so good.

My face got cold for the first time since April so of course I had to throw this masterpiece on.

Well, I finally got around to watching the first (god willing, only) Trump show.

Quickly, my take on the October emails announcement is a little unusual in that I don’t think it decided the election. The further we get from 2016, the clearer it’s becoming to me at least that that election was decided the moment Hillary became the nominee. People were sick of her, the “corrupt” label was already firmly stuck to her and Trump’s base of loser white…

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

    ★★★½

I've never been much of an "eh, I'll throw this on" movie-watcher but for whatever reason, the urge came.

This is about how I remember it, but tbh, has aged really well in its social conscience, as most of the McKay films of this era have. At this rate, this current era will have the reverse effect.

Not sure why, but the news team visibly being in the bar and their reveal as Ron is called back to duty might be my favorite joke.

That and Vince Vaughn dialing it up for no particular reason.

    Good movie!

This is a sturdy, “fuck Bush” genre film that with the cold fury that Oliver Stone’s lost, could have been something more impactful and raw.

It made me very angry, as expected. The way we have coddled and looked back lonvingly at Bush Jr. with nostalgia since he left office is nothing short of maddening. Just because he’s more affable than Trump doesn’t mean he’s not an enormous sack of shit too, y’all.

Bono, Michelle Obama; I’m looking at you!

Might be the greatest movie of all time.

This one’s growing on me, as I hoped.

Day-Lewis is once again next-level, and PTA does this shit like no one else. The aesthetics of Phantom Thread suck me in and keep me there.
