Much like A24's The VVitch, this is a slow burn, eerie cult/satanic movie that just fell flat for me.
Hereditary is undoubtedly one of the smartest and most well directed movies of the year. For his first feature, Ari Aster has accomplished something truly remarkable by tapping into 8 different neuroses you probably have while exposing ones you didn't know were there.
I really can't say enough things about the job he and his…
I saw this in IMAX last Wednesday with my best male friend. He's a pretty big gamer and wayyy more into "nerd culture" than I am.
He thought the movie was sloppy, but enjoyable.
Tonight, I saw it with my best female friend who's more into Friends and stuff like that than gaming. She came to the same conclusion as my other friend did, and without knowing my grade, gave it a 6/10.
I don't know what that says about the movie, but 3 people (counting me) with different backgrounds in "nerd culture" came to the same basic conclusion.
EDITOR'S NOTE: All of this, but Spider-Verse now lol
I don’t like the MCU in principle. Look in my popular reviews and you’ll find a couple instances of me crapping on them, for many different reasons.
The biggest reason I have with the series is that the movies too often feel produced instead of directed. Feige does his job of shepherding the franchise so well that I often leave the theater feeling underwhelmed and like I've wasted my time.
A24 is to cinema what cracking open a cold one is to the boys.
It Comes At Night is definitely a slow burn, but when it heats up you'll probably forget to breathe for a while.
This movie shares a lot of the same DNA as The Invitation, one of my favorite movies of 2016. They're both claustrophobic, intense thrillers with small casts and even smaller budgets.
Even with those limitations, I was still able to have one of my…
Seek and ye shall find only one better thriller released all year. Nocturnal Animals is pulpy, violent and sophisticated cinema that I'm glad we still have.
I wish we could go back and cast Armie Hammer as Batman. He's great.
Captain America: Civil War tries so hard to be perfect and relevant, it fails to be alive.
OPINION TIME: Spider-Man annoyed the hell out of me, Zemo was really cool and had a surprisingly great evil plan, Captain America was crazy inconsistent and kind of an asshole and the movie limped into its action sequences.
Let me start right off the top by saying that all-cgi movies are really not my thing. Even if it looks great, these kinds of flicks have never detached themselves from looking like a computer. I know what I'm looking at isn't real, which kinda hurts the overall experience.
Thankfully for The Jungle Book, it had enough excellent voice-work, pulse-pounding action, humor, and silliness to leave me satisfied.
But unfortunately for this movie, it's built around a really bad performance…
In short, I really enjoyed this movie. With the exception of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, who I thought was flat-out-terrible, I had a really fun time with Dawn of Justice. It surprised, enthralled and impressed me. Which no one can take away.
It could be better, but as far as I am concerned, there was far more room for error than there was improvement, which makes it a win in my book.
