The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011
Let’s take a moment to imagine that instead of Orinoco Flow, Martin spun Steely Dan’s 1972 classic ‘Dirty Work.’ Would have been pretty cool.

The Dark Knight 2008
Does anyone else work themselves into a blind rage thinking about how Heath Ledger isn’t with us anymore, but Henry Kissinger is like 100 and still hanging around?
Anyways, banger movie this is. Looks great on 35mm. Happy Batman Day!

Heat 1995
I know I say this a lot but this really could be the best movie ever made.
The shootout is perhaps the loudest thing I have ever heard in a movie theater. You could feel those echoes down to the fucking marrow.
And of course given this was my first theatrical experience with the movie. It was cool to see it with a crowd that hoots and hollers along with Pacino’s truly euphoric performance.
Movies are good.

Contact 1997
Yup, still owns. The themes and that double ship reveal are still a little clunky but I can forgive all because of the filmmaking and how cool Sagan is.
To spend his life as a scientist and then write something narrative of this quality is such a feat. There are working screenwriters who couldn’t dream of making something as fun and fulfilling as this. And he did it as a hobby lmao. Legend status.
Also it’s too bad that James Woods has gone full noodle-brains, because no one plays a sleazbag or an asshole as well as he can.

You've Got Mail 1998
Definitely raises some ethical questions with regards to Mr. Joe F-O-X but this is such a charming, aesthetically pleasing little movie that we probably don't need to think too much about it.
A rom-com should be made and set for all of the NYC neighborhoods. Gimme a reformed coke addict finance bro in Murray Hill! A divorced couple in Gramercy Park! Dueling designers in the Fashion District! I want it all!!

Last Night in Soho 2021
The first half is the best movie of the year.
The second half is… fine.

Eyes Wide Shut 1999
I have lived in NYC for 2 years and have not been invited to a rad Masquerade party on Long Island. Wack.
But this still rules. Knew nothing about it coming in and I am so glad I came in that way. Expected much more melodramatic marital strife and not so much secret society intrigue.
Kubrick directs the hell out of this and I can already tell there’s a ton to unpack.

Little Women 2019
The first thought I had after leaving the theater to see this for the first time was that I had to go again.
And spoiler alert for my top 10 of the year, it’s the highest placing movie I had only seen once before now, so now that they’re on even footing, figuring out how to order my top 4 will keep me awake at night. Worth it tho!
I loved Little Women even more the second time. Gerwig’s screenplay…

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood 2019
Twice Upon a Time... In Hollywood
What I liked the first time I loved in round 2, what I loved I still love. This movie is impeccably crafted and it’s still so fascinating to see Tarantino subvert (most) expectations and eschew his most identifiable traits.
Hollywood just might be the movie he was born to make.
Oh, and Brandi’s the MVP. Such a good girl.
Grade: 9.5/10
P.S. saw it in 35mm this time. Still prefer 70mm but it nevertheless looked awesome. Film grain is my kink I guess.
