The Tyrannosaurus (tye-RAN-uh-SAWR-us), or simply Rex, is one of the dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved.
Basic Info[]
Dossier[]
This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.
Tyrannosaurus dominum
TimeLate Cretaceous
DietCarnivore
TemperamentAggressive
- Wild
Arguably the deadliest creature on the Island, Tyrannosaurus dominum is a killing machine. Active mostly when hunting for food or defending its nest, a good plan is to avoid every Tyrannosaurus. It is pure power -- from its stomp to its tail. It is not able to intimidate every foe with its roar, but upon hearing it, it might scare the poop out of you - quite literally. Despite being a different sub-species of Tyrannosaurus, everyone I've met still refers to them as a "Rex" or a "T-Rex". I've long since stopped trying to convince anyone, especially the few who I've encountered wearing Tyrannosaurus teeth as necklaces.
- Domesticated
Taming a Tyrannosaurus is without a doubt the goal for any warlord or warring tribe. Tyrannosaurus is a fierce battle companion. There is a reason Tyrannosaurus is considered the king of dinosaurs (or in this genus, the "lord"). Any tribe that manages to tame one has almost nothing to fear.
Behavior[]
Tyrannosaurus is highly aggressive and will attack most living creatures in sight aside from other apex predators. They're extremely bulky, having nearly double the Health of Spino of the same level. They also possess surprisingly good Stamina for their size, of which is also greater than that of any same-leveled Spino. What Tyrannosauruses lack in attacking speed (when compared to a Spinosaurus) they make up for in sheer Health. Tyrannosaurus generally ignore mounted tamed animals and choose to attack wild animals instead, but will attack tamed mounted animals if they get too close. However if they see a helpless tame or dismounted Human in the open, they will begin to attack.
Appearance[]
Tyrannosaurus is an exceptionally large (and often colorful) two-legged dinosaur found on the island. It comes in a wide range of colors, from brown, to greyish-purple and even dark red. They are covered in small, pebbly scales that are often interrupted with large osteoderms. Their underbelly, however, is smooth and tan with small rectangular scales. Along their neck and back there is a large ridge of large bony scutes that may be used to protect their vertebrae from the jaws of other carnivores (including other T. dominum). They have proportionately long legs that end in three thick, padded toes, each decorated with one large claw. T. dominum regularly exceed seventy feet in length, however, they possess disproportionately small arms. Strangely, these arms are heavily muscled and extremely thick. When tamed and ridden almost no dinos except for creatures such as other Rexes, Spino, Giganotosaurus, Megalodon, Yutyrannus and Therizinosaurus will attack you if you don't attack them first, which makes it easy to travel with the Rex without being hunted by other animals.
Color Scheme and Regions[]
This section displays the Rex's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Rex. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Rex will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.
This information can be used to alter the Rex's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID>
in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6
would color the Rex's "body" magenta.

Tek Rex (Variant)[]
The Tek Rex is a creature that was permanently added to the game with the ARK: ARKaeology event and is part of the Extinction Chronicles I event. It is a unique alternate of the original Rex, and is purely made of Tek. Unlike the original, they spawn at a 5% rate at a 20% higher level than usual.

- Random Special Loot
Breeding[]
One of the more difficult dinos to breed in captivity, due to the difficulty in maintaining proper egg temperatures, and the long period of hand-feeding the infant. At least 2 Air Conditioners and multiple standing torches are recommended to aid in maintaining the egg at the proper temperature. Between monitoring the egg during incubation and hand-feeding the infant, it is an 8-9 hour commitment to get the baby to the stage where it will eat out of a feeding trough.

Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]
The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps
Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

KO Strategy[]
While Rexes are relatively slow, they are incredibly strong; trying to tame a Rex solo on flat ground can be risky. Bring a few friends and shoot Tranq Arrows at it. It will try to flee once torpor gets high but you can easily reach it sprinting.
Common strategies include:
- Build a tower 10 Stone Pillars high with a ceiling on top. Lure the Rex to it while riding a flying mount, then land on your tower and shoot tranquilizers at it.
- Find a Rex that spawned near a cliff. Quite a lot of Rexes spawn in the cove on the southeastern shores, sometimes 4 at a time. Stand on top of the cliff and shoot Tranq Arrows at it - it will usually stand still while trying to reach you. This method makes it relatively easy to tame a Rex solo. You can also aggro the Rex from a distance and steer it to a cliff while riding a fast mount, such as a Raptor.
- If you can't find a cliff, bring a friend with a Tapejara, Pteranodon, Argentavis or Quetzal. One player flies the mount and carries the other player, which then shoots Tranq Arrows at the Rex. Be careful to not let your mount run out of stamina, or the Rex will most likely kill all three of you when you go down!
- Bring one or more tames set to passive. The Rex will usually attack your tame while you can shoot Tranq Arrows at it from a distance.
- Another strategy is to find an area with large amounts of prey animals, and lure the Rex towards it, then, while it is attacking or eating, shoot tranq arrows or darts at it, avoiding its aggro by running towards another prey animal, and repeating the process until the Rex goes down. However, neutral prey, such as Triceratops will continue attacking, which will lower effectiveness, so be prepared to kill the prey as well.
- Lure a rex into a behemoth gate cage and use your friend's flyer (Don't use pteros, if you try and shoot it will shoot them) to start shooting it down and you got yourself a safe spot
- Ride a Raptor oriented for Stamina, speed, and enough carry Weight. A Raptor outruns easily a Rex so run forward, turn to the side, shoot at it, then turn and resume running again. Each pause to shoot will allow the Raptor to regen Stamina while you take the time to line up a good shot. As well using rocks and other terrain features to kite it around help greatly. It will eventually run which is easy to catch on a Raptor.
- Create a simple trap. Four stone foundations 2x2. Surround perimeter with stone doorways two high. Pick a side, build two ramps from the top doorway to the ground. Kite the Rex up the ramp into the box. Stand back and tranq. Be ready to destroy a few doorways once it's tamed. Replace, Rinse, Repeat.
- Create a taming boat that consists of STONE so the rex won't break it and make the area the rex will be out of stone doorways. (ALSO MAKE SURE TO COVER THE WOOD PART OF THE RAFT) This allows you to shoot it with tranqs and it won't get out. Make a ramp that leads into the trap. Once your taming raft is made and ready park it on the shore close to the rex you want to tame, make sure you're faster than the rex, and agro it up the ramp. Into the trap and run through the gaps in the doorways and tranq away! Alternatively, if you wall off the portion of the raft where you stand to drive, you can drive the still-awake rex to your base and tame it in safety there.
- A Cryopod will make the taming boat 100%-ly reuseable.
- Build 3 Stone Gateways and place a Large Bear Trap in the middle. Lead the rex into the bear trap and place a fourth gateway behind it, effectively trapping it. The gateways are not big enough for the Rex to escape or fight back, assuming you’re a safe enough distance shooting at it. After it is knocked out simply remove the gates and tame normally.
- Another way to successfully capture one is to lay out Large Bear Traps. About 10 should do the trick, add more if you are uncertain. Arrange the traps into a triangle shape and then get the Rex's attention by shooting it with the tranq arrows. If you get it ensnared with the trap they wont be able to escape and will keep getting stuck allowing you to knock it out with the arrows.
- If it is near sea or a deep lake, it will never attack you if it can't reach the bottom of the water without diving, so you can fire a crossbow and the rex will not attack you, this can be used to escape if one aggroes on you early-game.
- Or if you have a lot of health, stamina and speed levelled onto your survivor, just ‘safari tame’ and Rex by shooting at it, and running away when it gets too close, and repeating. This is the most resource efficient but also the most risky way of taming a a rex, as there might be other dangerous creatures around waiting to take a bite out of you.

Combat[]
This section describes how to fight against the Rex.
General[]
The Rex is an imposing threat that is not only durable, but also hits rather hard. Their ability to traverse terrain quite well only helps to cement their position near the top of the food chain only outclassed by the likes of the Giganotosaurus or the Guardians. While they are definitely the larger of the dangers in the environment, they are not necessarily the fastest and definitely not the smartest. Using one's wits and finesse will help to avoid the wrath of this iconic dinosaur.
Strategy[]
Player base sprint speed is faster than that of a wild Rex. It is possible to kite the Rex and do damage with ranged weaponry. If you get attacked by a Rex, try to find large rocks to get it stuck, or if you have a flyer nearby, get on that and get above a cliff, and shoot it from the cliff.
Another effective strategy can be shooting it with a Chain Bola fired preferably from a Ballista Turret on a platform saddle, then shoot it with a Longneck Rifle; use bullets if you want to kill it, or Tranquilizer Dart or Shocking Tranquilizer Dart if you want to tame it.
With higher health and armor, a powerful sword or shotgun can easily take down almost any level of Rex.
Weaponry[]
Make sure that you have at least a Crossbow or Longneck Rifle. Fabricated weapons such as the Assault Rifle or the Rocket Launcher work best, but would be a waste of resources that would be better for raiding, or defense. Strong dinosaurs can also suffice as effective weaponry to down a Rex.
Dangers[]
Tyrannosaurus has a balanced amount of the primary stats, i.e. damage and health. The Rex is not to be trifled with, especially in the early game. If a player has low stamina (or is low level), the player could run out of stamina and the Rex could easily catch up. Getting it stuck between trees is useless, as it destroys trees as it walks. They can effectively kill a low-level player in only a few bites and reduce thatch structures to nothing in seconds. Even players in flak armor aren't very safe from a continuous Rex assault.
Weakness[]
When it comes to raw power, Rexes have few weaknesses as they can easily overpower lesser creatures and get over terrain surprisingly well. However, Rexes are not very intelligent (like most other creatures) and tend to aggro to the closest thing in the area aside from other apex predators, so running into a group of Dodos, Parasaurs, or Trikes can give you time to escape. If you need to escape from a wild Rex and other herbivores aren't around, base player sprint speed is higher than that of a wild Rex, so you can outrun one on foot. However, small obstacles in your path can allow it to catch up, as the Rex could easily walk over something a player would have to go around. By doing this, you can also run into a pack of Raptors, Carnos, and other creatures that can kill you, so be aware of them!
If you can overpower a Rex, it has no additional utilities to effectively defend itself, unlike a Yutyrannus or Spino for example. This can make the Rex an easy and bountiful target.
Utility[]
Roles[]
- Tank: Possessing a huge health pool, the Rex also inflicts greater damage and moves much faster when compared to bulkier tanks such as the Brontosaurus. (Level up Health and Melee Damage)
- Hunter: One of the best creatures in the game (wyverns remains better) at harvesting meat and other resources from carcasses, the Rex has little to fear in the wilds. (Level up Melee Damage and Health)
- Damage: While still nowhere near that of Giganotosaurus, Rex's damage output is incredibly high, and its durability is also useful for long skirmishes. (Level up Melee Damage and Health)
- Transport: Decent speed, effective traversing over rough terrain, and good carry weight make Rexes decent for transporting goods. Although they do not get any weight reductions on resources, very few are dumb enough to challenge the raw power of a Rex convoy. (Level up Weight, Movement Speed, and Stamina)
- Intimidation Tame: With its high volume of roar and large overpowering appearance, the Tyrannosaurus is by far one of the best ways to ward off anyone who dares attack your mount. Furthermore with its roar ability to cause lower-leveled wild/non-allied dino/survivors to defecate makes it, even more, intimidating with the only creatures being more intimidating are the Yutyrannus, Spino, and the Giganotosaurus.
- Raid Boss Tank/DPS: Rexes are among the best creature to use for battles against the bosses such as the Broodmother Lysrix and the Megapithecus. Their massive health pool and high damage can allow a horde of them to hold aggro on a boss for a very long time. Coupled with a Yutyrannus providing a courageous roar and a few Daeodon providing healing, they can take down a boss without requiring guns and ammunition...but you should bring those with you, just in case. (Level mostly Health and some Melee Damage.) Overall, Rexes are compatible with the numerous creatures that can be brought to boss fights to devise creative strategies to bring the guardians down.
- Travel:
- Boss Killer:' because of it's size, strength and abilities Rex is an excellent choice for boss battles many survivors love to use against bosses. Because of how powerful it is the Rex can deal a good bit of damage against the bosses.

Notes[]
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Rex, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
- Its full name, Tyrannosaurus dominum, translates to "Lord of the Tyrant Lizards".
- To call it a T. rex would be scientifically incorrect, considering Tyrannosaurus rex and Tyrannosaurus dominum are two separate species of the same genus. However, the official dossier admits that most people call it by the more popular name.
- Tyrannosaurus dominum is, on average, much larger than any known Tyrannosaurus rex fossils. To put this in perspective, a regular sized human is about as high as T. rex' knee, while the player character barely reaches the ankle of T. dominum.
- T-Dominum and T-Rex are both scientifically incorrect spellings of the two dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus is the genus name, and therefore it's capitalized. dominum and rex are the species' names, and are therefore not capitalized. Because the name Tyrannosaurus is being abbreviated, the correct spelling is T. dominum or T. rex.
- Rexes will often get themselves seriously injured or even killed by attacking too many herbivores at once. Curiously enough, a player-controlled mounted Rex can easily take on many enemies at once, if it manages to keep all enemies in front of it, near its mouth. Unridden Rexes are unable to employ this strategy, causing them to get surrounded and unable to attack.
- As of v260, the Rex requires a Behemoth Gateway; it can no longer fit into a smaller gate. The Yutyrannus replaced the Rex as the largest creature that can fit through any dinosaur gateway.
- Rexes, like other large animals, don't take bonus damage from head shots. Shoot for the body.
- Riders beware: A sprinting Rex damages anything it steps on. This means knocking down trees, instantly crushing the occasional Dodo, and sometimes provoking herd attacks that could actually threaten your mount if you're not ready for it.
- In the Survivor Profile, the devs misspelled Tyrannosaurus, they instead wrote Tyranosaurus.
- " T. dominum"'s meaning is similar to that of Indominus rex from the movie Jurassic World.
- The Rex received a major update for TLC Phase 1 on the 10th February 2018 on PC (consoles on the 23rd) with an appearance overhaul, a new ability to stun lower-leveled wild/non-allied dinos and survivors by forcing them to defecate with a roar, and better climbing of rocks and hills.
- A wild Rex only roars at players and tamed creatures, and its roar has longer cooldowns than a tamed one. It does not roar at smaller wild creatures but immediately attacks them on sight.
- Patch 278.0 removed PaintRegion 3 (former back), but patch 278.2 added PaintRegion 4 as new back, therefore making previously obtained color mutations in those regions inaccessible.
- Tek Rex are among one of the few creatures that has all color regions.
- Keep in mind that Tek Rex doesn't shoot and use Element, it is almost identical to the Rex Bionic Costume.
- Before Yutyrannus released, the Rex could spawn almost anywhere in the snow biome on The Island map.
- In the patch 258 trailer, the Rex used the Giganotosaurus roar.
- The Rex deal 15% additional damage to herbivores, it does have few exceptions, like Kentrosaurus.
- Rexes, Equus, Dodos,Noglins, Megaloceros, and Parasaur are the only Creatures to have two variants of Chibi.
- Due to a bug Rex spawns up to level 500 on Lost Island, even on Official
