Opening : Thursday, Feb 1st 6-8PM
Ethan Cohen Fine Arts is pleased to present the exhibition âChinese Art Stars.â The rising field of Chinese Contemporary art is producing some of the most innovative today. Our exhibition highlights the best artists, creating a coherent exhibition composed of a variety of mediums: sculpture, photography, painting, and lithography.
As the Lunar New Year opens (February 18, 2007), reflection of the past and thoughts toward the future occupy our minds. Sui Jianguo, Huang Yan, Qiu Zhijie, and Zhang Xiaogang open the exhibition with clever and poignant works that seek to reclaim and to visually rewrite 20th Century Chinese visual culture. Works by Bai Yiluo, Wang Guangyi, and Wu Shanzhuan examine the trajectory of Chinaâs future. Wang Guangyi brilliantly colored lithographs starkly criticizes Chinaâs inevitable move to full capitalism; while the younger artist, Bai Yiluo is more hopeful. His photomontage, a series of 12 photographs entitled "Animal Destiny," draws inspiration from Chinaâs billion plus person population and the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Inevitably, all the works speak of Chinaâs future and its great cultural legacy.
