Background[]

Born into the Madrigal family, Mirabel is the youngest daughter of Julieta and Agustín, and the younger sister of Isabela and Luisa. In addition to being the niece of Félix, Pepa, and Bruno, Mirabel is also the cousin of Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. Mirabel shared the nursery with her cousin, Camilo, who is 3 months older than her, until he received his gift on his 5th birthday and subsequently moved out of the nursery.

On the night of 5-year-old Mirabel's gift ceremony, she touched the door handle of her soon-to-be room, excited about what kind of gift she would get. But her door suddenly faded away, and she didn't get a gift like the rest of her family. This left everyone who attended the ceremony shocked, especially Abuela Alma. Ever since that day, Mirabel has been desperately trying to make up for not having a gift by helping out in an attempt to "make her family proud". Alma and Isabela over the years distanced themselves from Mirabel because she did not have a magical gift and the pressures they carried respectively. Being the only child not blessed with a gift, she is constantly left out by most of her family. Despite this, she genuinely loves her family.

Official Description[]

Mirabel is a young girl imperfect and weird and quirky, but also deeply emotional and incredibly empathetic.[1]
Mirabel is a young girl who may be imperfect and "weird", but is also empathetic and emotional. She's determined to prove that she belongs, denying to everyone, including herself, that she feels all alone even in her own house.[2]

Development[]

How with the rest of the Madrigal family, Mirabel was designed to reflect "family archetypes that are immediately relatable".[3] As in the final production, the studio created Mirabel without a magical gift but at the same time empathetic and someone who is always there to help her family. Since the beginning, the idea was for Mirabel to have embroidery in her costume. Despite some of its imperfections, the designs on their clothing were meant to resemble something that would look similar in a teenager's art book or drawings in a diary.[4]

Mirabel's voice actress, Stephanie Beatriz, described her character: "Mirabel doesn't have a gift, which I find extremely relatable, because there have been many times in my life where I felt like I didn't belong, I didn't measure up, I wasn't talented enough to be there, I had that sort of imposter syndrome. But I also discovered by getting older, and working more and more on trusting myself, that I do have something to offer, and it is special, and I am myself. So, you know, not everybody's gonna love that but the people that do, are gonna love it really hard."[5]

Mirabel often shows a free-spirited and optimistic demeanor; despite being the only Madrigal grandchild without a gift and an outcast by her family, she is still very much sociable and friendly to those around her. Lacking a gift of her own, she admires her relatives and hold them in high regard. Her lack of gift also does not hinder her from getting along with most of her relatives: having a very close bond with her cousin Antonio, comforting him when he needs it. At the same time, he admires her and sees her more as a sister than his cousin. She also is humble and honest, admitting easily that she and her father are both accident-prone. On top of this, Mirabel appears confident as she claims that she does not need a gift to make herself happy and that she is just as special as everyone else in her family.

Despite seemingly living life happily without any power of her own, Mirabel is very much insecure over the fact that she cannot contribute the same way her relatives do. The worst part of not having a gift is being looked down by Abuela Alma and viewed as a nobody in her own family. As she cannot relate with her gifted relatives, she is lonely and feels disconnected from them. Ultimately, her greatest wish is nothing more than to be fully included in the family, even if she doesn't have a gift. In her pursuit to find answers behind the magic's weakening, she is shown to be very persistent as she continually followed Luisa while she was running her errands and pestered her until her sister confesses her problems. She also insisted that Bruno conjure another vision of the future, despite him being uncomfortable with the idea of it. Later on, Mirabel persisted on reconciling with Isabela by embracing her, and while Isabela is singing about her self-expression and freedom, Mirabel attempts to rush the reconciliation process, but stopped and she eventually helps her sister embrace her true self and they both shared a genuine hug.

While searching for answers on why the magic is dying, Mirabel discovers how much stress each of her family members are under as a result of the expectations set upon their gifts and themselves, which they hide behind effortless façades. She helps to give voice to her family's problems through her compassion and helps them understand that they are valuable as they are, not because of their gifts. This allows Mirabel to relate to her family members in ways she could not previously do, thus allowing her to form stronger bonds with them. Mirabel was visibly worried after Luisa reveals her insecurities and the pressure that she was under to meet their family's expectations of her, hugging Luisa to comfort her and telling her that she thinks she carries "way too much". She shows her concern several times for her sister when Luisa is in a state of depression over losing her gift. When the family comes together to rebuild the Casa Madrigal, Mirabel reassures her family that they are more than just their gift. She also showed compassion to her uncle Bruno upon learning his sad upbringing and assured him his visions don't make him a bad man.

Mirabel, fed up with Alma's treatment of her and the family, confronts her.

While Mirabel greatly respects Abuela as both the founder of the magic and the matriarch of the Madrigal family, she is unhappy with the fact that Abuela mistreats her for not being blessed with a gift and frequently disallowing her from participating in familial activities. After learning the source of the miracle dying and trying to tell Abuela how to fix it, Abuela was quick to lash out at Mirabel for "hurting the family" because she didn't get a gift, which greatly hurts Mirabel. Finally fed up with this treatment, Mirabel stands up to Alma and defends her family by saying that she had always seen her as a disappointment and that no one would ever be good enough for her or her expectations, even with their magical gifts and how Bruno really left because she always saw the worst in him, accusing her grandmother of not caring about them. After the destruction of Casita, Mirabel and Abuela have a heart-to-heart conversation away from the family. Though Abuela admits that she had lost sight of what was truly important in her life: her family, and not the gifts they possess; Mirabel, after learning of Abuela's trauma, maturely understood her actions better. Mirabel saw how broken her grandmother was, and forgave Abuela while lifting her spirits by reminding her how she was strong in leading their community and raising her children despite the tragedy she endured. The two then reconciled and mended their relationship. Now, Mirabel is genuinely more confident in her worth, finally seen as an equal in her family and community.

Physical appearance[]

Mirabel is a 15-year-old Colombian girl of a 5'2" height,[6] with hazel eyes, chin-length voluminous type 3 curly black hair with midnight brown reflections, brownish-black thick eyebrows, and a visibly dark shade of freckles on her nose and cheeks. Of her sisters, Mirabel is the one who most resembles her mother Julieta. Mirabel is near-sighted[7], so she wears lime green and gold round-framed glasses. She wears blue pom-pom earrings, and carries around a mochila bag when going out. Her attire is a traditional Andean-styled white blouse that has colorful butterfly stitching, with frills of black trimming at the neck and sleeves. She wears a ankle-length Colombian skirt that's 3 shades of teal with colorful butterfly embroidery and her name stitched on the waistband, with an indigo petticoat and white bloomers, and hot pink espadrilles with stitched linking and black ribbons around her ankles. Mirabel's skirt has many embroidered patterns, like butterflies, flowers, a little version of herself and even some motifs representing her relatives, like a candle (Alma), a basket of buñuelos (Julieta), a chameleon (Camilo), musical notes (Dolores), and others. At night, she wears a white ankle-length nightgown with a green ribbon at the neckline.

As a 5-year-old child, Mirabel still had her signature green glasses and looked very similar to her teenage self, with the same hairstyle and small face. On the night of her gift ceremony, Mirabel wore a white party dress that had golden butterflies embroidered on it and lace ruffles at the sleeves, and a light pink bow pin placed near the top and slightly to the left side of her head. She also wore white and gold flats that matched her dress.

Powers and Abilities[]

Although Mirabel doesn't possess any particular gift, she does have a strong affinity with the Casa Madrigal like Abuela Alma; she communicates with the Casita like it is a real person, and the house responds to her prompts and helps with her daily routine. Mirabel is skilled in sewing, having embroidered her own clothes and made a stuffed jaguar for her cousin, Antonio. She is also nimble and quick on her feet, displaying skills similar to parkour to navigate through difficult areas like the roof and walls behind the house. After the Casa Madrigal is rebuilt, Mirabel added a doorknob the family made for her to the front door, which restored the magic to the Encanto. This new miracle is born from Mirabel's love for her family and to reflect this, the color of the magic is different from what it was previously, going from gold to the color of the rainbow.

Mirabel first appears as a five-year-old girl listening to her grandmother, Alma tell the story of how their family was blessed with magic and how the Miracle Candle will grant her a magical gift during her birthday. When it is time for her ceremony, Mirabel asks Abuela what she thinks her gift will be, to which her grandmother responds that she is a wonder and whatever gift she gets will be just as special as her. In the present, Mirabel is seen helping prepare for her cousin Antonio's gift ceremony. In "The Family Madrigal", the Town Kids ask Mirabel what her gift is, but she tries to deflect by explaining her other family member's gifts. Dolores overhears this and explains to the kids that Mirabel didn't get a gift. Mirabel reassures the children that she is just as special as the rest of her family, whether she has a gift or not. She proceeds to help her family with preparations, but Pepa begins to panic about Antonio's gift ceremony, causing her to unintentionally create a mini hurricane that damages the flowers. Isabela arrives to calm her aunt down, swinging dramatically down from the upper level of the house on a vine. The townspeople look on in admiration, applauding as Mirabel gives Isabela a look of annoyance. Isabela gives Pepa a bouquet of flowers with a smile, helping her aunt calm down. As they left, Isabela "accidentally" flips her hair in Mirabel's face, causing flowers to splatter onto her face and rolls her eyes, telling her sister she should stop trying so hard to be helpful. Mirabel tries to explain that she is just trying to help, but Isabela walks away, rolling her eyes once more as Mirabel walks into a pole, having not looked where she was going.

When Mirabel returns home with the party supplies given to her by Osvaldo, Julieta tells her that she doesn't need to overdo it. Mirabel insists that she was simply doing her part like the rest of the family, but, Agustín concurs with Julieta, mentioning that Antonio's upcoming gift ceremony will be the first one since Mirabel’s. Agustín then shares with Mirabel that when he and Félix joined the family through marriage, they felt like outsiders who would never receive a gift, always in the shadow of more accomplished family members. He empathizes with Mirabel's potential feelings of inadequacy, but she politely declines his offer. Both Agustín and Julieta reassure her that she has nothing to prove, and Mirabel responds with a thumbs up. After decorating the outside of the rooms in the house with lights, Mirabel sadly looks at the family portraits of those who have received their magical gifts, knowing she is the only one without a gift. Suddenly, Alma appears and startles Mirabel, causing her to accidentally set the decorations on fire. As Mirabel frantically tries to put out the flames, Alma suggests that maybe she should let someone else handle the decorations. Mirabel tells her that she made the decorations as a surprise, but Alma "kindly" advises her to step aside and allow other family members with magical gifts to take charge. Alma explains the importance of utilizing everyone's magical abilities without diminishing their talents. Mirabel feels frustrated and insignificant after hearing this, but she reluctantly agrees and heads to the nursery room with a heavy heart. Before that, she overhears her mother asking Alma to be considerate of Mirabel, as tonight will bring back painful memories for her since her ceremony failed. However, Alma seems more focused on the success of the gift ceremony for the family as a whole, rather than considering how it might affect Mirabel emotionally. This leaves Mirabel feeling like she is letting her family down.

In the nursery, Mirabel finds Antonio hiding under the bed because he is afraid his gift ceremony will fail, like hers did. Understanding his worry about disappointing the family, Mirabel comforts him. She promises that he will receive a special gift and that it will be a great day. She also tells him she will stay with him in the nursery if he does not succeed. When Antonio wishes that Mirabel could have her own door, she looks a little sad but reassures him that she is happy with her family, her home, and having him as a cousin. She says that seeing him happy with his gift will bring her more joy than anything and that she will miss having the “world’s best roomie.” She then surprises him with a stuffed jaguar as a birthday present before Casita interrupts them, reminding them that it is time for the ceremony. During the ceremony, Mirabel hides behind a curtain while her family and the townspeople gather. Alma gives a speech about how the people of the Encanto were blessed during a time of great need with a miracle that gave the Madrigal family their magical gifts. Alma celebrates that it is now Antonio’s turn to receive his gift. She goes up the stairs to wait beside his new magical door. However, Antonio is still nervous to walk to his door alone and asks Mirabel to go with him. At first, she hesitates, knowing Alma and the family might not approve, but she agrees after Antonio whispers that he needs her. Walking Antonio to his door brings back painful memories for Mirabel. As a child, she had tried to receive her own gift, but her door disappeared when she touched the knob, causing panic among the townspeople and her family. She remembers feeling that she had let everyone down. Despite this, Mirabel helps Antonio reach his door. She stands beside Pepa and Félix while Alma and the rest of the family watch. Antonio touches the door and successfully receives his gift: the ability to communicate with animals. He joyfully explores a lush jungle with a large tree, and a jaguar gives him a ride on its back. Although Mirabel is happy for him, she feels left out as Alma declares his gift special and the family takes a picture without her. In "Waiting on a Miracle", Mirabel expresses her insecurities of being the only Madrigal without a gift and her wish to be treated the same as everyone else in her family.

Mirabel learns about Luisa's powers becoming weaker when she saw the cracks.

Mirabel is in the courtyard when a roof tile suddenly falls and breaks on the ground. When she picks it up, she accidentally cuts her hand. The house then begins to shake, the Miracle Candle flickers, and cracks appear throughout the house. Mirabel tries to show Alma and the others, but the cracks disappear and the candle stops flickering. As a result, no one believes her, including Isabela, who reacts as if Mirabel is being overreacting and acting out of jealousy because Antonio received a gift while Mirabel did not. Alma dismisses Mirabel’s concerns and reassures the townspeople that the magic is still strong. The guests then return to the party like everything was fine. Later, Julieta takes Mirabel to the kitchen, where Mirabel explains that she never meant to ruin Antonio’s gift ceremony. However, miscommunications develops as Julieta mentions how difficult Mirabel's failed gift ceremony was, but Mirabel explains she was just looking out for the family. Believing Julieta may not fully understand her due to not receiving a gift herself, Mirabel questions her worth compared to her family, but Julieta quickly reminds her that she is just as special as everyone else and hopes she can see that for herself. As Julieta tends to Mirabel's hand, Mirabel brings up her mother's contradictions, which makes Julieta seem as though she is ignoring her feelings and values. Despite Julieta's attempts to show affection through kisses and compliments, Mirabel remains upset and struggles to believe that her worth does not depend on having a gift. This causes Julieta to worry that Mirabel may follow Bruno's footsteps and disconnect from the family. Julieta suggests that she get some rest, promising that things will be better tomorrow. During the night, Mirabel cannot sleep and thinks about the cracks in the house. She goes to the rooftop near Alma’s window to check the walls. There, she overhears Alma speaking to a picture of her late husband, Pedro. Alma expresses fear that the magic is weakening and that the family may lose their home again, as they did in the past. She prays for help and admits she is afraid. After hearing this, Mirabel decides to take action to save her family and the miracle.

The next morning, she asks "Dolores", who was gifted with super hearing, but "she" remains silent. When it is revealed the be Camilo, having overheard her ask him what's going on, she tells her that Luisa's eye was twitching all night. While confronting her older sister, Luisa in "Surface Pressure", confesses that she felt so much pressure to live up to Abuela Alma's expectations and her fear of breaking down at the prospect of failing. Mirabel hugs her and says that she carries too much, only for Luisa to return the hug, squeezing Mirabel in the process and reveals to her that her powers became weaker when she saw the cracks. Luisa suggests that Mirabel go to Bruno's old room, recalling that he once had a vision about the family's magic. Mirabel enters to see that it is a giant sand-filled cave and discovers a vision that supposedly shows Mirabel being the cause of the house cracking apart. Upon leaving, Luisa reveals that her strength is fading as Abuela tells Mirabel to stay away from Luisa until she can talk to her and tells her whatever she is doing, she must stop it. When Mirabel asks her family about Bruno, during "We Don't Talk About Bruno" everyone tells her not to mention Bruno because his gift caused so many problems. When Agustín sees the vision, he tells her to keep it a secret from everyone, but unfortunately, Dolores overhears this conversation and couldn't keep it a secret, much to Mirabel and her father's dread. When she blurts it during the dinner and proposal to Isabela from Mariano, both were ruined and most of the family blames Mirabel, despite her trying to convince them that she had nothing to do with the incident.

Mirabel noticed some rats carrying small pieces of one of Bruno's visions. While following them, she discovered a hidden passage concealed behind a painting on the wall. Inside the passage, she encountered a cloaked figure and tried to chase him, nearly falling through the floor. The figure stopped her from falling, revealing that the hole was not very deep. At that moment, she realized that the figure was Bruno. Initially, Mirabel found Bruno's behavior unusual. He frequently knocked on wood, stumbled, muttered to himself, and even threw salt and sugar at her from behind. He also spoke about two different personas, "Hernando," who was brave and fearless, and "Jorge," who had been working with spackle. Bruno then lets Mirabel see the room where he has been spending his time alone. He has been keeping himself busy by patching cracks in the walls and befriending rats for company. Mirabel says she doesn’t understand why he left, or rather, why he seemed to disappear but never really left. Bruno explains that the mountains are very tall, which made it easy to hide, and that he also has free food thanks to the rats. While exploring the area, Mirabel noticed a table next to the kitchen and dining space that had a drawing of a plate on it. Bruno had likely been watching her family during meals from this spot. Seeing her reaction, Bruno confessed that he had not believed his gift was helping the family, but he still loved them, even though he did not know how to show it. Recognizing Bruno’s feelings of being outcast, Mirabel opens up about her own insecurities, admitting that she wants to make her family proud at least once. She also questions whether her efforts might actually be hurting them and asks Bruno to be honest with her. Bruno, however, cannot give her a clear answer because he is uncertain himself. However, he explained that the vision Mirabel had found was one he had received on the night she did not get her gift. Alma had asked him to look into the future, and he saw the family’s magic in danger, the house potentially crumbling, and Mirabel herself. The vision showed two possible outcomes, one positive and one negative, suggesting that the future was still undecided. Bruno admitted that he did not fully understand the meaning of the vision but knew how others would react. Because he had been villainized by the family, people would likely assume the worst. To protect Mirabel from being ostracized like he had been, Bruno shattered the vision and withdrew from the family. Now carrying the heavy responsibility of knowing that the fate of the family miracle might depend on her, Mirabel encourages Bruno to create a new prediction; one that would not cause any harm to the family. At first, Bruno is hesitant and uncomfortable because Mirabel had previously damaged his vision cave, leaving him without a proper space to work. Fortunately, Antonio arrives and offers the use of his room, having been informed by the rats of Bruno’s need. Mirabel explains that the family needs help and urges him to leave his room, which he reluctantly agrees to do.

While they are in Antonio’s room, part of the house begins to crumble. This causes Mirabel to worry that the house might collapse and she suggests that they should hurry. Bruno, however, reminds her that the future cannot be rushed. Once they set up the ritual circle, Bruno warns Mirabel that she might not like what she sees in his vision. He also expresses fear that she might blame him for causing the future. Mirabel reassures him, saying that she does not believe he caused the future and points out that sometimes “family weirdos” just get a “bad rap.” Bruno begins the vision, but at first, it unfolds the same way it had before. He wants to stop, but Mirabel insists that they continue. During the vision, Mirabel notices a golden butterfly and points it out. She and Bruno follow the butterfly, which leads them to a vision of the candle glowing brighter and Mirabel hugging a partially obscured figure. As the image clears, it is revealed to be Isabela, and the vision ends. This angers and annoys Mirabel. Mirabel expressed her annoyance and questioned how hugging Isabela could save the family’s magic, even bringing up the fact that she had ruined Isabela’s proposal. Despite this, Bruno encouraged her to focus, explaining that the vision was not about Isabela, but about Mirabel herself being the person the family needed. Mirabel doubted this, lowering her eyes, but Bruno retreated into the walls, inviting her to visit him after she had saved the miracle. In turn, Mirabel promised that once the miracle was saved, she would bring him home. Upon entering Isabela's room, Mirabel tells Isabela that she knows they have had their issues, but she wants to be a better sister and suggests they hug to make up. However, Isabela blocks her with her vines and tells her to leave. She insists that everything went perfectly for her proposal, that their Abuela was pleased, and that the rest of the family was happy. She also tells Mirabel that if she truly wants to be a better sister, she should apologize for "ruining" her life. When Mirabel responds sarcastically, Isabela uses her vines to drag Mirabel out of the room. As Mirabel struggles to free herself, she insists that she is sorry and that she never intended to ruin Isabela’s life, and she points out that there are more important problems to worry about. Isabela reacts with shock when Mirabel calls her a “selfish entitled princess,” arguing that she has been forced to be perfect all her life, while Mirabel has only made things more difficult. Mirabel tries to reassure her, saying that not everything is ruined and that she can still marry Mariano. In response, Isabela reveals that she never truly wanted to marry him and was only doing it for the family’s sake, which causes a small cactus to grow. After this "serious" confession, Mirabel tries to hug Isabela but notices that Isabela is concerned about how she could grow such an "imperfect" plant. This moment helps Isabela realize that she does not have to be perfect and that her gift can create more than just flowers. She begins to grow a variety of colorful flowers, plants, trees, and even carnivorous plants. During the musical number "What Else Can I Do?", Mirabel empathizes with Isabela and encourages her to embrace her true self. The sisters share a hug in front of a candle, fulfilling Bruno's vision. Afterward, Isabela playfully calls Mirabel a bad influence.

Mirabel angrily points to Alma as the true cause of the miracle dying.

Unfortunately, Alma comes into the house and discovers what's going on as she had been alerted to what happened while apologizing to the Guzmáns for the chaos at the proposal. Mirabel, excitedly attempts to explain the situation and how she has found a solution to save the miracle. However, her joy is short-lived as Alma interrupts her with anger, blaming her for the family's problems and accusing her of causing Bruno's departure, Luisa's powers weakening, and Isabela's behavior spiraling out of control, all because Mirabel was the only one not given a gift. She admits she doesn't understand why Mirabel didn't get a gift, but insists it's no excuse for her actions. Finally fed up with Alma's accusations, Mirabel finally stands up for herself and tells Alma that she will never be good enough, no matter how hard she tries. When Mirabel looks at her sisters, she realizes that no one, even with their gifts, will ever be good enough for Alma and defends Luisa and Isabela by saying they will never be strong enough or perfect enough. As she reaches her breaking point, she brings up how Alma always saw the worst in Bruno, which is why he left the family. Alma argues that Bruno didn't care about the family, but Mirabel fights back by insisting that he does love the family, just like she does. She points out that they all love the family, yet Alma's toxic behavior continues to push them away, disregarding their well-being and demanding more and more. Mirabel even goes as far as accusing Alma of being the reason their home is falling apart and that she is the one causing the miracle to die. This shocks and horrifies Alma, while Mirabel is shocked by her own words too. This argument caused a rift in the mountain range that protects Encanto, causing Casa Madrigal to collapse. Instead of running to safety, Mirabel runs towards the collapsing house to protect the candle. She ends up sacrificing herself to save the candle, but luckily survives the destruction thanks to Casita shielding her with debris. Unfortunately, despite her efforts, the candle melts and goes out, leaving Casita in ruins and the Madrigals powerless. Feeling gaslit once again and guilty for what she had said to Alma, Mirabel believed she was responsible for everything. In shame, she ran away through the mountains of Encanto while her family searched for her.

The next day, Mirabel still hasn't been found by anyone. She was sitting alone by the river where Pedro died, crying and releases stress. Alma eventually finds her and Mirabel tearfully apologizes, explaining that she never meant to hurt the family, she just wanted to break free from the black sheep label that she felt trapped in for so long. Rather than accepting the apology, Alma sat down beside Mirabel and opened up about her own past. She revealed that she had never been able to return to this river because it's where she received a miracle, hoping for a different life and a different version of herself. Alma opens up about the trauma she endured in the past, sharing stories about their life together, when they had children, when they lost Pedro, their home, and their village. She apologizes to Mirabel, reassuring her that it wasn't her fault, but rather her own. Alma confesses that she was so afraid of losing their family's miracle and second chance that she unknowingly put so much emotional trauma on them due to years of suffering and heartache that she never healed from. Finally, Alma accepts responsibility for everything that happened, realizing that it was all her fault and not Mirabel's because of her own paranoia. After understanding Alma better and realizing the weight she had been carrying, Mirabel reassured her. She reminded Alma that she had gone through so much pain and loss alone, and that their family was brought together because of her strength and love. Mirabel assured Alma that they were there to support her now, so she didn't have to shoulder the burden by herself anymore. What was broken could still be fixed, and with her children, grandchildren, and in-laws by her side, Alma could find healing and peace. Alma is moved by Mirabel's words and admits that she asked Pedro for help, only to have him send Mirabel her way. In that moment, Alma understands that Mirabel is the answer to her prayers all this time. The two make amends and embrace, restoring their relationship and bringing Bruno's vision to life, all while butterflies flies around them.

Shortly afterwards, Bruno arrives on horseback to confront Alma, but is utterly surprised to see his mother embracing him instead of yelling at him, apologizing for driving him away because of her own fear. The two ride the horse with a resolute Mirabel as they all go back to the Encanto. Once they arrived at the rubble of their home, Mirabel has a warm reunion with her parents, then she convinces her family, magic or not, that they can rebuild their house if they work together. During "All of You", Alma apologizes to her family for holding on too tight, fearing she would lose them too after losing Pedro, and they all reunite with Bruno. Right after that, the whole town gathers together to help the Madrigals fix their house, as an act of gratitude for everything they have done for them. As everyone works, Mirabel is seen raising a pillar with her sisters, when Luisa said that she cries sometimes. Isabela and Mirabel hugged their sister, saying they cry as well sometimes. Later, Mirabel sees Mariano sad and asks him what's wrong, which in response, says he has much love inside to give. She watches Dolores finally confesses the love she feels for him. Falling in love by her words, Mariano returns his feelings for her, much to Mirabel and Isabela's joy.

Mirabel happy that the magic returned to the Casita.

Mirabel happy that the magic returned to the Casita.

When everyone finally finishes rebuilding the Casa Madrigal, except for the front doorknob, Mirabel is surprised and touched when she discovers that her family handcrafted the doorknob just for her. Antonio leads her to the front door, where she feels overwhelmed with emotion, realizing that her family truly sees and appreciates her bravery, determination, and kindness. Alma asks her the same question she did when Mirabel was five, and as Mirabel sees her reflection in the doorknob, she answers that she sees herself, finally accepts herself for who she truly is—not defined by a magical ability, not by her family’s expectations, but by her own worth. Adding the doorknob to the new door unleashes a new source of magic that revives Casita and restores the gifts of the Madrigals. The new front door features carvings of all the Madrigals, including those who have married into the family, Félix and Agustín. Casita then brings everyone inside, as Mirabel watches as her relatives retrieve their gifts and can use them in ways that make them happy. The Casa Madrigal brings the Madrigals together for a new family photo, when Casita suddenly brings everyone closer, making an imperfect family picture, however everyone is still content.

Once Upon a Studio[]

Mirabel returns alongside her family at the Disney Animation Studio for a group photo with all the characters from the previous films to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the studio and The Walt Disney Company's founding in 1923 by Walter Elias Disney and his brother Roy Oliver Disney.

She joins in on playing the beginning notes of "When You Wish Upon a Star" on her accordion with Alan-A-Dale on his lute, Scat Cat on his trumpet, and Hathi, Jr. on his trunk when all the Disney characters were disappointed at the group photo being ruined. As they played the song, they joined the rest of the characters where they managed to take a perfect group photo.

Other appearances[]

Mirabel was among the Disney animated characters that appeared during the credits of Wish.

Mirabel Madrigal at Disney California Adventure.

Mirabel began appearing as a face character in December of 2021 in a limited capacity at Disney California Adventure and Disney's Animal Kingdom, before the Disneyland Resort meet and greet moved to a more long-term spot at Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante. During winter months, she'll wear a poncho to keep herself warm over her normal clothes. She'll also wear mittens on her hands. Beginning on September 15, 2023, she will do meet-and-greets at Walt Disney World Resort. It will be at the Fairytale Garden near Tomorrowland since Merida moved to Liberty Square for her meet-and-greets, leaving the garden open for another member of the Theme Park Characters to occupy once the Cast Members renovate it for Mirabel.

Mirabel also appears in the 2022 edition of the Main Street Electrical Parade as an It's a Small World doll in the new finale sequence.

Mirabel also appears in the 2022 updated version of Fantasmic at Disney's Hollywood Studios during the Heroes sequence.

Video games[]

Disney Dreamlight Valley[]

Mirabel was released into the game on the February 16th, 2023 update with Olaf from Frozen as part of the game's updates being released during the year celebrating The Walt Disney Company's Centennial Anniversary of its founding by Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney. The Star Path coming with the update will celebrate the company's 100th anniversary.

Mirabel's story begins when the player finds her doorknob lying around the Valley. Showing it to Merlin, he recognizes it as Mirabel's and explains that her house, Mini-Casita, has vanished into another dimension to protect her from The Forgetting. Finding the doorknob means Mini-Casita wants to return, but first the player must prove themselves to it by displaying the Madrigal Family's values, such as bringing the village together to help the community. Mirabel checked on everyone to make sure their needs were fulfilled, and was also fond of photographs. The player decides to take some selfies with the villagers and also bring them some gifts, such as their daily favorite gifts, to prove themselves. Merlin also suggests talking in daily discussions with them as well to help. Once enough of these are met, Merlin then needs the player to gather 500 Dreamlight and bring it to him. Once completed, he proclaims that Mini-Casita is ready to return to the Valley. All the player has to do is find a spot to place Mini-Casita, even if it means doing a little remodeling of the Valley to make room for it, and Mirabel will be safely returned to the Valley, appearing from the Dream Well in front of the Dream Castle like everyone else brought back from their home realms or through other means.

Her first Friendship Quest involves helping out Mini-Casita with bringing her some supplies to mend it with, including softwood, stone, and several flowers to serve as painting materials. After that, she has the player buy some furniture from Scrooge McDuck's store and renovate their own house, or Casita as Mirabel puts it, before bringing her over to see it herself and see the renovations they did, impressing her.

Her second involves a dish she had served up previously, buñuelos, but The Forgetting caused her to forget the recipe, so she asks the player to take a plate of the dish to Remy to help remember the recipe. Thanks to Remy's keen chef's knowledge, the recipe consists of milk, wheat, eggs, and cheese. Once the player cooks some up and returns them to Mirabel with the remembered recipe, she asks them to cook up some more to serve to Mickey, Scrooge, and Goofy, as thanks for staying and tending to the Valley during her and the other characters' absence, and thanks them afterwards.

Her third Friendship Quest regards her having caused some problems between Scrooge and Donald, and she needs help mending their relationship. After speaking to the two duck relatives, and feeding the raccoons in the Forest of Valor, the player finds Scrooge's cash register key that was dropped in the forest. Mirabel then needs a Seashell Frame and Red Fruit Pie made for her to give to Scrooge to apologize for her meddling.

Her final Friendship Quest regards finding a piece of torn cloth in the Mini-Casita. The cloth is a memory that reminds Mirabel of having been good friends with Moana, Anna, and Elsa, and she wants to rekindle that memory. The player tracks down the broken pieces of the Madrigal table and gives them to Anna to mend with some help from Moana. The player cooks up some meals for the Friendship Festival before Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Moana come to see Mirabel after finishing their tasks they were working on. After the player finds a good spot for the table, they join Mirabel and the others in celebrating the Friendship Festival, which Mirabel is very grateful for.

Alongside costumes of Bruno, Luisa, and the Miracle Candle, a purchasable costume of Mirabel was added to Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout in December 2022. Alongside the Mirabel costume, an emote named Mirabel's Moves was added, recreating some of Mirabel's dance from "The Family Madrigal".

Other appearances[]

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade[]

Mirabel made an appearance outside of the Disney Parks on the Disney Wish float "Magic Meets The Sea" in the 2022 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade alongside Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald Duck, Pluto, and several of the Disney Princesses and their princes. Among the Disney Princesses joining her, Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the Fab 5 were Mulan, Raya, Moana, and joined by their princes, Cinderella & Prince Charming, Rapunzel & Flynn, Jasmine & Aladdin, and Tiana & Naveen. Mirabel, alongside the likes of Moana, Cinderella, and Tiana, were wearing their winter attire for the parade due to the cold temperatures in Manhattan on Thanksgiving Day. Near the end of the parade route, as the float approached Herald's Square, Mirabel remained on board with Pluto, Donald, Mulan, Raya, and Marvel heroes Spider-Man and Black Panther, while Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Moana, and the Disney Princesses with their husbands dismounted and walked the rest of the way on foot with their supporting Cast Members, both backup performers and supervisors/adjutants, waving to the crowd as they made the last leg of the procession as the NYPD and FDNY kept watch over everyone. Once at Herald's Square, they performed the Disney Wish show titled "Seas the Adventure", which included snippets of some famous classic Disney songs, like "A Whole New World" and "When You Wish Upon a Star". After the parade was over, and the float was disassembled to be returned to storage at the warehouse in New Jersey in case it will return for the 2023 parade, Mirabel and the other Theme Park Characters, along with their supporting Cast Members that performed with them or were assigned to watch over the characters on their special assignment outside the parks and ships, departed Manhattan and returned to Disneyland in Anaheim and Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista for the parks' holiday festivities until Macy's invites them back to Manhattan for another Thanksgiving Day parade. This may be possible should Macy's CEO and VPs decide to have the float return for the 2023 parade, and if Disney CEO Bob Iger and the Disney VPs agree that Mirabel, Mickey, Minnie, the Princesses, and other characters can return to Manhattan for next year's parade, that will be the third year in a row that Macy's long-standing Thanksgiving tradition gets another pinch of Tinker Bell's pixie dust to truly make it memorable and magical, especially to help celebrate The Walt Disney Company's Centennial Anniversary, Disney 100 in 2023, which is also shared by Hasbro and Warner Brothers celebrating their 100th anniversaries as well.

It has been confirmed that Mirabel would be returning to Manhattan to ride on "Magic Meets The Sea" again for the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, joined by many of her friends from last year and the year before, along with two new faces in Peter Pan and Miguel Rivera.[8] The float is also going to be repainted to represent the newest ship of the Disney Cruise Line fleet set to enter service in 2024, the sister ship of the Disney Wish, the Disney Treasure, with Peter and Miguel major parts of the ship's design. There were two new faces alongside Peter Pan and Miguel in Genie and the Peddler riding on the float with them, Mirabel, Mickey, Minnie, Moana, Tiana, Naveen, Anna, Elsa, Rapunzel, Goofy, Donald, Pluto, Aladdin, Jasmine, Spider-Man, and Black Panther. Mirabel, Tiana, Moana, and Anna were wearing their winter attire again due to the cold weather. As the float proceeded down the parade route, with Ronald McDonald, the NYPD Marching Band, and Chase of the PAW Patrol following behind them, once the float reached Herald Square, the NBC broadcast went to a commercial break just as the float stopped in front of Macy's Flagship Store, giving Mirabel and the other characters some extra time to wave to the crowd as the Cast Members used the time to get everything for the performance of "Let's Set Sail" ready, so when the broadcast returned from commercial break and Al Roker and his co-hosts introduced them, Mirabel and the other characters put on an amazing performance to ensure the parade had been given another dose of Disney Magic for the third year in a row that Disney Cruise Line and The Walt Disney Company participated in the parade, especially for Disney 100 Years of Wonder.

However, during the procession, the float was forced to stop during the trip down Sixth Avenue as the NYPD dealt with some protestors that were trying to obstruct the parade due to the ongoing fighting in the Middle East. While the supporting Cast Members and the supervisor/liaison Cast Members were concerned when they saw what was happening, Mirabel and the other characters focused on keeping morale up among the parade guests until it was clear for the float to proceed again down the rest of the route to Herald's Square, thus upholding Disney's character integrity that the characters maintain at the parks, resorts, and on the ships.

Around October 2024, a month before that year's parade, Disney and Macy's officially confirmed that Disney would be returning to the parade again, but with a new float dubbed "Magic Meets The Seas" to promote the ever-expanding fleet for Disney Cruise Line as the float would now be designed with the entire Disney Cruise Line fleet involved. Mirabel was also confirmed to be among the returning characters to ride on the new float, alongside the Sensational Six in Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto. Other characters returning included Aladdin and Jasmine, Tiana and Naveen, Moana, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Miguel. New this year would be Mirabel's uncle Bruno and Belle. During the parade, due to the rainy weather in Manhattan this year, Mirabel and the other characters and their supporting Cast Members were provided umbrellas by the Macy's staff to stay dry during the journey to Herald's Square. And, of course, Mirabel, Tiana, Belle, and Moana were wearing their winter outfits due to the weather conditions. Once they reached Herald's Square, they performed a rendition of the stage show from the Disney Treasure known as "Live The Adventure". The float led the way for the One Piece balloon of Monkey D. Luffy, leader of the Straw Hat Pirates, and one of the most beloved and famous characters in one of the longest-running anime and manga out of Japan, and the NYPD Marching Band.

Trivia[]

  • Mirabel's birthday is on March 6,[9] in homage of Gabriel García Márquez, whom the Encanto staff drew inspiration from his works on magical realism.[10][11][12]
  • Many people believe Mirabel's full name to be "Mirabel Valentina Rojas Madrigal" according to The Art of Encanto book. However, the storyboarder has confirmed that this is not her full name, and that she was just playing around with potential names for the main character.
    • Valentina means healthy/strong.
    • If her dad's last name really was Rojas her full name would be "wondrous healthy red/wondrous beauty strong red"
  • The reason why Mirabel did not get a magical gift was intentionally left unexplained in the film because the directors felt it was unnecessary since it was not the point of the film, and believed that "she is who she needs to be for a very good reason".[13]
    • Though, it's theorized that the reason she didn't get a gift is because when she touched the candle, she had wiped her hands on her outfit, getting rid of the 'magic' from her hands. An alternate version of this theory involves that the magic from her hands had absorbed into her, implying that she herself is the gift. This theory has been debunked by director Jared Bush.[14]
    • Another theory (arguably the most popular) is that Mirabel will follow in Alma's footsteps as the next matriarch of her family and protector of the magic of the Encanto (thus revealing that each Madrigal will eventually pass down their gift to future generations).
    • In earlier drafts of the film, it would have been revealed at the end that Julieta somehow purposefully prevented Mirabel from getting a gift in order to shield her from the family pressure.[15]
  • Mirabel is the fourth Disney animated protagonist to wear glasses (after Milo Thatch, Chicken Little, and Lewis Robinson), and is also the first female protagonist to do so.
    • Mirabel's glasses are an important part of her design, with production designer Lorelay Bove stating that "one of the film's main themes is perspective — how different points of view can affect a relationship — and having our main character wear glasses was an intentional choice to reinforce that theme."[16]
    • Initially, during the "Vanellope and the Princesses" sequence in Ralph Breaks the Internet, Snow White was to reveal she was actually nearsighted and needed glasses. There was even some merchandise portraying Snow White wearing glasses, but, for some reason, this trait was dropped.
  • The name Mirabel means "wondrous" or "of wondrous beauty".
    • The "Mira" in Mirabel's name comes from the Spanish word mirar, which means "to look". This was an intentional choice for thematic relevance.[17][18]
    • Her name is also a slight scrabble of "miracle".
  • Early in production, the character's name was Mariana.[19] Another early name choice for the character was Beatriz, which is coincidentally the surname of Mirabel's voice actress.[20]
    • Many Latin American viewers believe that Mirabel's name was meant to be Maribel, as Mirabel is not an actual Spanish name and would be a very uncommon name in Colombia.
  • Mirabel is the second human female protagonist from the Disney Animated Canon to debut in 2021, after Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon.
    • This marked the first time in history that two human female protagonists from two different Walt Disney Animation Studios films debuted in the same year.
  • Her voice actress, Stephanie Beatriz, starred in the 2021 Warner Bros. live-action movie adaptation of In the Heights with Lin-Manuel Miranda, where Beatriz played the character of Carla. Conversely, Miranda himself wrote the songs for Encanto with In the Heights (also featuring Miranda's contribution to the film based on the musical) being released the same year as Encanto.
  • Mirabel is the first Disney female protagonist to have a number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. She achieved this after "We Don't Talk About Bruno" peaked at number one on said chart.
  • Mirabel is similar to Miguel Rivera, from the DisneyPixar film Coco:
    • They live in fictional towns in Hispanic countries; Santa Cecilia, Mexico and Encanto, Colombia.
    • They are different from their multigenerational family; Miguel likes music unlike his family and Mirabel is the only child with no magic in her family. The difference is Miguel wanted to do something different from his family, enough that he nearly broke away from them, while Mirabel wanted to be like hers, even though she doesn't have a gift and was slightly broken away from them. Additionally, Miguel's family was from his father's side whilst Mirabel's family was of her mother's.
    • Both wanted to earn their family's approval and acceptance; Miguel wanted to earn his family's support in his dream of becoming a musician and accept his love of music, while Mirabel wanted to earn her family's equity of not having a good gift and be seen as someone special like the rest of them.
    • They were at odds with the family matriarchs, their strict grandmothers who had difficulty accepting their differences. However, Miguel's grandmother Elena and great-great-grandmother Imelda were both more open and affectionate, adamantly wanting him to contribute to the family, while Alma was distant with Mirabel after she was denied a gift and excluded her from familial activities.
    • They bond with an older relative who is similar to them and the black sheep of the family.
    • They run away after their familial issues reach a breaking point for them, but return to resolve and reconcile with their family (in Mirabel's case, her grandmother) after learning more about their beginnings.
    • Both are one of the younger members of their generation; Miguel is the youngest of the older half while Mirabel is the second youngest grandchild and youngest granddaughter.
    • A minor note is they have the same first and last two letters in their names (Miguel & Mirabel).
  • Mirabel sweats when she is nervous. At her gift ceremony, she can be seen wiping the sweat off of her hands (or wiping the candle, as some theories say) just before she touches the doorknob. She is also sweating when she is chasing Bruno in the walls of Casita during the movie's climax, as Bruno says that she's "very sweaty" when he is grabbing her hand to prevent her from falling.
  • According to the novelization of the film:
    • Mirabel was crying in the nursery after her failed ceremony.
    • Alma hasn't hugged Mirabel since her failed gift ceremony.
  • Stephanie Beatriz was pregnant with her daughter Rosaline when she recorded her dialogue and songs and went into labor while recording "Waiting on a Miracle". Following her birth, she apparently instinctively knew the songs by heart at only six months.[21]
  • She and her cousin, Dolores, are the only female members of the family whose names don't end with an "a." Inversely, Mirabel's the youngest of her siblings while Dolores is the oldest of her siblings.
  • Despite being the youngest of her sisters, Stephanie Beatriz (her voice actress) is actually the oldest of the actresses voicing the Madrigal Sisters, being six years older than Diane Guerrero (Isabela's actress) and fourteen years older than Jessica Darrow (Luisa's actress).
  • According to Jared Bush, Mirabel is left-handed and her favorite food is arepas con queso.[22][23]
  • She is allergic to at least one kind of flower, which Isabela used to take advantage of.[24]
