On January 13, 2023, the show has been renewed for a second season as part of Dan Povenmire's new overall deal with Disney Branded Television, along with the revival of Phineas and Ferb.[3]
Even prior to its confirmation, plans for a second season were implied to be in the works during interviews at San Diego Comic-Con, a couple weeks before the first season began airing its first episode; when asked about a possible crossover between Hamster & Gretel, Phineas and Ferb, and Milo Murphy's Law, Dan Povenmire stated while he and the crew had it in the back of their minds, they hadn't quite figured out the story for it yet because for Hamster & Gretel, they already had planned a "big, sweeping story that goes through the second season."[4]
The series features siblings the perky Gretel Grant-Gomez and overprotective older brother, Kevin, and Gretel's pet hamster named Hamster. On their birthdays after Kevin gets his driver's license, the siblings are visited by space aliens whose UFO bestows them superpowers. However, Kevin's powers accidentally go into Hamster instead, and they form the duo of "Hamster & Gretel". Now Kevin must figure out how to work with both Gretel and Hamster to protect their city from mysterious dangers.[1]
This is the only series created by Dan Povenmire to have a more smoother animation style than Phineas and Ferb and Milo Murphy's Law (both of them have classic late-2000s/early-2010s style)
The title of the series and its titular characters is a parody of the fairy tale Hansel & Gretel.
The episode title is also in a similar vein to Phineas and Ferb.
This series features the voice acting debut of Melissa "Meli" Povenmire, Dan Povenmire (who is voice of Heinz Doofenshmirtz)'s daughter and aspiring voice actress.
This is the first Disney Channel series where Alyson Stoner voices the villain.
The APM track "The Lineman" is heard in the official series trailer.
The behaviors of the three main characters are similar to Phineas, Ferb, and Candace:
Gretel is similar to Phineas, given that she's always optimistic, and is uniquely designed from the rest of the cast.
Hamster is similar to Ferb, given both don't talk as often as the protagonist and only speaking for comic relief, and both are constantly sporting neutral facial expressions.
Kevin is similar to Candace, given that he's the older sibling who's often complaining. He also bears a similar resemblance to Jeremy Johnson, and his clothes almost match the Mr. Slushy Dawg uniform worn by Jeremy.
The opening and closing credits use the font Cooper Black, which was introduced in Milo Murphy's Law.
The end credits sequence are the same exact structure as Milo Murphy's Law, using pale-focused freeze-frames of specific moments from each of the featured episodes.
This is the second Disney Channel animated series that originally premiered on a Friday, but would later premiere future episodes on Saturdays. (The first was The Ghost and Molly McGee.)
This, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Hailey's On It!, are the last DTVA animated shows to feature serialized elements and story arcs, due to the announcement on October 2021 that Disney Television Animation would move story-driven shows away from Disney Channel (future story driven shows will be on Disney+ instead) and move onto more episodic-musical shows.
This is overall the 9th series by DTVA to be serialized/story-driven.
However, Big City Greens is partially serialized time-to-time given its story arcs, and Season 3B becomes serialized when the Greens move back to the country.
This is currently the only "Dwampyverse" show that currently does not have any Halloween nor Christmas-themed episodes.
The titular character's names are seen on a street sign in the Phineas and Ferb episode "Summer Block Buster" during the "Summer is Starting Right Now" song.
