Earlier this month I published a long article on the notorious 1994 genocide in Rwanda, explaining that the actual facts may have been very different than what I’d always assumed.

As reported by the Western media, Hutu extremists assassinated the country’s moderate Hutu president by shooting his plane out of the sky and then immediately unleashed a campaign of mass slaughter against Rwanda’s Tutsis, seeking to completely exterminate that 15% minority population. Inflamed by genocidal radio broadcasts, Hutu mobs often armed merely with simple machetes soon killed many hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

That rampage was only halted by the military victory of a rebel Tutsi army led by the heroic Paul Kagame, who then reunified his ethnically-divided country and has very successfully governed it for the last thirty years, becoming the exemplar of a new generation of enlightened African rulers. Meanwhile, the horrified world established an international tribunal to prosecute the Hutu leaders of that African genocide, who had fled the country after their defeat.

ORDER IT NOW

This shocking story was very widely covered in our media at the time, and has been reinforced over the decades by numerous books and articles, even becoming the subject of Hotel Rwanda, a successful, Oscar-nominated Hollywood film. Much of the most important early reporting on the Tutsi genocide and its aftermath came from journalist Philip Gourevitch, whose series of long New Yorker articles later became the basis of his award-winning 1998 bestseller. That famous work was glowingly reviewed in our leading publications, thereby bringing elements of his gripping narrative to the attention of many additional millions of readers, myself included.

Although in previous decades, most major countries had signed anti-genocide conventions, when the minority population of a weak and impoverished African nation suffered exactly that fate, all our international leaders stood by and did nothing. In the aftermath of the Cold War, the leaders of the Clinton Administration had boastfully proclaimed America as the world’s sole superpower, but faced with reports that a genocide was taking place in a small African nation, they looked the other way.

As I explained in my article, during the months and years that followed, many writers and public intellectuals reacted with outrage to these horrific events, and one journalist decided to write a long book on the genocides of the previous hundred years. That work became a huge bestseller, attracting enormous attention and eventually having an important impact on global public policy.

Once the grim facts about the massive scale of the genocide became widely known, elite Western political and media circles felt tremendous shame that their governments had done nothing.

Samantha Power was then in her mid-20s, a naturalized Irish immigrant who had graduated from Yale and was working as an overseas war correspondent. She and many others were outraged that no American officials had resigned in protest over their government’s lack of action over Rwanda, a personal sacrifice that might have provoked enough media attention to pressure the West into taking action, thereby saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Returning to America to attend Harvard law school, that simmering righteous anger—heightened as she realized that lack of timely government action had also occurred in other such situations—inspired her to write a paper on the subject.

ORDER IT NOW

That paper eventually grew into her first book, “A Problem from Hell” running 600 pages and carrying the subtitle “America and the Age of Genocide.” Published in 2002 when Power was just 31, it quickly became an international sensation, glowingly reviewed almost everywhere, a huge bestseller that won her a Pulitzer Prize and launched her career as a leading figure in human rights doctrine, someone who had seemingly shifted American national policy on an important global issue.

Although I’d certainly been aware of her book when it first appeared, I only just recently read it as part of my Rwanda investigation and discovered that it had attracted even more accolades than I’d ever realized. My 2013 paperback edition devoted a full page to listing the awards it won and another page to the many major newspapers and other publications that had named it one of the best books of the year. Seven additional pages contained excerpts from 63 glowing reviews and endorsements by a very long list of prominent intellectual and political figures, a list so extremely long that I noticed the careless editor had accidentally duplicated at least one of those entries. I can’t recall the last time I’d seen a book that had attracted such seemingly near-universal praise.

Although Power’s weighty book dealt with the general problem of genocide, as might be expected her chapter on Rwanda was one of the longest, and she explained:

The Rwandan genocide would prove to be the fastest, most efficient killing spree of the twentieth century. In 100 days, some 800,000 Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus were murdered. The United States did almost nothing to try to stop it.

It’s very rare that a single book changes the world, but Power’s blockbuster achieved that notable distinction, promoting the legal principle of “Responsibility to Protect,” a phrase that became so ubiquitous it was soon abbreviated as “R2P.” A unanimous 2005 vote of the UN General Assembly later endorsed that new international doctrine, which obligated America and other major world powers to protect citizens around the world who were threatened with massacre or genocide at the hands of any government including their own, thereby seeming to authorize militarily intervention. Wikipedia helpfully explains that R2P contained three main pillars, whose lofty contents were somewhat abstract and ambiguous but strongly expressive:

  1. Pillar I: The protection responsibilities of the state – “Each individual state has the responsibility to protect its population from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity”
  2. Pillar II: International assistance and capacity-building – States pledge to assist each other in their protection responsibilities
  3. Pillar III: Timely and decisive collective response – If any state is “manifestly failing” in its protection responsibilities, then states should take collective action to protect the population.

The elevation of R2P completely reshaped international law, overturning almost four centuries of the world’s post-Westphalian diplomatic tradition as well as the Charter of the United Nations, both of which had prohibited intervention in the domestic affairs of another state. Whereas at the Nuremberg Tribunals, aggressive war was condemned as “the supreme crime,” it now might become legally justified if it could be presented as supporting a humanitarian R2P operation. This powerful new principle became an important element of Western statecraft, used to justify our military interventions in Libya, Syria, and other countries, operations that led to the successful or attempted toppling of various world leaders.

However, to our considerable chagrin, other countries have sometimes drawn upon that same legal framework, with Russia partly justifying its “special military operation” in Ukraine by claiming it was acting to protect the lives of the threatened ethnic Russian citizens of the Donbass. Meanwhile, we and our NATO allies have harshly condemned the Russian action as a grossly illegal invasion of a sovereign nation. So what appears like a humanitarian military intervention to some observers seems more like an illegal foreign invasion to others.

The tendency of the West to be extremely selective in its application of that supposedly universal principle has become glaringly obvious in the ongoing Israel/Gaza conflict. Tens of thousands of Gazans have already died at Israel’s hands in the greatest televised massacre of helpless civilians in the history of the world. Many Israeli leaders have used explicitly genocidal language in describing their plans for the Palestinians, with their statements compiled in South Africa’s 91 page legal brief to the International Court of Justice, whose jurists then issued a series of near-unanimous rulings that the Palestinians were at great risk of suffering a “genocide” at Israel’s hands. In January, Princeton’s Richard Falk, an eminent international human rights scholar long associated with the United Nations, described the horrific events in Gaza as “the Most Transparent Genocide in Human History.”

For twenty years Western leaders have regularly issued idealistic R2P proclamations, but neither America nor any of its allies regarded themselves as having any “responsibility to protect” the dying Palestinians. Instead, our military role has actually been entirely on the other side, providing the massive shipments of American munitions to Israel that have allowed that country to maintain its devastating attacks. It is also clear that if any other regional power such as Turkey or Iran were to begin fulfilling its R2P commitments by intervening on behalf of the Gazans, America and its media would surely denounce that action as an unprovoked act of aggression and retaliate militarily. Indeed, when the Houthi forces of Yemen began counter-blockading Israeli-connected shipping in the Red Sea in hopes of pressuring Israel into allowing food supplies into Gaza, America declared this an act of terrorism and bombarded the Houthis with bombs and missiles.

So the international R2P legacy of the Rwanda Genocide has been an extremely skewed and selective one. But I’ve gradually discovered that the historical roots of the R2P doctrine were equally dishonest.

Until very recently, I’d never read the books by Gourevitch, Power, or any others on the story of Rwanda, but the basic facts of that genocide had always seemed absolutely certain to me. These had been uniformly presented in all of my media outlets, and I regarded the story as solidly established a historical event as anything could possibly be.

Therefore, I was quite surprised several years ago when an unfamiliar Canadian writer named Antony Black suggested that I republish several of his articles, and one of those claimed that the true facts of the Rwanda killings had been the polar opposite of what I’d always been led to believe. According to his account, originally published in 2014, enormous bloodshed had indeed occurred, but the overwhelming majority of the victims had been Rwanda’s Hutus, with perhaps a million or more of them massacred by Kagame’s Tutsi rebel army, which had successfully conquered the country after assassinating its Hutu president.

The essay seemed very solidly written and his several other articles were mostly reasonable and convincing, so I gladly featured his provocative contrarian analysis as a perfect fulfillment of the mission statement of our alternative media webzine. But although it certainly raised questions and doubts in my mind, I still found it quite difficult to believe that this one article might be true and all the previous hundreds or thousands of media stories on Rwanda that I’d absorbed over the previous three decades almost entirely false. So my long-held understanding of the Rwanda story had been shaken but hardly overturned.

ORDER IT NOW

However, that completely changed a few weeks ago when I discovered a 2014 book on the same subject written by Prof. Edward Herman of the University of Pennsylvania and journalist David Peterson. As a longtime friend and colleague of Noam Chomsky, Herman had a strong reputation as a distinguished and fearless leftist critic of government policies, and the conclusions in his short book entirely matched those in Black’s account of events. But the former work was also heavily documented with more than 250 footnotes and strongly endorsed by several prominent journalists and researchers, including authors of two other books on the Rwandan tragedy.

Virtually all our mainstream media sources agreed with Gourevitch and Power that Kagame had been the shining hero of the story, but Herman and Peterson instead portrayed him as the darkest of villains, a leader whose political ambitions led him to overturn the Rwandan peace agreement by assassinating the country’s president, then immediately launching a genocidal war of conquest in which as many as two million Hutus had been slaughtered. Another 1.5 million Hutus fled across the border to neighboring Congo, and Kagame later began an invasion of that resource-rich neighbor, starting wars that according to Wikipedia ultimately cost well over five million civilian lives. For thirty years, virtually all mainstream media outlets had followed Gourevitch, Power, and others in presenting Kagame as Rwanda’s great international hero, but Herman and Peterson painted a very different picture, describing him as “quite possibly the greatest mass murderer alive today.”

I decided to balance this contrarian account by also carefully reading the books by Gourevitch and Power, but still found the totally contrasting analysis of Herman and Peterson much more persuasive. The Wikipedia article on the Rwandan genocide runs 21,000 words, but I noticed that it contained absolutely no mention of their latter book, once again demonstrating how unreliable that establishmentarian information source tends to be on any controversial subject.

Thus I was faced with two diametrically opposed historical narratives. According to the award-winning books by Gourevitch and Power, backed by nearly 100% of three decades of mainstream media coverage, the Rwandan genocide had involved the massacre of Tutsis by Hutus, with Kagame its great hero; but according to Herman, Peterson, and a few others, the Tutsis had instead massacred the Hutus, with Kagame being the leading villain of the story. Although I couldn’t be entirely sure who was correct, I leaned towards the latter position, shocked at how the dispute had been entirely concealed from me, and I closed my article on that note.

Many or most of my readers seemed just as shocked as I had been that the very widely reported “Tutsi Genocide of 1994” may have actually been a hoax and the exact opposite of the truth, and one of them came upon some very telling additional material.

The year 2014 marked the twentieth anniversary of the killings, and Herman, Peterson, and Black were not the only individuals interested in reexamining the facts. That same year the BBC produced and broadcast an hour long documentary investigation of the Rwanda genocide that came to almost exactly the same conclusions as those authors. Some of Kagame’s former top military commanders were interviewed on camera, revealing that he had been responsible for the assassination of Rwanda’s Hutu president, and then used that crime to provide cover for his renewed invasion of the country and the massacre of its Hutu population. There were also interviews with American academics whose careful quantitative field work contradicted the widely-held narrative of events and instead confirmed that the overwhelming majority of the victims had been Hutu civilians, who died at the hands of Kagame’s Tutsi forces, with interviews of some Hutu survivors. In subsequent years, Kagame had solidified his control through a reign of terror, and any Rwandans who challenged his official account faced imprisonment or death as “Genocide Deniers.” His regime even made efforts to track down and assassinate defectors or political dissidents who had fled the country.

Taken together with all the other evidence I’d already digested, I regarded the 2014 BBC documentary as absolutely compelling, and I would urge all those interested in what might be reasonably called Rwanda’s “Tutsi Genocide Hoax” to watch it and decide for themselves.

Although I found the facts and interviews presented in the BBC documentary important and persuasive, even more shocking to me was that it had received virtually no coverage in the rest of the Western media in the decade since it had been released, leaving me completely unaware of its existence. For generations, the BBC has been regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious and reputable mainstream sources of news information, yet none of our other media outlets had taken any notice of a major documentary that completely overturned the existing Rwanda narrative.

Perhaps after decades of promoting the official story of a Tutsi genocide, editors were very reluctant to admit that they’d gotten their facts entirely backward. That would obviously be even more true of someone like Samantha Power, who had parlayed her book into a highly successful political career, serving as American Ambassador to the UN under Obama, and marrying Cass Sunstein, another influential Obama Administration official in 2008; most recently, she has become director of USAID in the Biden Administration. How could Power or those journalists under her influence possibly admit that they’d long promoted a story that was the exact opposite of the truth, apparently spending two decades praising the genocidal killers and denouncing the miserable victims?

Although I frequently consult Wikipedia as a very useful source of information, I certainly recognize that its contents are under the tight control of Intelligence agencies, PR firms, and activist groups, so it must be treated with extreme caution on any controversial topic. But this strict regime of dishonest censorship can sometimes be used to provide an important indicator of the truth.

Consider that long and explosive BBC documentary. No mention of it appears anywhere in the extremely long Wikipedia article on the Rwanda killings, nor even in the separate Wikipedia article devoted to all the films and documentaries on those events, which contains some 37 entries. Most of those latter productions are by obscure film-makers, none of whom have a sliver of the BBC‘s mainstream credibility, while the several BBC Panorama shows had appeared soon after the massacres, long before any of the true facts had gradually come to light from the work of academic researchers and the legal proceedings of the war-crimes tribunal. So by any reasonable standard, that 2014 BBC expose appears by far the most credible production devoted to the topic, yet it was completely omitted by the Wikipedia editors, even from the page listing all the various Rwanda documentaries.

I think this evidence from silence—“the dog that didn’t bark”—demonstrates that those organizations controlling the Wikipedia pages on the Rwanda genocide fully recognized the BBC documentary’s massive potential importance and believed that they needed to suppress its explosive contents. Indeed, from what I’ve been told, the report was only broadcast once on BBC2 and if not for the copy made available on the Vimeo video platform, it might have completely vanished without a trace. This is hardly surprising since it portrayed former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as a willing dupe of Rwanda’s Tutsi ruler, an African dictator responsible for many millions of civilian deaths. Similarly, the important Herman/Peterson book was also carefully excluded from the very long Wikipedia page on the Rwanda genocide.

Herman and Peterson emphasized that one of their important sources was Canadian attorney Christopher Black, who had defended a number of the Hutu leaders at the war crimes tribunal, and I discovered that he himself had published a long 2014 article presenting his side of events, while also providing that material to his brother Antony, whose article had first brought the issue to my attention.

Much of Christopher Black’s account was eye-opening, and if even just a fraction of his accusations can be credited, the legal proceedings were a complete kangeroo court. Every sort of improper pressure was exerted upon both the defendants and their attorneys in order to secure convictions against the accused Hutu leaders, with Herman and Peterson saying the same things.

Over the years, I’d produced my long American Pravda series, calling into question many other major historical events. But for nearly three decades, I’d never once doubted the official narrative of the Rwandan genocide, which I’d always regarded as solidly established as anything in modern world history. So if I now concluded that it was very likely false and indeed the opposite of the actual reality, there were important implications worth pursuing.

ORDER IT NOW

If Herman and Peterson had been right about Rwanda while almost everything else I’d read in the media for thirty years had been wrong, their credibility on related matters was dramatically raised. I soon discovered that a few years earlier they’d published a short 2010 book entitled The Politics of Genocide on that broader topic, including a chapter on Rwanda but also covering many other examples, and I decided to read it as well.

The authors squarely took aim at the entire historical and ideological framework successfully erected by Power and her allies, and indeed her book was the first one they briefly critiqued, focusing less upon its errors than upon its striking omissions.

They noted that across more than 600 pages, Power devoted only a single sentence to the case of American-backed Indonesia, which had killed 100,000 to 200,000 East Timorese during its brutal occupation of their island. Even more remarkably, she totally ignored the massive slaughter of Indonesia’s own ethnic Chinese population during the mid-1960s. That ethnic bloodbath had killed as many as two or three million civilians, being so extreme that a top secret CIA report at the time stated that the massacres “rank as one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century.” I’d noticed the same striking omission when I’d read Power’s book, shocked that such a hefty volume devoted to mass ethnic killings of the the last century could have completely ignored one of the most worst such examples of that period.

The obvious reason for her telling exclusion was that the American government at the time supported or even encouraged that enormous Indonesian Cold War massacre, and highlighting such a story would have been uncomfortable for most of her American audience, let alone the editors, publishers, and reviewers that a young, first-time author such as Power needed to keep on her side. The late 1990s represented the arrogant, self-satisfied peak of America’s post-Cold War triumph, and dredging up unfortunate events from three decades earlier might have diminished any pride in our own moral rectitude as citizens of the “indispensable nation.”

Similarly, the wars and massacres in Congo unleashed by Kagame led to the deaths of more than five million civilians. But his regime was strongly backed by America and he was one of Power’s shining heroes so the word “Congo” was entirely absent from her index.

By contrast, Power devoted three full chapters—nearly one-third of her book—to the bitter Balkan wars of the 1990s, in which various alleged “genocides” by the Serbs were used to justify NATO military intervention. But Herman and Peterson noted that when the smoke cleared, outside researchers found that across all those years of bitter conflict, there had only been a total of about 100,000 deaths on all sides combined, mostly fighters killed in combat, with the casualty figures promoted by our media and uncritically accepted by Power having been wildly exaggerated.

So a supposedly comprehensive book on ethnic “genocide” completely ignored cases involving millions of civilians massacred along ethnic lines while devoting a large fraction of its text to a conflict involving a far smaller total of mostly battlefield deaths in a Balkan civil war, with the common factor apparently being the particular side the American government had taken in that conflict.

The most extreme example of this grotesque imbalance came in Power’s long chapter on the killings following the 1995 fall of Srebrenica. In that incident, which received absolutely massive global media coverage, Serb militias allegedly killed a few thousand Bosnian men, most of them probably former fighters, and even the details of that paltry supposed “massacre” have been sharply disputed over the years. Yet according to Wikipedia that “genocide” of Bosnians became a central impetus for the adoption of the R2P doctrine.

Thus, the Western media and Power gave enormous coverage to the killing, lawful or otherwise, of a few thousand individuals during Yugoslavia’s bloody secessionist civil war, while totally ignoring other cases involving millions of civilian deaths. Herman and Peterson supported their critique by providing a handy table presenting the ratio of deaths to media mentions of “genocide” across a number of recent cases, with those figures ranging from 12-to-1 for Kosovo to more than 300,000-to-1 for Congo. That difference of more than four orders-of-magnitude, along with the numerous hoaxes and propaganda falsehoods they discuss, brought to mind a passage from one of my previous articles that I’ve quoted on a number of occasions:

We naively tend to assume that our media accurately reflects the events of our world and its history, but instead what we all too often see are only the tremendously distorted images of a circus fun-house mirror, with small items sometimes transformed into large ones, and large ones into small. The contours of historical reality may be warped into almost unrecognizable shapes, with some important elements completely disappearing from the record and others appearing out of nowhere. I’ve often suggested that the media creates our reality, but given such glaring omissions and distortions, the reality produced is often largely fictional. Our standard histories have always criticized the ludicrous Soviet propaganda during the height of Stalin’s purges or the Ukrainian famine, but in its own way, our own media organs sometimes seem just as dishonest and absurd in their own reporting. And until the availability of the Internet, it was difficult for most of us to ever recognize the enormity of this problem.

The Herman/Peterson book was barely a quarter of the length of Power’s long work, but it covered a far wider range of modern historical examples and did so in a much more even-handed manner, lacking the tendentious ideological framework that Power was always working to establish. For example, they noted that the crippling sanctions that America had imposed upon Iraq after the end of the Gulf War destroyed the civilian infrastructure of one of the Arab World’s most modern countries, and probably cost well over a million Iraqis their lives. Indeed, in a notorious interview, Secretary of State Madelaine Albright had publicly declared that the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children were a necessary price to pay as part of our unsuccessful efforts to bring that country to its knees and drive Saddam Hussein from power. Perhaps three million Vietnamese civilians died, mostly at American hands, because of our military involvement in that country, but none of that appeared anywhere in Power’s account.

In some cases, three or four pages in the Herman/Peterson book seemed to do a better job of accurately and objectively summarizing a major historical example than the corresponding fifty or sixty pages in Power’s work. The authors’ longest chapter by far was the 18 pages they devoted to Rwanda and the Congo, later expanded into their 2014 book on the same subject, and they effectively demolished the entire factual framework assumed by Power and nearly all of our mainstream journalists.

Despite all these severe flaws, Power’s book received almost unprecedented attention and accolades, while the far superior work by Herman and Peterson was totally ignored by the mainstream media, but I strongly concur with the glowing assessments the latter drew from independent if left-leaning journalists and writers such as John Pilger, Norman Solomon, and Diana Johnstone. Noam Chomsky provided the Foreword, in which he concluded that the term “genocide” had become so heavily abused and dishonestly weaponized by Western political leaders and their media lapdogs that it should probably be expunged from the language of international discussion.

Chomsky soon proved prescient in his concerns. The book had originally been published in 2010 and the authors added a long preface to their reissued 2011 edition, noting that NATO forces had attacked and destroyed Libya that year, with its longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi killed in particularly brutal fashion, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proudly declaring: “We came. We saw. He died.” The figleaf excuse for that remarkable attack on a sovereign state had been Gaddafi’s successful military efforts to suppress a Western-backed uprising by Islamicist fighters loosely associated with Al Qaeda, which NATO leaders claimed might potentially lead to civilian massacres, allowing them to invoke the “R2P” doctrine so successfully popularized by Power.

As a consequence of that NATO intervention, the wealthiest, most prosperous state on the African continent was destroyed and politically fragmented into territories held by violent rival factions, a situation that persists down to the present day. Even at the very early date that the authors wrote, widespread massacres of the African workers previously imported by the overthrown regime had already taken place, along with the establishment of public slave-markets. So a military intervention purportedly aimed at preventing a purely hypothetical civilian massacre had instead led to an actual one, largely along ethnic lines, but no mention of any of these facts let alone any apologies appeared in the 2013 edition of Power’s text.

Although her book had appeared a few years before the beginning of ethnic bloodshed in the Darfur region of Sudan, she covered it in some of her later articles, at a time when that alleged “genocide” had become an enormous topic in the Western media, eventually leading to military intervention. Herman and Peterson devoted a few pages to their scathing criticism of her ignorant and biased coverage, which falsely racialized a conflict between two groups of Muslim black Africans, involving relatively small numbers of deaths compared to Congo, Iraq, or many other places. They argued that the obvious motive for the Darfur propaganda campaign was to support American policy interests and deflect media coverage from other events, something that I had myself noticed at the time. Thus the media endlessly vilified the allegedly genocidal “Arabs” of Darfu even as America’s occupation of Iraq was causing the deaths of many hundreds of thousands of Arab civilians.

Such periodic use of Darfur for propaganda purposes seems to continue even today. On Friday, the front-page of the Wall Street Journal was filled with a photo-laden story of the current horrors of Darfur, thereby allowing that newspaper to relegate Israel’s ongoing massacre and starvation of Gaza’s two million helpless civilians to a much smaller item at the back.

ORDER IT NOW

Although I regarded the Herman/Peterson book as a very effective counter-weight and rebuttal to Power’s volume, its focus was considerably different. Given the rather small number of civilian deaths in the Balkan Wars of the 1990s, the former work only devoted about a dozen pages to those events, half of them debunking the claims of an infamous Serb massacre of 45 Kosovans, heavily promoted by the Western media, but largely fictional. Meanwhile Power’s coverage ran three full chapters, totaling over 180 pages including the copious footnotes. Such a heavy emphasis on the Balkans was partly due to the massive Western media coverage devoted to those years of warfare on the European continent and the NATO intervention. But another obvious factor was Power’s own background as a young war reporter who covered that fighting during the middle years of the 1990s.

I therefore decided to read an additional book on the same subject by Diana Johnstone, a longtime writer on European and international affairs, heavily praised by Herman and published by the same small leftist press. Fools’ Crusade had appeared in 2002, the same year as Power’s book, but although it attracted scarcely a sliver of the latter’s coverage and reviews, I found it provided a vastly superior treatment of both the factual details of the 1990s Balkan Wars and their complex origins.

The West’s war against the Serbs became a tremendous cause celebre, not merely for the NATO officials eager to demonstrate that their half-century old military alliance still had a purpose after the end of the Cold War, but also among the left-liberal literati, who sought to relive the heroic stories they’d imbibed about their grand-parents’ triumph over the evil Nazis. Since Nazis had grown scarce in Europe, they had to settle for the stubborn Serbs of the former Yugoslavia. Ironically enough, those same Serbs had actually been a major thorn in the side of the Axis occupation forces during World War II, but they were now portrayed as the absolute villains of these new conflicts and the latter-day heirs of the Third Reich. This certainly included the Serbian political leader, Slobodan Milošević, a rather bland and pudgy former banker who was often denounced as “the new Balkan Hitler.”

Given this widely-accepted simple morality play, Johnstone’s nuanced and detailed contrary analysis naturally provoked enormous outrage, leading to the rejection of her manuscript by its Swedish publisher. But quite a number of prominent leftist international luminaries—intellectuals and journalists including Noam Chomsky, John Pilger, Arundhati Roy, and Tariq Ali—all rallied to her defense, declaring her book “an outstanding work” and “an appeal to fact and reason,” and after carefully reading it, I’d strongly concur. I’d never really understood why the Balkan Wars had broken out, and after digesting Power’s very lengthy coverage of those conflicts, I remained just as mystified, aside from her implication that the Serbs and their leaders were racist, genocidal evildoers. But the first couple of chapters in Johnstone’s excellent book greatly clarified matters for me.

Although Yugoslavia’s ethnic groups had often been fractious—regularly massacring each other during World War II—for the previous couple of generations the country had been peacefully held together under the tight grip of Marshal Tito’s dictatorship. But his death in 1980 had left a political power vacuum and the complex system of ethnic apportionment he had established led to a great deal of political paralysis. As a result, the country limped along in the years that followed, but faced growing problems of economic inefficiency, with the wealthier regions angry that they were heavily subsidizing the poorer ones. While the Soviet Union still existed, NATO countries had always viewed independent Yugoslavia as a thorn in Moscow’s side, and therefore provided heavy political and financial support; but after the Cold War ended and the Warsaw Pact dissolved, Western attitudes hardened.

Meanwhile, the wealth of the EU became a tremendous lure for many Yugoslav republics, which yearned to break free and join that enticing economic bloc. Prior to 1918 several of these such as Croatia and Slovenia had spent centuries ruled from Vienna as components of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and they deeply longed to rejoin their prosperous former partners. In addition, large numbers of Yugoslavs had spent many years as guest-workers in Western European industries or had close relatives who had, and they had been greatly impressed by the much higher standard of living and superior lifestyle they had seen.

Given such enormous temptations, it was hardly surprising that Slovenia—the wealthiest and most Westernized republic—soon seceded from the Yugoslavian state, a step that involved only relatively minor bloodshed.

Croatia soon followed as well, but that separation posed far more serious problems since Serbs and Croats had brutally massacred each other during World War II and the populations were also intermingled. Portions of Croatia were majority Serb and those inhabitants were very fearful of what they would face as a small minority in a new country completely ruled by their traditional Croat enemies. Furthermore, much of the financial and political backing for independence came from the Croatian diaspora communities of North America and Western Europe, many of whose members had emigrated after the defeat of their independent fascist wartime state, which they still fondly remembered. But for Serbs, Croatia’s new checkerboard flag recalled many terrible wartime atrocities, having cultural connotations similar to that of the Nazi Swastika banner. So those Serb regions attempted to secede from secessionist Croatia, leading to considerable bloodshed and an eventual round of massive ethnic cleansing against hundreds of thousands of Serbs. Those latter events were hardly emphasized by the Western media, which treated the Serbs as the designated villains of their storyline.

Although Milošević was regularly demonized as a fierce, even bloodthirsty ultra-nationalist, Johnstone argued that this portrayal was dishonest propaganda based upon misinterpreting a few isolated sentences in his public speeches. Instead, the Serbian leader regarded ethnic nationalism as a deadly threat to his multi-ethnic Yugoslavian state, but after being forced to accept the departure of Slovenia and Croatia, the remaining Yugoslav population became overwhelmingly Serbian, leading to further strains with the other groups that remained.

This was especially the case in Bosnia, which contained a complex tangle of Serbs, Croats, and Bosnian Muslims, leading to communal and secessionist violence. At the time, the Serb leadership claimed that they were facing an influx of fanatic Islamic Jihadis, many of them veterans of the Afghanistan war, who arrived to support the Bosnian Muslims, and I’d always regarded that as merely wartime propaganda, but Johnstone asserts it was absolutely true. Furthermore, she suggested that many of the highest-profile attacks on Bosnian civilians that inflamed sentiments in the West and led to NATO involvement seemed suspiciously like the false-flag operations that Serb advocates had often claimed they were.

Although Serb hands were hardly clean in Bosnia or in the later conflict with Muslim Albanian secessionists in the Kosovo region of Serbia itself, the Western claims of huge Serb massacres and wholesale ethnic cleansing were grotesquely exaggerated, intended to justify NATO military efforts that were actually motivated by geopolitical and ideological factors. Thus, just as in Rwanda, Western journalists became the “useful idiots” manipulated by NATO propagandists into “manufacturing consent” for what essentially amounted to a Western war of aggression against the Serbs of the former Yugoslavia.

I’m hardly a Balkan expert, but Johnstone’s account of the war and its roots seemed quite convincing to me, certainly much more so than what was sketched out in Power’s book, and the former’s depth of knowledge was considerable. Although a Minnesota native by birth, Johnstone had become very active in the movement opposing the Vietnam War and eventually relocated to Paris in the early 1970s, so she’d been living on that continent and extensively writing about its political conflicts including Yugoslavian issues since Power’s infancy.

Even a casual examination of the two books demonstrated Johnstone’s far greater depth of understanding. For example, the complete bibliography of Power’s long work included nearly 500 titles, but just as I’d expected every single one of them was in English, suggesting that the author lacked solid knowledge of any other language. I can hardly fault her on that score since I suffer from that same disability, but I noticed that Johnstone’s discussion of the Balkan conflict and its history drew very heavily upon publications in French and especially German. For generations, that last language had dominated most academic scholarship, certainly including important works on the Balkans which had spent centuries within Vienna’s orbit, while German political leaders had more recently played a central role in the NATO decision-making regarding that conflict. So Johnstone obviously had access to a wealth of information while Power was forced to rely upon a much narrower range of sources.

ORDER IT NOW

Over the years I’d occasionally read Johnstone’s articles at Alex Cockburn’s Counterpunch, and always found them very solid and thoughtful, but I had little knowledge of her background. Then in 2020, she’d published Circle in the Darkness, her personal memoirs, and the very favorable comments it had attracted led me to read it soon afterward. I found her personal history an interesting and impressive one, and her background greatly strengthened the credibility of her analysis when I very recently read her account of the Balkan conflicts, which diverged so sharply from that of Power and almost all other mainstream Western journalists.

Johnstone celebrates her ninetieth birthday this year, but the acuity of her thought and her analysis remains entirely undiminished as demonstrated by her excellent recent pieces on the current Israel/Gaza conflict and the political reactions in France and America.

Although I’ve been sharply critical of Power’s book and the rather superficial analysis of events it provided, in all fairness we should consider her circumstances. She apparently researched and wrote most of it while she was still in her late 20s, enrolled as a Harvard Law School student, so it was hardly surprising that she lacked the deep knowledge of noted scholars such as Herman, who had been publishing books on important policy issues years before Power was even born.

Should we really expect a fledgling young policy writer such as Power to strongly challenge the almost universally accepted factual narrative on major world events such as the Balkan Wars or those in 1994 Rwanda while still enrolled in law school? Only a twenty-something writer of extraordinary knowledge, skill, and self-confidence would have done so.

Even if Power had possessed that rare combination of impressive traits, would her book have even been published, let alone received a sliver of the massive recognition that it did? Surely an unknown, uncredentialed first-time author proposing any such “conspiratorial” narrative would have merely collected rejection-slips, while severely damaging her own career prospects in the process. Herman was a long-tenured professor at an Ivy League school who had already published 18 previous books, some of them enormously influential volumes, yet his short 2010 contrarian analysis on the same topic of genocide was only released by a small leftist press and was never reviewed in any mainstream publication so that I only first heard of it a few weeks ago.

I’d spent the decade of the 1990s almost entirely focused on domestic American policies, so I paid little attention to the Balkan wars that broke out in the former Yugoslavia, drawing my limited understanding of those conflicts from the numerous articles in my regular newspapers and other publications. During those years, my favorite magazine was The New Republic, which I read cover-to-cover every week, and I’ve now discovered that much of its Balkan coverage came from the young Samantha Power, then working as a war reporter in the region, who published nearly a dozen TNR pieces during those years, few of whose details had stuck in my mind.

Reading them all again, I think they mostly seemed fine though written in the saucy, ironical TNR style of that era. I don’t doubt that Power was an honest journalist, and that her factual statements and the incidents she described were accurate. But as a young reporter on her first overseas assignment, she naturally seemed to absorb all the broader assumptions about the underlying causes of the bloody conflict that were ubiquitous among her senior colleagues and the NATO political officers who presumably fed them much of their information. Since her account so closely matched everything else I was reading in my other mainstream publications, I’d vaguely assumed that this description of events was probably correct, so I can’t really condemn Power without condemning myself as well, and for very similar reasons. In those pre-Internet days, obtaining information sharply divergent from the official narrative was a much more difficult undertaking.

Similarly, although the horrors in Rwanda had been a major inspiration for her influential book, she seems never to have actually visited that country nor done any personal reporting on those 1994 events, but instead relied upon media accounts and works by Gourevitch and others. Her Rwanda bibliography included almost two dozen mainstream books and reports, supplemented by her extensive reading of declassified Clinton Administration documents and interviews with former American officials. So it appears that she merely absorbed and digested the official narrative of events, then regurgitated them overlaid by her own interpretation, soon receiving enormous adulation as a consequence. Around the time she completed her manuscript, she also published an 18,000 word article on Rwanda in The Atlantic Monthly, a somewhat shortened and reworked version of her chapter on that same subject, so those interested in her perspective can easily read it online.

Over the decades, I assume that Power has gradually become aware that very serious questions have been raised about the accuracy of the Rwandan and Balkan portions of her book, which may have presented an inversion of reality. Similarly, she must recognize that her demonization of Saddam Hussein for killing tens of thousands of Iraqis helped enable our subsequent Iraq War and occupation, during which probably more than a million Iraqis died and many additional millions were displaced. But it is only human for her to brush those concerns aside, given that those writings became the foundation of her very successful humanitarian career.

Although we should not be too harsh on the serious mistakes made by Samantha Power as a young writer, her more recent activities raise far graver issues.

In her influential book, one point she had emphasized that was widely repeated in many of its glowing reviews was her outrage that no prominent member of the Clinton Administration had spoken out against the ongoing genocide in Rwanda or resigned as an act of protest.

But Power wrote those words more than twenty years ago, and today she herself holds exactly that sort of prominent position in the Biden Administration even as it facilitates Israel’s genocidal rampage in Gaza, now pushing two million Gazans to the brink of starvation, so her own silence speaks volumes. Unlike the confused and obscure pattern of killings taking place across rural Rwanda—which were probably the opposite of what most Westerners believed—scenes of war crimes and slaughter in Gaza are easily available to the entire world on social media, with many Israeli soldiers gleefully broadcasting their brutal atrocities and a very long list of important Israeli officials publicly declaring their genocidal aims. But Power apparently recognizes that the international “Responsibility to Protect” principle that she had helped to establish contains one huge exception.

Presumably her continuing silence mostly reflects her careerist ambitions to remain in the good graces of the zealously pro-Israel donor class of her own Democratic Party and therefore position herself as a possible Secretary of State in a future administration. But perhaps there may be another factor as well.

As would be expected, three of the earliest chapters of her book focus upon the Nazi campaign to exterminate Europe’s Jews during World War II, certainly the archetypal example of a twentieth century genocide, and her framing narrative explained how it gave rise to that newly invented term. Power was born in 1970 and her entire life has probably been lived in the cultural shadow of the Holocaust.

But if she fully admitted to herself that the conclusions she had reached in her chapters on Rwanda and the Balkans may have been upside-down and backwards, a far more horrifying possibility might begin to enter her thoughts. Those former events happened in the here and now and she herself had covered some of them as a journalist. So if her understanding had been inverted, perhaps that could also be the case for matters that took place long ago and far away.

As she watches the terrible events unfolding in Gaza, somewhere in the back of her mind she might begin to wonder whether the Nazi Holocaust—surely a central pillar of her entire world-view and belief system—may have merely represented an extreme example of Jewish psychological projection.

  1. Arguably the worst in Yugoslav wars were the Bosnian “Muslims” who committed war crimes against the Serbs far worse than the Croats did, and with full NATO support. The Bosniaks were nominal Muslims who during WWII enlisted fully in the Waffen SS Handschar Division, plus are closer to Bogomil pagan heretics (only converting to Islam to escape taxes under the Ottomon empire pre WWI).

It amazes me to this day hoe badly the Serbs are blamed and demonized over the 90s wars when they were acting defensively until Bill Clinton and Co got NATO involved

Mr. Unz, isn’t it possible both sides were partly correct? Could it be both Hutus and Tutsis are violent savages who massacred the other side when they held the upper hand?

Mr. Unz, isn’t it possible both sides were partly correct? Could it be both Hutus and Tutsis are violent savages who massacred the other side when they held the upper hand?

Sure. Under the persuasive Herman/Peterson reconstruction something like 100,000 to 200,000 Tutsis were massacred by Hutus, but several times more Hutus were massacred by Tutsis, perhaps as many as a million or more.

By contrast, the official narrative is that nearly all killers were Hutu extremists and nearly all the victims were Tutsis or “moderate Hutus.”

  7. The overwhelming violence in Rwanda happened well before I had gained access to the internet. At the time I was pretty busy, and if the TV (I hadn’t yet cut the cord) had any significant coverage, I surely didn’t notice it back then. For me the events were simply a few sparse news stories of killings in a distant land which were submerged within all the other going-on around the world. Without making a search, even now I couldn’t point my finger at or near Rwanda on an unmarked map of Africa.

Mr. Unz believes he has it all figured out, and maybe he has done precisely that. A cursory search has once again convinced me that my personally learning/confirming the truth of the matter would be the equivalent of composing a Master’s Thesis on the subject. My early work would involve making multiple decisions about which authors were capable observers. Which ones didn’t have an ax to grind on the issues involved. And so forth. But that new search I mentioned turned up a couple of interesting possibilities – at least if their titles are to be believed.

Many bloody hands: responsibility for genocide in Rwanda
    https://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/handle/1721.1/9646/42379060-MIT.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y

Testing the Double-Genocide Thesis for Central and Southern Rwanda
    https://francegenocidetutsi.org/VerwimpDoubleGenocide.pdf

So I’m going to go with a WAG that things in Rwanda were complicated enough that clever/dedicated authors could – and did – “spin” the story to suit their own agendas for favoring one side or the other.

The authors squarely took aim at the entire historical and ideological framework successfully erected by Power and her allies, and indeed her book was the first one they briefly critiqued, focusing less upon its errors than upon its striking omissions.

This is a technique I’m using a lot these days. If an author completely ignores a major event which he/she could not help knowing about, that’s a major Red Flag for me which provokes an even closer inspection. More often than not the book in question gets a trip to a very hot brush fire.

Finally, I was pleased to see Mr. Unz taking note of Ms Power’s hypocrisy in ignoring an ongoing Genocide in Gaza. Until a few moments ago I hadn’t known both she and her husband are devoted Zionists.

Thanks for this very interesting and insightful article, Ron!

As a side note, in regards to this part of your article:

One can argue that the situation of Serbs and Russians in the 1990s after Yugoslavia and the USSR collapsed was in some ways very similar to the situation of Germans and Magyars (Hungarians) in the 1920s after the German Empire and Austria-Hungary collapsed. In all of these cases, there were now millions of co-ethnics who ended up being stuck outside of the borders of their specific nation-state, and all of these countries suffered a huge loss in power and prestige, in the former’s case, due to them losing WWI, and in the latter’s case, due to the collapse of Communism and the end of the Cold War. Unsurprisingly, in all four of these cases, there were also subsequent attempts by the relevant nation-state to regather at least some of their stranded co-ethnics abroad and reincorporate them back into their own nation-state. Germany did this under the Nazis, Hungary did this in the late Horthy period, Serbia tried to do this under Milosevic, and Russia is currently doing this under Putin ever since 2014.

I also wonder if there will be any other cases in the future where a multinational state will break up and where there will be a problem with many co-ethnics being stranded outside of the relevant nation-state. Maybe Afghanistan if the Taliban will ever lose power there? What do you yourself think about this, Ron?

PS: She’s a true leftist, and as such, excoriates the European Greens and US Democratic Party, and their leaders. Hamas’s incursion into Israel on October 7 transformed the politics of the Middle East. Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) has carried out a forensic analysis of the events of that day – examining seven hours of footage from CCTV, dashcams, personal phones and headcams of dead Hamas fighters, and drawing up a comprehensive list of those killed.

In October 7, the I-Unit reveals widespread human rights abuses by Hamas fighters and others who followed them through the fence from Gaza into Israel.

But the investigation also found that many of the worst stories that came out in the days following the attack were false. This was especially true of atrocities that were used repeatedly by politicians in Israel and the West to justify the ferocity of the bombardment of the Gaza Strip, such as the mass killing of babies and allegations of widespread and systematic rape.

In particular the I-Unit reveals that claims by the Israel Defence Force that it found 8 burned babies at a house in Kibbutz Be’eri were entirely untrue. There were no babies in the house and the 12 civilians inside were killed by Israeli forces when they stormed the house.

This was one of a number of incidents where the police and army appear to have killed Israeli citizens.

October 7 is a deep dive into the events that led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, the significance of which will reverberate for decades.

  11. Meanwhile, we and our NATO allies have harshly condemned the Russian action as a grossly illegal invasion of a sovereign nation. So what appears like a humanitarian military intervention to some observers seems more like an illegal foreign invasion to others.

It appears you are trying to suggest hypocrisy. However, Putin’s aggressive attack and subsequent war in Ukraine was definitely not a “humanitarian military intervention” because it initially focused primarily on regions that were not involved in the conflict with the separatist rebels, where the population purportedly needed to be protected form the Ukrainian forces.

The opportunistic invasion that was launched from Belarus was clearly intended to stage a military coup in Kiev and then take control of the entire country, which Putin had decided did not have a right to exist as a sovereign nation. (Less than four days prior to the invasion a Russian spokesperson proclaimed that nobody intends to invade Ukraine.) This military expedition might have appeared to be “humanitarian” only to those who were poorly informed and also reflexively inclined to believe whatever unfounded and nonsensical claims Russian media and spokespeople propagate.

The Wikipedia article about the R2P doctrine that was cited above with regard to its three pillars also mentioned the following:

The Responsibility to Protect differs from humanitarian intervention in four important ways.
…The use of force may only be carried out as a measure of last resort, when all other non-coercive measures have failed, and only when it is authorized by the UN Security Council.

Less than two days ago (March 23, 2024 at 4:55 pm GMT) I pointed this out in a parallel thread, in response to somebody who had insinuated that Russia’s invasion was justified:

If there was a case to be made for intervention and Russia had been genuinely concerned, its representative could have brought the conflict to the attention of the UN in order to invoke the R2P doctrine, but this was not even attempted.

In light of these facts it is truly annoying that there continue to be efforts on this site to trot out bogus assertions or flawed arguments attempting to justify the Russian war of aggression, which has been repeatedly condemned in the United Nations along with Russian attempts to illegally annex territory currently it currently occupies.

There’s a large Serb diaspora, and a large fraction of those Serbs live in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_diaspora

There are probably a lot of German-speaking Serbs who can give firsthand accounts of what happened to the Serbs in the 1990s. I think the diaspora in North America disproportionately consists of Serbs from Bosnia, the very ethnically mixed country that hosted a lot of the fighting in the 90s.

At this point, it’s not surprising to learn that the narrative regarding the Balkan Wars is grossly distorted. It’s unfortunate how reliably the United States takes the wrong side in armed conflicts in other parts of the world. Jihadis have been very useful for American neoconservative schemes.

-The war in Yugoslavia had been fought in order to establish a military base in the Balkans

Is it just me, or does this evoke shades of Woodrow Wilson’s baffling, self-serving, and legally dubious assertion that Americans suddenly had the “right” to travel into war zones on belligerent ships?

The Beeb is happy to market whatever line that His Majesty’s Government chooses to take – if it is a left wing one. They succeeded in promoting homosexuality and kept Jimmy Savile out of prison. They failed with Rolf Harris. Paedophilia is fun for the perpetrators.

The media stories about Biafra were wrong, seriously misleading. Frederick Forsyth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Forsyth ] was there to report for the BBC but they preferred the Foreign Office version of reality, basically the opinion of the relevant British official, to wit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hunt_(diplomat). Nigeria has oil so their credit was good. Selling them as much ammunition as they could use was not a problem.

Forsyth wrote about that war in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Biafra_Story

Most of the 3 million plus deaths were caused by starvation. The locals never quite worked out what rifle sights are for.

  29. For generations, the BBC has been regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious and reputable mainstream sources of news information…

Not anymore. The BBC, not unlike many British right wing news organizations, has now taken to cheering on the Gaza genocide along with an uncompromising resistance to providing space for alternative narratives. What a volte face!

Credit where it’s due: their reporting on Premier League football has been almost exemplary, save for its tendentious reporting against players of color.

  30. Ron Unz speaks Truth to Power, but, as she’s built her career on lies, she’s not listening. ( Sorry, but I couldn’t resist ).

    RU
It’s very rare that a single book changes the world, but Power’s blockbuster achieved that notable distinction, promoting the legal principle of “Responsibility to Protect,” a phrase that became so ubiquitous it was soon abbreviated as “R2P.” A unanimous 2005 vote of the UN General Assembly later endorsed that new international doctrine, which obligated America and other major world powers to protect citizens around the world who were threatened with massacre or genocide at the hands of any government including their own, thereby seeming to authorize militarily intervention.

This “principle” is not embodied in a treaty, never mind enacted into the domestic law of individual countries. Only the last would make it legally binding on those states. Obviously, a concept as diffuse and malleable as this will be used for whatever purpose a state party wants it to be. No doubt when it was acclaimed in 2005, Western states, particularly America, thought it would be useful for their purposes only, but they hadn’t thought it through. As you say, it was used as recently as 2022 by Russia to justify its actions in Ukraine.

Few took that justification seriously, and even less took similar justifications by Western states in Syria, Libya and elsewhere. As a principle, it seems to be fading into well-deserved obscurity. Far from changing the world, it seems to have died a death.

A good analogy would be with the unilateral declaration of independence ( from Serbia ) made by Kosovo in 2008. International law does not support such declarations. So Serbia asked for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, fully believing that their case would be upheld. In the event, the Western dominated body supported Kosovo’s case by 10 to 4 ( surprise, surprise ! )
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advisory_opinion_on_Kosovo%27s_declaration_of_independence

The delight felt by Western Governments soon turned to consternation. The secession of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 could be justified on these grounds, as well as the unilateral Catalan Independence Referendum of 2017, amongst others. Did anyone say own goal !

Admittedly, it’s only an advisory opinion, and has no hard legal consequences. But no state party is going to ever call in the ICJ again in matters relating to UDI by one of its constituent parts. The Kosovo opinion killed that. Notice how Ukraine has not followed this route over Crimea.

True. Also worth noting is that, when the US decided to depose Milosevic, they created, armed and trained the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army. When the KLA started attacking the Serbian police, the United States delivered an unacceptable ultimatum to the Serbs, who were vilified in the media the entire time. When they didn’t accept the ultimatum, they bombed Serbia and occupied Kosovo, turning it into a hub for drug mafia.

  33. An entertaining read from Mr Unz, as usual, but there is no surprise that a good Catholic girl from Ireland who marries into the US Jewish Ascendancy should turn, in all intellectual respects, rancid.

  34. Great history again. But when are we going to talk about the GENOCIDE GOING ON NOW HERE in America! The Genocide of the Northern Europeans? When are we going to talk about that! Before the Rwandan Genocides and this current Gaza genocide—Genocide has been happening HERE in America!

Immigration is War. The 1965 Immigration Act was an act of GENOCIDE—ALL OF THAT BEFORE the Rwandan and this Gaza genocide! Ethnic Dilution practiced in the Soviet Union is SOFT Genocide–that is the 1965 Immigration Act–that is ITS PURPOSE! Genocide by ethnic dilution!

De-segregation–when the US Supreme Court adopted Judeo-Masonic-Bolshevism value that segregation is wrong! And when the American Government used the 101st Airborn Div to desegregate the South–that was an ACT of SOFT Genocide. It was also Treason.

Genocide is the ending of a Racial Unit. What do you think the anti-racism agit-prop is?—GENOCIDE!

America is ONE LARGE GENOCIDAL ORGANIZATION. It is genociding its own ethnic Majority–and it is the JEWS themselves that are orchestrating this! How about we talk about OUR Genocide going on right now!

OUR Genocide is HAPPENING NOW–IT is been happening since George Washington, when as Mason:

Recommendations to reorganize two Rhode Island regiments into integrated rather than segregated groups, in a letter to Major General William Heath (29 July 1780), in The Writings of George Washington, 19:93. According to historian Robert A. Selig, the Continental Army exhibited a degree of integration not reached by the American army again for 200 years (until after World War II).

THAT is Jewish Messianism. Jewish Messianism in its drive for World Unity seeks the dissolvement of race–to dissolve Race and break down its racial cohesion is GENOCIDE. We are being genocided RIGHT NOW. –and OUR own government and churches and universities are doing this!

“Although I’ve been sharply critical of Power’s book and the rather superficial analysis of events it provided, in all fairness we should consider her circumstances. She apparently researched and wrote most of it while she was still in her late 20s, enrolled as a Harvard Law School student, so it was hardly surprising that she lacked the deep knowledge of noted scholars such as Herman, who had been publishing books on important policy issues years before Power was even born.

Should we really expect a fledgling young policy writer such as Power to strongly challenge the almost universally accepted factual narrative on major world events such as 1994 Rwanda or the Balkan Wars while still enrolled in law school? Only a twenty-something writer of extraordinary knowledge, skill, and self-confidence would have done so.”

Power is a classical representative of Establishment’s modus operandi of quid pro quo i.e enlisting new young guys from universities and media to do the official job of disinfo and gave them in turn sharp career rise solely built on propagandist academic work and scholarship.

Mr Unz in the digital age like Youtube you dont even have to publish book, you can reach to millions through sharp editing a video and present history in certain way that suits both the power elite and official narrative by exploiting anti establishmentarian sentiments of the masses but never touch the obvious Truth.

Johnny Harris is doing exactly this on Youtube,he previously worked with Vox on Border series and now with support of world economic forum,New York times and many more he is propagandizing american minds via selective presentation of American history of territoral expansion.

Is he helping propelling knowgly and unknowingly the same narrative of american history( which is specifically written after 1948 creation of israel)to present it as land of violent migrants of genocidal tendencies who replaced the indiginous people, to pacify the american gentiles ‘s objection to the Choosen people’s slaughter of Palestinian and their land grabbing.
Harris’ Wikipedia entry does support the above skepticism.

    (Excerpt):

Top secret papers reviewed by The Grayzone reveal Tony Blair demanded strikes on civilian targets in Yugoslavia days before NATO attacked them. While the UK military acknowledged a NATO strike on Hotel Yugoslavia would mean inflicting “some civilian casualties,” it insisted the deaths were “worth the cost.”

March 24 marks the 25th anniversary of Operation Allied Force, NATO’s 78-day-long bombing campaign against Yugoslavia. Still venerated in Western mainstream as a successful “humanitarian intervention” conducted to prevent an impending “genocide” of Kosovo’s Albanian population, the war was in fact a wantonly destructive, illegal assault on a sovereign, multiethnic country, based on lies and atrocity propaganda. Belgrade had in fact been engaged in a counterinsurgency battle against the CIA and MI6-backed Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), an Al Qaeda-linked extremist group.

The KLA—funded by the narcotics trade and organ harvesting—explicitly sought to maximize civilian casualties, in order to precipitate Western intervention. In May 2000, a British parliamentary committee concluded all purported abuses of Albanian citizens by Yugoslav authorities occurred after NATO’s bombing began, finding that the alliance’s intervention had actually encouraged Belgrade to aggressively neutralize the KLA. Meanwhile, in September 2001, a UN court in Pristina determined that Belgrade’s actions in Kosovo were not genocidal in nature, or intent ….

Congratulations on probably the most infantile comment on the Ukrainian war.
Initially and successfully, the intent was to force Kiev to the negotiating table and obtain an enforceable form of the “Minsk” agreements. This meant that all external parties had to be excluded and that Russia would be the enforcer.
The initial attack was hugely successful in that Ukraine and Russia came to an agreement with perhaps 90% of the terms finalised in Istanbul within a matter of weeks. Russia on reaching an understanding pulled it’s forces back from Kiev as an indication of ‘good faith’ and Ukraine stopped the artillery attacks on Donetsk and Mariupol.
Then came NATO in the form of Johnson and shot the thing down in flames, assuring Ukraine that NATO would not let them lose a war with Russia.
All wars must end in the unconditional surrender of the defeated. This one will end in the unconditional surrender and defeat of NATO. Already the concept of France or UK or Germany or the combined forces of NATO taking on a conventional war against Russia is nonsensical to any analyst.
But not only the armed forces of the west have been defeated but also the economic power of the west. A depression greater than 1929 is about to descend on the western countries and there is no way to stop it, meanwhile Russ-Asia is about to enter a century or more of plenty.

Could it be that Samantha Power was used as a tool by an academic at Yale with links to an Intel agency to write a book that propagated a doctrine, “Responsibility to Protect”, that would be used by the West as an excuse to expand its dominance over other parts of the world?

Let me go further, Powers book, “A PROBLEM FROM HELL, America and the Age of Genocide” got way too many glowing reviews for someone of her then stature to have been a natural phenomenon. The “reviews” were waiting for the right book to come along if you know what I mean, but the Establishment needed it to come from someone not obviously connected to themselves. I imagine she was “helped” to write that book, which fulsome praise had been pre-arranged, by an asset at Yale.

I WILL NEVER forget how a phrase in a book, “the invisible knapsack of White Priveledge” got uptaken by a huge gaggle of academic mockingbirds seemingly as if by magic, ALL AT FUCKING ONCE, to become accepted recieved wisdom instead of the loony lefty-conspiracy theory that it really is. Something much larger was obviously PRE-orchestrated there. The writer may have not known it, but some entity already had the idea in mind and was waiting for another to “put it into words” so that powerful entity could popularize it to the point of absurdity.

R2P could be used by the West to interfere with the East and Global South for all sorts of invented wrongs. Don’t allow gay marriage,? transexual reading hours? unlimited mass migration? BLM riots? Well then West has a “Responsibility to Protect” these marginalized groups in YOUR country!! Cue the “Military solution” to your humanitarian crises all lovingly provided by the West.

Btw……..Wikipedia is electronic writ, and thus can be utterly changed to rewrite history leaving no trace of the literature that was before it. New books can be written to contest the old ones so they can be compared, but when an encyclopedia becomes the only encyclopedia and it becomes “edited”, all previous writing on any matter becomes changed. One could literally rewrite the past via Wikipedia and billions would accept the changes in a generations time.

I bet you were never made aware of the Balkan Action Committee (BAC)… neither was I until I read Prof. Stephen Sniegoski’s The Transparent Cabal. In it, the good professor brings to light the existence of the BAC and the composition of its members:

Members of the interventionist Balkan Action Committee, which advocated NATO ground troops for Kosovo, included such prominent neoconservative mainstays as Richard Perle, Max M. Kampelman, Morton Abramowitz, and Paul Wolfowitz. Other neoconservative proponents of a tougher war included Eliot Cohen, Elliott Abrams, John Bolton, Bill Kristol, Robert Kagan, and Norman Podhoretz.

While it is rather surprising to find our favourite neoconservatives behind an organization pushing for war against Serbia, Prof. Sniegoski explains their motivation:

The attack on Serbia, ostensibly for humanitarian reasons, provided the intellectual groundwork for the attack on Iraq, the neocons’ fundamental target, since it set the precedent of violating international law’s prohibition against initiating offensive wars.

The US and its allies carved Kosovo out of Serbia, setting a precedent for later events. As owners of the planet the US can dictate what the borders in the Balkans should be as well as everywhere else. In America foreign policy moves are pitched as church sermons and R2P serves as the perfect cover for aggression. What the West did was completely unacceptable. Without any resolution of the UN Security Council, they directly began a military operation, a war in fact, in the center of Europe, and with the bombing of the capital of [Yugoslavia], Belgrade,” Putin told the Rossiya 1 channel.

One need not be partisan to see that this mildly expressed view is completely correct, especially as we now know the facts as above in the AP article.
It seems similarly inescapable that the current USUK bombing of Yemen will also be condemned, perhaps not as long as 25 years time. Yemen is fulfilling R2P in ref to the long duration Palestine genocide whereas USUK/west has been/is now promoting it.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that the occupation committed 8 massacres in 24 hours, killing 84 and injuring 106. This brings the total number of Palestinians killed in the Israeli aggression on Gaza since October 7 to 32,226, in addition to 74,518 injuries.

What I find amazing about Johnny Harris is his sudden rise to stardom with massive views by producing some okay videos that leave out key facts. In his story about how whites stole Indian lands, he doesn’t mention new DNA discoveries that Europeans and Africans arrived first. That “native” Americans are Asian immigrants who just claimed land and constantly fought each other for territory. The famous Apaches were hated by all since they were mostly thieves. Indians often attacked arrivals from Europe that were just minding their own business, or sought them as allies against other tribes they hated. Most were struggling root diggers until their lives vastly improved with horses and guns. Finally, Indians sent to Oklahoma hit the jackpot a few decades later when massive oil and natgas fields were discovered.

You’ve got to ask yourself: really, who seems to hanker more for a red-hot World War Three, “Joe Biden” or Vlad Putin? Since “Joe Biden” is only a figment of American politics, first you’d have to ask: a figment of what? Answer: A figment of our greater intel blob, led, of course, by the Central Intelligence Agency. Which is to say, the blob is our government now; there is no government except the blob. We are the United Blob of America! In Blob We Trust should be printed on our money.

That being the case, blob policy rules. And since deception is one of the blob’s chief duties, we mere sniveling citizens should expect to be deceived at every turn about everything. So, when the blob’s news cut-out, The New York Times, serves up a comprehensive history of the gang known as ISIS-K Monday morning after the Moscow Crocus Concert Hall Massacre, you might suspect that some deception is afoot.

ISIS-K immediately took credit for the Crocus Massacre. K stands for Khorasan, a set of provinces in eastern Iran, leaking over into Afghanistan and Pakistan. ISIS-K supposedly evolved out of the original ISIS that sought to establish an Islamic caliphate out of Iraq and Syria. After Mr. Trump broke it up in 2019, the gang regrouped in K-land, deeper in central Asia. Curiously, this ISIS-K has carried out attacks against Iran, where it lives. Go figure. . . . Its progenitor, the plain old ISIS-no-K was responsible for the horrific Bataclan Theater massacre in Paris, 2015 and the suicide bombing of the Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena, UK, 2017. While I would hardly call it an “investigation”, in the mid 90s we were living in an area where Yugoslav refugees were housed. Whether Croat, Serb, or Bosnian, they seemed to get along with the others. One couple was he a Serb, she a Croat, but both Eastern Orthodox. The common theme was: 1 language, 3 religions. A co-worker was a woman whose family came from Slovenia when she was a child. When asked, she really didn’t like any of the others, but was more comfortable with Croats, who, like her, were primarily Roman Catholics.
Interestingly, there is a split in the sizable local Ukrainian population along Eastern Rite Western (primarily Roman Catholic) Rite lines. Both are “anti-Russian” but the “Western” ones fanatically so.

Married Cass Sunstein, made groveling public apology for accurately describing Hillary as an immoral “monster” (wiki again); thought, “Wow, Samantha is the worst kind of power-hungry opportunist.”

The book that made her famous called on contemptible, amoral, go-along/get-along, careerist bureaucrats to give up their status, their comfort, their career, their wealth, to give it all up in order to prevent, minimize, and halt state mass murders. From her present post as Biden’s head of the U.S. Agency for International Development, she is the single person in the world whose protest resignation and public call for action would most minimize Gazan casualties.

I believe the French colonizers favored the Tutsis over the Hutus, giving them all of the top administrative positions the larger salaries the social prestige. Resentment built up gradually over time. But you are spot on that French policies were responsible for exacerbating social tensions.

  94. Unz: Over the decades, I assume that Power has gradually become aware that very serious questions have been raised about the accuracy of the Rwandan and Balkan portions of her book, which may have presented an inversion of reality.

In the article above, Ron Unz repeatedly mentions the “warped”, “fictional” and “false” reality created by the Powers-That-Be (or, in this case, by the Samantha-Power-that-be), concluding that it is not uncommon for the mainstream narrative on certain historical and current events to be its exact “polar opposite”: what happened, in these cases, is the “inversion of reality“. Now, if we move from this specific Rwandan case in which reality was inverted to the more general, it would be possible to develop a theory or at least a concept to describe the disturbing evidence arising from so many different historical events which seem to have been turned topsy-turvy by the official narrative.

Though I have many restrictions due to his shilling for Israel and generally purposefully obfuscating the Jewish Question to lead people astray — part of his role as controlled opposition — Brazilian philosopher Olavo de Carvalho, deceased a few years ago, still has some interesting concepts that may be salvaged if we know how to interpret them: as in a roman a clef, when he mentions “revolutionaries”, what he is really referring to is Jewish Power.

In several articles, Olavo proposes the concept of “revolutionary mentality”, one of whose offshoots he identifies as the “inversion of reality” — precisely as Unz has done to discuss a particular case. Olavo goes deep into these concepts, having written a book (really just a collection of articles) titled Revolutionary Inversion in Action — remembering that any time he mentions “revolutionary” we can plug in “Jewish Power” to make it a little more concrete. Here is a short excerpt of an article on his site translated to English from the original Portuguese:

In a subsequent article I shall explain the specific difference between revolutionary mentality and the other varieties of interpretation delusion. Here I intend only to illustrate something that I have said and repeated dozens of times: the inversion of reality is so constant and so omnipresent a factor in the revolutionary thought of all periods that samples of it can be found in whatever the mouthpieces of revolutionary ideologies utter about subjects of their political interest. A researcher has such an immense amount of instances at his disposal that the only difficulty for him is the embarras de choix, the choice of the most obvious and illustrative cases.

If Olavo’s concept holds any merit, one of the “important implications worth pursuing”, as mentioned by Unz, would be that the Jew-controlled media not only creates an alternate reality for us, but that it purposely turns this reality on its head, into its polar opposite — creating an inverted reality. So Unz’s discovery of the false narrative surrounding the Rwanda genocide is really just the tip of the iceberb: the enormity of the falsification of history also includes some of the most important events of the last century, not least of which is the Holocaust and its correspondent official narrative, which also went through this very same “revolutionary inversion” (though Olavo would never admit to this).

This line of thought leads to a startling conclusion, with which Unz closes off his article: “the Nazi Holocaust—surely a central pillar of [Samantha Power’s] entire world-view and belief system—may have merely represented an extreme example of Jewish psychological projection.” What this means, I think, is that the exact opposite of the Jew-constructed narrative occurred: not only were the Jews not Holocausted — a fabrication littered with additional absurdities such as “lamp shades” — but also that the real Holocaust was the one perpetrated by the Jews against the Germans after the war through the partial execution of the “Morgenthau Plan”.

In this most egregious case, Olavo’s theoretical underpinnings would apply once again (though he would never admit it), since he conceptualizes another type of “revolutionary” (Jewish) inversion, that of subject and object: that is, if the official narrative says party A is the aggressor (the subject) and party B the victim (the object), it is probable that the exact opposite may be true. Here is Olavo’s theory applicable to this point:

The revolutionary mentality, as it appears recorded in the writings and acts of every revolutionary leader since the fifteenth century, without one notable exception, consists not in adhering to this or that concrete politico-social proposal but in a certain structure of apprehension of reality, characterized by the inversion of the causal and temporal order and of the subject-object relation, a variety of secondary inversions deriving therefrom.

This inversion of subject and object could also be encapsulated in the dictum, often attributed to Lenin, which commands all his fellow “revolutionaries” to perform the ultimate egregious lie in order to not only falsify history, but also invert reality itself: “Accuse them of what you do.” For those interested, here is the link to the article in English from which Olavo’s quotes were extracted: https://olavodecarvalho.org/the-revolutionary-inversion-in-action/

    Nobody knows this:

In her first chapter, the Jewess Rosa Luxemburg, one of the leaders of the Communist Sparticist League in Weimar Germany, in her pamphlet “The Nationalities Question”, acknowledges the Jewish-Austrian writer, the democratic socialist Karl Kautsky (1854 – 1938), who wrote on the same subject:

“Kautsky formulates – as far as we know, for the first time in socialistic literature of recent times – the historical tendency to remove completely all national distinctions within the socialist system and to fuse all of civilized humanity into one nationality.”

This was BEFORE Hitler ever entered politics. That above IS GENOCIDE. The Program of SOFT Genocide. That is Jewish doctrine–Jewish Messianism–the rebuilding of the Tower of Babel.

In Mein Kampf, Hitler records Kautsky’s Democratic Socialists chanting in protest marches in Vienna “The nation is a capitalist construct”—THAT is SOFT Genocide. Then, when Hitler protested at his job site–The Commies used terror and violence to drive him off the site–making him lose a job. So here is a Patriotic German Austrian–and a bunch of Foreigners, Semites, deprive him of his national right! Make him loose a job because he objected to the genocidal ideology of the Jews!

The Holocaust was COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED on that grounds there! Jesus laid down the Law—“Do unto others as you wish they do unto you”.

WHO STARTED THE GENOCIDE???? —-JEWS DID.

And then the Biblical teaching of the Sword of the Lord. The Jews committed horrific crimes and destroyed Christian Russia. What??? God is sitting in heaven allowing the infidels to destroy His country? And ontop of that —they Genocided the Russian Royal Family! When Prince David didn’t dare touch a hair of King Saul, in so much reverence that he had for God’s annointed—THERE IS NO justification whatsoever for the Jew genociding the Russian Royal Family.

God gave the Sword of the Lord to the German National Socialists to wreck Judgement upon a wicked and evil people! They started the process of genociding Germany and recompense for their crimes in the Russian Revolution!

The Holocaust was JUST DESERTS. The Holocaust was JUST PUNISHMENT and RETRIBUTION FOR THEIR CRIMES and EVIL. The Germans do NOT have to apologize to nobody!

It’s very rare that a single book changes the world, but Power’s blockbuster achieved that notable distinction, promoting the legal principle of “Responsibility to Protect,” a phrase that became so ubiquitous it was soon abbreviated as “R2P.”

This did not happen by accident. The US policy makers wanted to be promoted. Samantha power was not alone in advocating that military forces should be used to stop the ‘genocide’. These people were working as AGENTS of the US empire and their intelligence services. Another person who like Samantha power, was deeply involved in this area was Payam Akavan. He is an Iranian-born Canadian lawyer. He left Iran for Canada in early 1970s. He is a Bahai coming from Jewish background. He was previously Legal Advisor to the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia at The Hague and special advisor to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.Akhavan, like Power, studied law at the empire building institution, ‘Harvard University’, where both were involved in phony ‘Human rights’ program at the Kennedy School. Both were deeply involved in in an affiliated Israel Lobby’s campaign, ‘Save Darfur’. They were spreading propaganda lies about HOAX ‘genocide’ in Darfur and ‘Child slavery’ in Sudan against Al Bashir.
The Darfur region of Sudan possesses the third largest copper and the fourth largest uranium deposits on the planet, in addition to strategic location and significant oil resources of its own.Meanwhile, the “Save Darfur” advocated pressing military intervention in Darfur as a “humanitarian” gesture. Advocacy groups—from the local Massachusetts Congregation B’Nai Israel chapter to the International Crises Group and USAID—have fueled the conflict through a relentless, but selective, public relations campaign that disingenuously serves a narrow policy agenda. ISRAEL’s involvement in Sudan was undeniable. Israel was very much in the southern Sudan and through its fifth column, Charles Jacob, directed a campaign of misinformation with a spurious charge (Child slavery) against Sudanese government to grant autonomy to southern Sudan where the ‘rebels’ were trained in Israel. Charles Jacobs  has a long history of working for pro-Israel lobby groups. In 1988, he co-founded Boston’s branch of CAMERA, and in 2002.
Samantha power, like Hillary Clinton, is a power chaser who does anything to promote her ‘career’. Samantha has been bought by Israel lobby and like Payam Akhavan is a servant of Jewish mafia interests. Payam Akhavan has done everything to label the Iranian government with ‘genocide’, but he has failed to utter, even one word, against genocide in Gaza like Samantha Power, because these phony lawyers are agents of the evil empire and Israel lobby.
An USAID employees who during a public event questioned Power’s stance on the war in Gaza and complicity in the U.S. policy.

“You wrote a book on genocide and you’re still working for the administration: You should resign and speak out,” said Agnieszka Sykes, a global health specialist who told The Washington Post she left her job at USAID late last week.

Sykes exposed ‘The Pulitzer Prize-winning work examines and condemns U.S. inaction on various atrocities, from Armenia to Rwanda, now she is silent on active genocide in Gaza because she does not want to put her ‘career’ in danger. Who can respect such liars and criminals?

I disagree. Power’s book was written in response to the 1990s “Rwandan genocide”. The whole “R2P” idea got its legs via that book, and it’s praise.

Remember the “Defund the police” bullshit they were pushing in 2020? That’s a “shock troop” idea designed to land so far behind ideological front lines as to scare the opposition into paralysis, which is what it did. Who popularized it and made it a thing? It was just another loony left idea that only a few social sciences “academics” bandied about until the blob decided to run with it and use its mockingbird media to mention it multiple times per day, interview its proponents during the Floyd riots, and have activists paint it literally on the streets.

It’s as if these things get decided by the blob, and they let an academic write a book, which the blob had pre-arranged glowing reviews for. Next thing you know the idea is discussed in reverential terms on talk-shows, news broadcasts, and newspapers. The West is gaslighted constantly by the blob. R2P was probably concocted right after the Berlin Wall fell in a blob brainstorming session.

This is exactly the same criticism David Irving levels against contemporary authors of books pertaining to the history of WW2. They mostly read one another’s books and then restate what they had read. He, on the contrary, had learned to both speak and read German and was by his account, the first to access many untapped, truly primary sources.

«The elevation of R2P completely reshaped international law, overturning almost four centuries of the world’s post-Westphalian diplomatic tradition as well as the Charter of the United Nations, both of which had prohibited intervention in the domestic affairs of another state. […] This powerful new principle became an important element of Western statecraft, used to justify our military interventions […] that led to the successful or attempted toppling of various world leaders.»

R2P is one of the *two* excuses for regime-change aggressions invented by USA strategic sophists: the other is to “recognize” some “sponsored” people from the country to be attacked to be the legitimate government of that country, and then be “invited” by them to enter that country to put them in power as the “democratic” government. For example claims that Assad is not the president of Syria, but an invader, and the legitimate government of Syria is a collection of USA “sponsored” small groups that have asked for the help of the USA.

Note: this technique is part of the ancient Roman Empire sophistry of the “iustum bellum” doctrine and indeed for an empire to attack another country based on the claims of some “sponsored” princes of that country is an even older practice.

In every case the aggression against a country by the USA military is described as a “police operation” to re-stablish the authority of the “democratic” government “sponsored” by the USA government, which makes the international laws against wars of aggression and non-interference in domestic affairs completely pointless.

Given that technique R2P is not necessary, but it is useful for “home front morale” propaganda because portraying an aggressive war as “saving babies” rather than “re-establishing a government” sounds better.

«So the international R2P legacy of the Rwanda Genocide has been an extremely skewed and selective one.»

«The most extreme example of this grotesque imbalance came in Power’s long chapter on the killings following the 1995 fall of Srebrenica. […] according to Wikipedia that “genocide” of Bosnians became a central impetus for the adoption of the R2P doctrine.»

There are many definitions of “genocide” but the “official” one is very different from the common sense definition: it about not the number of people killed, but about the motivation for killing or inflicting physical or mental harm, or even just cultural assimilation, on any number however small of an ethnic or religious or national group bedause of their belonging to a group.

So for example if some mad dictator decided to exterminate all ginger women in their country, or all people with blue eyes, or all men taller than 1.65cm, that would not be genocide, because none of those is an ethnic, national or religious characteristic. But a campaign of brutal derision to their face of the worshippers of Prince Philip, harming a bit the mental health of a tiny number of people, would be genocide under the “official” definition.

The “official” definition that makes “genocide” the mental or physical harm or the cultural assimilation of any number of people however small because of their national or religious or ethnic background was designed by a jew, I guess to apply principally or only to diaspora jews and israeli jews, which I can understand, but there are many other definitions most of which are closer to the intuitive definition (mass murder of a group, not persecution of individuals because of belonging to some narrow types of groups).

So the ICJ, which is fairly serious, called the Srebrenica massacre a “genocide” because the victims were all of a single ehtnic religious national group, and that apparently was why they were killed. While very few people seem to be outraged by the enormous massacres of Yemenis (a religious national ethnic group) or Rohyingias, and the vicious enforcement of policies for the cultural assimilation of ethnic greeks, italians, russians, hungarians, rosyns, romanians in Ukraine, involving millions of people.

«those same Serbs had actually been a major thorn in the side of the Axis occupation forces during World War II, but they were now portrayed as the absolute villains of these new conflicts and the latter-day heirs of the Third Reich.»

The motivation is transparent: for hundreds of years Serbia has been the ally of Russia in the middle of Europe, in part because the Serbs are both slavs and orthodox like (most) russians, and even if Yugoslavia was non-aligned with Russia (in part because it was run by a croatian communist).

The entire story of the splitting of Yougoslavia and then the war of aggression against what remained of Yugoslavia was a simple “teching of a lesson” to every government that being russian-aligned or too independent from the USA was career and life terminating.

The main technique used was Pilsudski’s “prometheism”, that is to encourage in multi-national federations (as long as it is not not the USA itself of course) nationalist splittism. This blog post by a fairly famous serbian expart describes well the process:

«large numbers of Yugoslavs had spent many years as guest-workers in Western European industries or had close relatives who had, and they were been greatly impressed by the much higher standard of living and superior lifestyle they had seen.»

Actually they had not been very much impressed, because yugoslav (and iberian and italian and greek) “guest workers” were treated then like turkish or north african workers are treated now (that is worked as hard as possible for very low pay and put to live in crumbling ghettos).

What impressed many yougoslavs (and poles and russians etc.) in their own country was that in “the west” (which included places like Portugal, Spain, sourthern Italy, Greece, northern England, Ireland) while ordinary workers had the same or often worse living standards as in soviet countries, middle and upper class people had much better ones, living in ostentatious affluence or fantastic luxury rather than merely comfortably or affluently. The east european colour revolutions were USA-“sponsored” rebellion by the middle and upper classes against too much egalitarianism and against the “lazy, overpaid” servant classes, just like reaganism/thatcherism has been in “the west”.

Such rebellion has succeeded wildly: nowadays the servant classes in eastern europe have still low wages, and much lower job security and government services, but middle class businesspeople and upper class oligarchs are living the american dream.

“During a White House meeting with Israeli officials in 2009, Samantha Power, like any other proud mother, pulled out a photo of her infant son. In speaking to the admiring crowd, she added a surprising detail: Her son, she said, is a descendant, from his father’s side, of the Vilna Gaon, Rabbi Eliyahu ben Shlomo Zalman Kremer, the 18th-century Jewish sage who is considered the greatest talmudic scholar of his time.

This impressive lineage — a product of Power’s marriage to prominent law professor Cass Sunstein — offers some insight into Power’s personal sense of connection to Jews. But it is not the key to understanding her strong backing within the Jewish and pro-Israel communities, despite past statements that have been seen as critical of Israel and of the American lobby that backs it.
“Her starting point has always been, ‘How do we work together to overcome obstacles and to ensure that both the United States and Israel get out of these U.N. situations with the least damage?” said Dan Arbel, who served as deputy chief of mission at the Israeli Embassy in Washington. «But I’ve gradually discovered that the historical roots of the R2P doctrine were equally dishonest. […] the true facts of the Rwanda killings had been the polar opposite of what I’d always been led believe.»

For the R2P argument it does not matter whether the Hutus started the genocide of the Tutsis or the Tutsis started the genocide of the Hutus, all that it matters is that mass murdering of some ethnic, national or religious group happened and neither the Hutu or Tutsi governments stopped it.

That USA propaganda portrayed it as mainly a Hutu massacre of Tutsis probably happened because the Tutsis were the favoured faction of the colonial power than the country was a colony, so they were perceived as allies of “the west”.

Note: my impression from various non-US/UK sources is that there was a vicious civil war, the Tutsis created the airplane incident, the Hutus started some/many massacres of Tutsis, the Tutsi army then took the opportunity to massacre the Hutus.

As to the “millions” victims of the Rwanda civil war most, like in WW2 for most central and eastern europeans, were not deliberately killed, they were “just” collateral damage, dying of hunger and sickness, like in most wars. People from the USA, Canada, Australian, UK, France, which were largely spared such horrors on their territory, in varying degrees, and suffered almost only combat losses, do not appreciate that usually only a small part of war deaths are deliberate (terrorist bombing campaigns in WW2 excepted of course).

«3 million Vietnamese civilians died or 3 million Iraqis?»

In this bit Ron Unz states that 500,000 children died in Iraq and 3,000,000 people died in Vietnam, “because of our military involvement”, that is like many propagandists do (and I think better of Ron Unz than of them) he counts all collateral victims (hunger, famine) of a war as the dole and direct responsibility of one side. This propaganda argument is used to claim that each and every death in a war, collateral or deliberate, was the sole responsibility of the aggressor party, and that is what makes claiming the other side is the aggressor so important for “home front morale” purposes, because propagandists are keen to make absolutist hyper-moralizing arguments that totally ignore the common notions of contributory responsibility or of indirect effects, attributing to the other side sole and objective guilt.

    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2009/1/12/683319/-
“In 2001 (before 9/11), Belgian historian Anne Morelli published a book analyzing the basic principles of war propaganda. Unfortunately and as far as I can tell, it was never translated to English (only in German). She credits the work of Lord Ponsonby, an amazing and unfortunately somewhat forgotten character. He stood, largely alone, in the Commons opposing WWI before it started, predicting not just the massacre it was going to be, but more interestingly for our purpose, how it was going to be sold to the masses. Morelli enumerates it as the following principles:

    1. We don’t want war, we are only defending ourselves
    2. The other guy is the sole responsible for this war
    3. Our adversary’s leader is evil and looks evil
    4. We are defending a noble purpose, not special interests
    5. The enemy is purposefully causing atrocities; we only commit mistakes
    6. The enemy is using unlawful weapons
    7. We have very little losses, the enemy is losing big
    8. Intellectuals and artists support our cause
    9. Our cause is sacred
    10. Those who doubt our propaganda are traitors”

  126. “As she watches the terrible events unfolding in Gaza, somewhere in the back of her mind she might begin to wonder whether the Nazi Holocaust—surely a central pillar of her entire world-view and belief system—may have merely represented an extreme example of Jewish psychological projection“

Is Samantha Power herself in fact actually Jewish? After all film actor Tyrone Power was in fact of Irish origin/ethnicity and his family (surname Power) was definitely, decidedly not Jewish but Irish.

The point being that the surname Power isn’t one that automatically screams Jewish, unless of course it has been anglicized from…something else entirely.

  127. @Zachary Smith

There was no cover-up in regard to Rwanda before the massacre. It was reported ok by the media. Kagame raised an army in Uganda and, with the support of that nation, invaded Rwanda to destroy democracy and establish a Tutsi dictatorship. When there were 1,500,000 refugees (all Hutu) and it was obvious that Kagame was going to win, there was an open attempt by Hutus to massacre Tutsi civilians.

How could a 10% minority backed by Uganda and fighting for dictatorship defeat a 90% majority fighting for democracy and backed by France? Kagame ran a brutal but relatively honest regime. The Hutu civilian and military leaders were notoriously corrupt. The only way democracy could have been maintained in Rwanda was if France did their fighting for them. France wasn’t willing to do that and neither was anybody else.

The Tutsi of Burundi, also a 10% minority, eventually accepted democracy even after their 1960s attempt to kill every Hutu who had finished primary school. Why? They were just as willing as Rwandan Tutsi to kill for dictatorship. The answer is simple: they were just as corrupt as the Hutus and had no relative honesty advantage in war. Their corrupt leadership had no interest in being ruled by Kagame. They wanted the perks of office for themselves and could bargain more successfully with the local Hutus than they could ever have dreamed of doing with Kagame. That may change in the future if there is ever a movement towards more honest government in Burundi.

The Congo massacres were inevitable given that 1% of Congolese were Tutsis and could be recruited as soldiers by Kagame. In fact, he appeared to come close to ruling the DRC but every step back by the Congolese Government moved their armed forces deeper into areas where Kagame had little support. He became a king maker for a time in the DRC but not an Emperor.

It’s just another story of Empire. [emailprotected]

I agree that R2P is a flawed argument for almost any military intervention, including that of the Russian SMO. A much better rationale, although still somewhat attenuated, would be preemptive self-defense.

Although the threat of direct NATO attack on Russian soil was arguably not immanent, it was clearly only a matter of time, especially given the relentless hostility and seething ethnic animus implacably expressed and exercised by the dominant “neocon” foreign policy establishment of the “West” toward Russia and all things Russian. Ever since the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union, NATO had become a hostile and expansive alliance directed at Russia, even moving up to its very borders. Had it been allowed to include Ukraine (and Ukraine been allowed to acquire nuclear arms, as it had threatened shortly before the invasion), it would present an intolerable threat much as Cuba’s threat to host Soviet nuclear missiles in that earlier crisis (during which we basically threatened the world with nuclear annihilation to prevent it).

Customary international law encompasses the consistent practice of states. No state allows itself to be threatened in such a manner and, unless they are simply too weak to do anything about it (as Russia arguably was in the initial phases of NATO expansion), no state can be expected to.

Ibrahim Rugova, an ethnic Albanian activist who advocated nonviolence, was expected to play a major role in the Albanian secessionist delegation. Joining him at Rambouillet was Fehmi Agani, a fellow member of Rugova’s Democratic League of Kosovo.
U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright regularly sidelined Rugova, however, preferring to rely on delegation members from the hardline Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which had routinely murdered Serbs, Roma, and Albanians in Kosovo who worked for the government or opposed separatism.

Rugova had at one time engaged in fairly productive talks with Yugoslav officials, and his willingness to negotiate was no doubt precisely why Albright relegated him to a background role. Yugoslav Minister of Information Milan Komnenić accompanied the Yugoslav delegation to Rambouillet. He recalls, “With Rugova and Fehmi Agani, it was possible to talk; they were flexible. In Rambouillet, [KLA leader Hashim] Thaçi appears instead of Rugova. A beast.” [2] There was no love between Thaçi and Rugova, whose party members were the targets of threats and assassination attempts at the hands of the KLA. Rugova himself would survive an assassination attempt six years later.
The composition of the Yugoslav delegation reflected its position that many ethnic groups resided in Kosovo, and any agreement should take into account the interests of all parties. All of Kosovo’s major ethnic groups were represented in the delegation. Faik Jashari, one of the ethnic Albanian members of the Yugoslav delegation, was president of the Kosovo Democratic Initiative and an official in the Provisional Executive Council, Yugoslavia’s government in Kosovo. Jashari observed that Albright was startled when she saw the composition of the Yugoslav delegation, apparently because it went against the U.S. propaganda narrative. [3] Throughout the talks, Albright displayed a dismissive attitude towards the delegation’s Albanian, Roma, Egyptian, Goran, Turkish, and Slavic Muslim members.

Concerning Power’s silence on the Gaza genocide, instead of considering the obvious possibility that her husband Cass Sunstein’s being Jewish could affect her judgment, Unz hops to his favorite hobby horse—Holocaust denial—as a ghost haunting Power’s thoughts.

How the latter possibility would lead her to ignore the in-plain-sight Gaza nightmare is unclear to me.

    Big “Hmmmmm” there.

  141. Paul Kagame does not approve this message… Perhaps Kagame will come to like the message after he rereads it again and again while behind prison bars for life for the crime of genocide.

  142. zwingli says:

“Although we should not be too harsh on the serious mistakes made by Samantha Power as a young writer, her more recent activities raise far graver issues.”

This is from an official press release from USAID by Spokesperson Jessica Jennings on March 1, titled ‘Administrator Samantha Power Visits Israel and the West Bank’

“On February 28, Administrator Power traveled to the Kerem Shalom border crossing, a key corridor for humanitarian assistance deliveries located where Egypt, Gaza, and Israel intersect. While there, she observed Israel’s inspection and screening processes for humanitarian cargoes before they enter Gaza…
Administrator Power met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, and other senior Israeli national security officials… The Administrator shared her condolences for all those brutally murdered and taken hostage by Hamas on October 7. With the significant deterioration in conditions for civilians inside Gaza, the meeting focused on the actions that must be taken to urgently and sustainably expand humanitarian access. Israeli officials agreed to take specific steps..,
She then met with Herzl Halevi, Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces. They spoke about sustaining and deepening our coordination to improve humanitarian assistance flows into Gaza and agreed on next steps to improve deconfliction systems to protect humanitarian aid workers and their ability to deliver assistance to vulnerable Gazans.
Administrator Power met with Yoav Gallant, Israel’s Minister of Defense, and Major General Ghassan Alian, Head of Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT)…”
On February 29, Administrator Power traveled to Ramallah in the West Bank. She visited the Learning Center at the Youth Village at Kufr Neemeh that has been severely damaged by recent extremist settler violence and forced to shut down. She spoke with young people from the community to hear about how settler violence – which was growing before October 7 but has spiraled significantly since ..
Next, Administrator Power met with Palestinians from Gaza to hear directly how the Israel-Hamas war continues to inflict terrible suffering on their lives and families…”
While in the West Bank, Administrator Power met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to convey the United States’ continued commitment to the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza, the imperative of protecting civilians and aid workers in Gaza, and the United States’ efforts to curb extremist settler violence in the West Bank.”

So Power meets with all of Israel’s top brass on the 28th & as she’s stroking Palestinians on the 29th, this happens: (https://www.epw.in/journal/2024/10/editorials/%E2%80%98flour-massacre%E2%80%99-gaza.html) And not a word about it in the press release from USAID the next day on March 1 – or since. Did she know beforehand or was the Jewish State just giving her & the hapless Biden the middle finger again?

Seminal or foundational literature vs copycat or derivative literature.

If one foundational literature spawns 100 derivative literature while another foundational literature spawns no such, it’s not really a case of

    101 versus 1

    but

    1 versus 1.

The derivative stuff counts for much less.

As to why a certain foundational literature inspires so many derivatives while another fails to is at the mercy of publishing, a thoroughly politicized process.

For example, just about every book at the library on Putin is damning. Not a single neutral or positive appraisal.
Publishing companies simply will not allow any fair-minded assessment of the man.

And just about every book on the biology of race is yet another derivative of the foundational nonsense by pseudo-Darwinians like Stephen J. Gould whose work inspired so many like it.

  145. Mahdan says:

Although I’ve been sharply critical of Power’s book .., in all fairness we should consider her circumstances.

This has NOTHING to do with Power’s age and everything to do with her hunger for power.People at the younger age are more radical, look at the Z – Gen today who are PRO PALESTINIANS. In fact Samantha power, at the younger age expressed her idea that US should support a Palestinian state because this is good for American’s interest. But when she was in search of a ‘career’ she turned 90 degrees against this idea since it was an OBSTACLE to reach power.
Payam Akhavan, a lawyer from Harvard University, close to Israel lobby like power, and a propagandist for the empire against countries such as Iran, Sudan, Libya, Syria, Iraq, Yugoslavia from the beginning. He, as a ‘specialist in genocide’ has not given one word against the genocide in Gaza after 6 months of killing and bombing. However, the FAKE American left, ‘World Socialist Web Site’ WSWS.org, brings quote from a liar such as Payam Akhavan on ‘genocide’ to impress its readers. The WSWS is using hoax ‘holocaust’ from Akhavan to talk about Gaza genocide:

PAYAM AKHAVAN, aspecial adviser to the International Criminal Court, wrote in 2021:
Extermination through disease and starvation in the ghettos became the staging grounds for the concentration camps. An estimated 700,000 Jews died in the ghettos from diseases such as typhus, having been abandoned to “perish in their filth.” In the Warsaw Ghetto “the death toll from typhus was estimated at 15 percent, even though the Germans prevented proper treatment … and refused to allow the necessary preventive measures to be taken and enforced.”

    https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2023/11/29/ghyt-n29.html

In the News we read the following on Nov. 23, 2023, that 45 days has passed since the start of killing in Gaza, but NO WORD by Akhavan on Gaza genocide:

International human rights lawyer (Akhavan) discusses genocide and conflict:
Payam Akhavan is an international human rights lawyer and special advisor to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). He’s best known for his work with the United Nations (UN) investigating conflicts and protecting survivors of genocide. The Peak attended Akhavan’s panel, titled “A Search for Justice,” where he discussed recent global conflicts.

Working with the UN, Akhavan investigated sites of violence and conflict in Croatia, Cambodia, Rwanda, Guatemala, Bosnia, and Timor Leste. He defended victims and survivors of genocide in Iran, Iraq, and Muslim Rohingya people in Myanmar. As an advocate and counsel, Akhavan served on the European Court of Human Rights, The Supreme Court of Canada, the ICC, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Akhavan is also the co-founder of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre, a non-profit that documents the state of human rights in Iran.

The ‘Iran Human Rights Documentation Center’ founded by Payam Akhavan in 2004 in New Heaven, funded by CIA to fabricate DOCUMENTS to be used against Iran claiming ‘genocide’. Payam Akhavan, Kaveh Shahrooz, both Harvard University Law School Graduate, and rabid zionist Roya Hakakian were involved with this CIA center.
Shame on WSWS, an illiterate leftist group promoting a servant of the evil empire Payam Akhavan, was pushing for a military action against Syria, Sudan, Libya and other target countries to stop HOAX ‘genocide’ that they are specialist in!

    …preemptive self-defense.
Although the threat of direct NATO attack on Russian soil was arguably not immanent, it was clearly only a matter of time…

Your “preemptive self-defense” argument is also highly flawed. Since NATO had not even undertaken any serious efforts (which would have been preceded by an information campaign) to expel Russia from the Königsberg / Kaliningrad region that it has been illegally occupying for many decades – from which Russia should also have withdrawn by 1994, as it did in the rest of the immediate Baltic region where its military had been stationed – then it is even more far-fetched that NATO would have had any ambitions to invade Russian territory in the future. A NATO attack on Russia is neither “immanent” nor imminent, and the supposition that it is “clearly only a matter of time” cannot be supported by any rational explanation; it is pure fantasy, so trying to draw analogies to the Cuban missile crisis more than half a century ago is inappropriate.

Russia began to threaten Baltic countries with nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in 2018 around the same time Putin proclaimed that he would want to undo the breakup of the Soviet Union if he had the chance, so it has been millions of Europeans, who have been threatened by Russia, but of course Russian propaganda is always keen to invert reality and play up the paranoid victim trope. You are essentially trying to invoke the “at our doorstep” cliché from two years ago, which was rightfully ridiculed because the concern about NATO stationing nuclear missiles new Russian territory was already addressed in the 1997 Paris agreement between Russia and NATO, nor had anyone even threatened to station such offensive missiles near the eastern border to Russia.

There was no actual or future threat to Russian population centers coming from NATO, neither from a troop invasion nor a missile attack, so there cannot have been any reason for a “preemptive self-defense.” This construct is simply an Israeli talking point used to try to rationalize its aggressive attacks against neighboring regions yet sounds even more ridiculous when invoked on behalf of Russia. In conjunction with the realities of the ongoing Russia’s threat against Europe, the imaginary threat against Russian territory also reeks of sheer hypocrisy.

In summary, Russia and its supporters have no legitimate arguments to justify Putin’s war of aggression. The initial attack, two years ago, was an opportunistic gambit that tried to exploit NATO’s weakness to quickly overthrow the entire Ukrainian government and take control over the country. Not only did it fail in its intended goal, it also backfired inasmuch as Finland and Sweden were thereby compelled to join NATO, so surely there will be somebody now willing to accuse them of being “Banderites” too.

    The Imprisonment of Slobodan Milosevic

Slobodan Milosevic, a man of courage and commitment was prevented from undertaking his own defence. He had ample evidence of the KLA’s links to both organized crime and Al Qaeda, which is a CIA intelligence asset created in the early 1980s. Milosevic was poisoned in his prison cell under the auspices of the ICTY Tribunal in The Hague. It was an outright extra-judicial political assassination.

    The Destabilization of Yugoslavia’s Economy

The war on Yugoslavia did not commence in March 1999. It was initiated almost 20 years earlier, in the 1980s. Multi-ethnic, socialist Yugoslavia was once a regional industrial power and economic success story: In the two decades before 1980, annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth averaged 6.1 percent, medical care was free, the rate of literacy was 91 percent, and life expectancy was 72 years.

The objective of the US-NATO led war in liaison with Wall Street and the Bretton Woods institutions was to destroy Yugoslavia’s model of market socialism while destroying the Welfare State and undermining its economic and social achievements

Strong “economic medicine “was imposed by the IMF and the World Bank, which was followed in the late 1980s by the imposition of an all-encompassing bankruptcy program which resulted in mass poverty and unemployment.

As revealed in an internal WB document, the World Bank’s so-called “trigger mechanism” was conducive to the layoff of 614,000 workers (out of a total industrial workforce of the order of 2.7 million).

These economic measures were followed by the IMF “Shock therapy” launched in January 1990. The budget cuts requiring the redirection of federal revenues towards debt servicing, were conducive to the suspension of transfer payments by Belgrade to the governments of the Republics and Autonomous Provinces.

In one fell swoop, the reformers had engineered the final collapse of Yugoslavia’s federal fiscal structure and mortally wounded its federal political institutions.

By cutting the financial arteries between Belgrade and the republics, the reforms fuelled secessionist tendencies that fed on economic factors as well as ethnic divisions, virtually ensuring the de facto secession of the republics.

    “The Globalization of War”

As mentioned above Yugoslavia was in many regards a “Dress Rehearsal”. The various phases which characterized the war on Yugoslavia are part of a broader process which is now unfolding Worldwide:

-economic warfare, strong economic medicine, sanctions
-the fragmenting and breaking up of entire countries,
-the imposition of regime change, the instatement of proxy politicians.
    -extensive bombings of civilians,
-the bombing of children’s hospitals as well as the killing of journalists, ongoing,
-the use of depleted uranium ammunition which causes cancer,
-military occupation, the establishment of military bases, the presence of foreign troops under a fake “humanitarian mandate”
    -media disinformation and war propaganda

It is part of a continuum since the 1990s, in the aftermath of the September 11 2001 attacks.

What is at stake is the globalization of war, namely America’s “Long War” against humanity on behalf of powerful financial interests. America’s hegemonic agenda consists in waging war –including economic warfare– against all major regions of the World, including the European Union.

This process is undertaken by destabilizing the nation state.

The NeoCons’ agenda is not to “win the war” but to engineer the breakup of sovereign nation states, destroy their culture and national identity, derogate fundamental values and human rights, and appropriate its resources.

The strategic objective is to trigger political and social chaos, engineer the collapse of national economies, appropriate the countries’ wealth and resources, impoverish the entire planet including the EU member states and the American Homeland.

It’s a mesh of weapons of mass destruction, covert intelligence operations, propaganda and “strong economic medicine”. The criminality of the US/NATO hegemonic agenda is beyond description.

What we are witnessing is the outright “criminalization of the state apparatus” whereby politicians, members of parliament, senior government officials are routinely bribed, co-opted or threatened to abide by a diabolical project which is literally destroying people’s lives Worldwide.

  151. Another eye-opener from Ron. Many thanks.

Fwiw, I worked for some decades in the MSM. My observation was that, during my years of involvement, 80% of what was produced by the MSM was propaganda for the powers-that-be/the-Establishment/whatever-you-want-to-call-it, while 20% of what was printed or broadcast was pretty good and reasonably truthful. These days it looks to me like 100% of what the MSM produces and sells is propaganda for the powers that be.

Two key things to be kept in mind when considering the news:

    1) Too many people seem to conceive of the news as information of significance that’s brought to them in a fairly transparent way according to generally agreed-upon principles. Nooooooo. “The news” is made. It’s a creation. You’re being sold narratives. There may (or may not) be some useful reality in there somewhere but it’s up to you to figure out what’s trustworthy and what isn’t. And always keep in mind that one of the most powerful tools that editors, owners and producers have to control the discussion is ignoring what’s going on. There’s a *lot* of important stuff happening in the world that you simply aren’t being told about.

    2) The people who are involved in making the news all have personalities, strengths, weaknesses, agendas, egos, ambitions and such. They’re delighted if you think they’re giving deep thought to issues, principles, responsibilities, etc. But what they’re really spending most of their time and energy on is careerizing, maintaining connections, positioning … Even so far as a specific news segment goes, what they’re mostly thinking about is placement, graphics, spin, impact, pacing, timing … These are often very skillful, talented people who can generally make attractive and compelling media artifacts, but deep thinkers they are not.

  154. Secretary of State Madelaine Albright had publicly declared that the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children were a necessary price to pay as part of our unsuccessful efforts to bring that country to its knees and drive Saddam Hussein from power.

This “price” is not a bug — it is a feature of Jew software. Whenever the Jews plan the destruction of a country, they’re thinking several steps ahead: “what are the obvious ‘unintended consequences’ that our mayhem will cause?”, the Jews ask themselves. And the Jews go through a checklist of consequences that will be good for the Jews:

    1) Israel’s enemies will be destroyed; check!
    2) This destruction will fill the pockets of Jews (military contracts, drug companies, etc.); check!
    3) The destruction will cause the death of many goys (especially Christians!); check!
    4) The resulting chaos will cause a massive migration into White countries; check!
    5) The massive migration will cause division and strife in White countries; check!
    6) The divisions within the White nations will cause the Whites to become desperate, nihilistic and suicidal, bringing down their life expectancies; check!
    7) The lack of hope of White men will open the way for the migrant invaders to take their women; check!.
    8) The takeover of White women by migrants will cause the browning of all White countries; check!
    9) The resulting browned, lower-IQ population will be even easier to control by the Jew masters; check!
    10) The domination of the Jews over the whole goy slave population (reduced and mongrolized) will then be complete and their “Messiah” and “God” — which is the Jewish people themselves — will rule over a Pax Judaica world for all eternity.

This is not a simple, straightforward plan. It is convoluted like the Talmudic mind itself. Thus we can never restrict our analysis of the Jews’ actions to a simple manifestation of pure evil: we must think in terms of evil piled on top of evil on top of evil. The Jews will not content themselves with simply being evil: they must squeeze as much evil as they can out of each of their heinous genocidal crimes.

Sometimes lengthy prescriptions, proscriptions and hoped for changes can ONLY be brought into existence by PAIN AND PUNISHMENT. All the homicidal mass murders, their support group, their shielders, etc, etc, simply never pay a price for their evil and psychopathy. Bill Clinton is walking the streets of Martha’s Vineyard, publicly. Barack Obama and Hilary Clingtongue are tefloned and immune for life. Under the R2P precedent set by NATO in its wars against Yugoslavia and Libya, Russia has every right to go to war against the Ukraine.

You are incorrect. Since the R2P doctrine was not endorsed by the UN until 2005 (see photo above), it could not have pertained to the NATO conflict with Serbia in 1999, six years earlier. The intervention in Libya in 2011 was based on UN authorization for a no-fly zone. Both interventions were basically limited to aerial bombing campaigns and did not involve any invading ground troops with tanks and howitzers. Your false analogies cannot serve as a pretext for what Russia has been doing to Ukrainians for the past two years.

More importantly, even leaving these points aside, Russia has clearly forfeited any such right that you wish to claim on its behalf because of the other flawed rationales that Russia has presented to justify its war, for instance the ridiculous reference to Prince Vladimir being baptized in 988 in Kiev, or the imaginary threat to Russia’s territorial integrity, or the so-called “de-nazification” agenda, which is a transparent revenge measure against Ukraine for its parliamentary vote to change its government eight years earlier.

You are missing an important point to understand a key premise in this conflict. The correct substitution would be United Staes for Ukraine and Mexico for Russia, applied in the following scenario, as a thought experiment:

What if the US Congress decreed, by law, signed by the president, that English would be the only official language allowed to be used by the federal, state and local governments, for the sake of unity, in efforts to reduce divisiveness? In response, Spanish speaking groups in the southwestern states (California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas), organized by Hispanic Azlan activists, drawing upon military support from Mexico, would then begin a violent uprising, demanding a separation. They would sabotage infrastructure in big cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, San Antonio, and San Diego, and kill many (“White“) people there who do not support their cause.

It would be like Texas and the southern states finally seceding from the Union yet China/Russia/Brazil/Iran/etc using Texas, Florida, and smaller Gulf states as hostile anti-US entities and staging grounds for continued destabilization efforts against core USA. These days it looks to me like 100% of what the MSM produces and sells is propaganda for the powers that be.»

Many, probably not a majority, of journalists try to put interesting actual news in the inner pages, in small side articles, where they are not likely to be noticed, and to escape the “spike” of the editor.
But it is nothing new, my usual quotes:

    H. MacMillan, 1963: «It is wonderful not to read the newspapers — except a rapid glance through The Times. It makes such a difference. One feels better, mentally and morally, not to be absorbing unconsciously, all that steady stream of falsehood, innuendo, poison which makes up the Press today, apart from purely informative sections.»

    G. Orwell “Looking Back on the Spanish War”, 1943
«Early in life I have noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, but in Spain, for the first time, I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts, not even the relationship which is implied in an ordinary lie.
I saw great battles reported where there had been no fighting, and complete silence where hundreds of men had been killed. I saw troops who had fought bravely denounced as gcowards and traitors, and others who had never seen a shot fired hailed as the heroes of imaginary victories; and I saw newspapers in London retailing these lies and eager intellectuals building emotional superstructures over events that had never happened. I saw, in fact, history being written not in terms of what happened but of what ought to have happened according to various ‘party lines’»

    T. Jefferson, 1814: «I deplore with you the putrid state into which our newspapers have passed, and the malignity, the vulgarity, & mendacious spirit of those who write for them: and I inclose you a recent sample, the production of a New-England judge, as a proof of the abyss of degradation into which we are fallen. these ordures are rapidly depraving the public taste, and lessening it’s relish for sound food. as vehicles of information, and a curb on our functionaries they have rendered themselves useless by forfeiting all title to belief.»

Overall, a pretty good article with a fresh perspective on recent events that shatters the propaganda narrative that has ruled for decades. A new look at the events in the former Yugoslavia, which were the subject of the biggest propaganda ever seen, is particularly interesting, and we are slowly uncovering the reasons for that and concluding that it was not a local matter but part of a global project.

Related to this, we will specify a couple of things that seem local but shed light on much wider things, many of which are right before our eyes right now.

First, it was not just any conflict between Serbs and Croats and mutual killings during WWII, but a planned genocide against Serbs that has been carried out for centuries and reached its peak during the German occupation of Yugoslavia. That ‘conflict’ should not be relativised, but it should be emphasised that it was a genocide which monstrosity has not been seen anywhere in human history. Croats killed about 1.5 million Serbs in thousands of execution sites, sadistically, with unprecedented hatred, and in just one camp, Jasenovac, 700,000 Serbs (as well as a number of Roma and Jews) were killed.

That genocide was covered up by the communist authorities after the war, hidden and prevented from being presented in school textbooks. Now the attempt to reduce the number of victims and even deny Jasenovac, because it was bigger than Auschwitz, on which the whole narrative is based, which tries to establish control over the whole world, is topical. Catholics and Zionists are on the same task.

Therefore, there was not some tavern conflict between two drunken groups, but a systematically planned genocide of the Serbs, especially from the moment when the Serbian Church at the last moment, by not attending the Vatican Council of Florence, prevented the destruction of Orthodoxy, when all other Orthodox churches had already agreed to self-destruction and when the Catholic Church’s service was already performed in all the churches in Constantinople.

Secondly, due to ignorance of older history, there is talk of a certain Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, etc. that became part of Yugoslavia. This is not true. These are all communist fabrications. As early as the Dresden Congress of the Comintern, they had the task of destroying the Serbian corpus, and for this purpose, new nations were invented, Serbian territories were assigned to them, and those communist non-ethnic borders were declared by the West to be internationally recognised borders in accordance with their rules, which they called – international law.

This was the source of 90-ies conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. At the beginning of WWI, there was only Serbia and the Serbian territories occupied by the AU. The regions inhabited by Croats and Slovenes begged the Serbs to accept them into Yugoslavia because they knew that through assimilation they would disappear in one generation, as happened, for example, with Slovenes in Austrian Carinthia, Serbs in Bulgaria and Greece.

At the time of the Roman Empire, only the Serbs existed as a people from the Peloponnese to the Baltic, while the rest were created over time by historical engineering. So, we have that the Bulgarians, Hungarians and Croats were created by the Avar-Hun-Bulgarian Asian warriors coming to the territories of the native Serbs (Romanians are also Jesuit engineering of the natives under the name of the project Eastern Latins).

PS – I see that the old text appeared on the front page (What Race Were the Greeks and Romans? The evidence is clear — but often ignored), which I have not seen before and which is worth re-reading and establishing some of the things that started many current events.

Third, it is wrong to consider Slobodan Milošević a Serbian nationalist. He was a very intelligent man, a good politician and tactician, an excellent speaker, but he remained a Yugoslav for too long when all artificial nations were encouraged by the West (divide and rule) to turn against the Serbs.

He was trying to save Yugoslavia because in that way the Serbs would remain in one country and would not be broken into seven parts. Even after the departure of the Slovenes and Croats, he offered a Muslim president to be the president of this smaller Yugoslavia, but he, as an Islamic fundamentalist under the influence of the West, refused.

Milošević tried to prevent a conflict with America at all costs and establish normal relations. It is known that at a wider joint meeting with American politicians, he gave a sheet of paper to the Americans to write down everything that Serbs need to do in order for relations with America to be normal.

Caspar Weinberger answered him – You didn’t understand at all. You need to do everything that is asked of you at all times, now and in the future.

I think that Milosevic only understood the whole game in The Hague, which he thought would be conducted according to the rules of international law and that he would be one of the partners in it. He was subjected to torture in prison (for example, during his entire stay, the light was on during the night in his cell), he defended himself without a lawyer and was buried with tens of thousands of pages of court material.

When they could not find a single offence against him, they killed him with the drugs they forcibly prescribed him. If Milosevic had been a nationalist, things would have been resolved militarily very quickly and the Serbs would have avoided many troubles that happened to them later.

If a group has to hide their true intentions it shows a limitation and possibly is a sign of major weakness. Some groups may believe they are only strong and righteous if they can do anything without negative consequences. If so, they are willing to risk everything to gain the last bit of control which may seem insignificant to others. This “shooting oneself in the foot” has happened so many times I suspect there may be a powerful cultural impulse to be absolutely dominant. Part of the puzzle we see in the real world may be due to fights between very powerful factions. Some of these factions may be happy to settle for 99% control, while the others are perfectly willing to risk the 99% for everyone in order to reach the 100%. This is a do or die paradigm and anything less than full control is failure.

In other words, certain people want the world to recognize they killed all the people in Gaza gratuitously. The more practical factions generally support the 100% group, but are eventually forced to say, “Oh no, you lunatics are going too far…again.” The Ukraine mess seems similar except that it only works because the Ukrainians are tragically gullible.

…the security threat posed by NATO on Russia’s border.

Exactly what was this mysterious “security threat” on Russia’s border even supposed to be, which you left unspecified in your claim? At the time of the invasion of Ukraine, NATO countries had borders with Russian territory only in Estonia and Latvia. You seem to be geographically challenged and are merely repeating vague clichés that you have read somewhere.

However, now that Putin’s attempt to take over Ukraine has backfired, it now has a long border with the new NATO country Finland. In response he has attempted to invade Finland with criminal migrants from Africa and the Middle East. Do you also advocate a full scale invasion of Finland and Baltic countries with Russian troops for the sake of Russia’s “security“?

  187. Odyssey says:

During WW2 American planes took off from Italy and bombed oil facilities in Romania that supplied the German army. They flew over occupied Serbia, and many planes were shot down by the German army. Serbian peasants rushed to save the surviving American pilots and hide them from the Germans. They saved a total of 506 American pilots who later founded their own association.

Serbian peasants built a temporary airport on the mountain and were expecting allied, American and British planes, with weapons to fight Germans. At that time, there were almost no communist partisans in Serbia and the only anti-fascist movement was the Yugoslav Royalist Army (Chetniks). The Partisans/Communists were mostly in the future communist provinces – Bosnia and Croatia, where they used the genocide of Serbs by Croats and Muslims to recruit soldiers from those Serbs who escaped death.

Now, the secret agreement of the communists with the Croatian Ustasha and the German occupier to jointly fight against the Serbs is gradually being revealed. Although the Chetniks were promised help with weapons, the British and Churchill decided to change British policy (YU/Serbian king and refugee government were in London) and to arm the communists.

The Chetniks were left without weapons and although they had been the dominant army until then, they lost the war because of this (especially when at the very end of the war, seeing the outcome of the war, thousands of Croatian Ustasha and Home Guards joined the communist ranks) and post-war Yugoslavia thus became communist under the administration Tito’s communists. One can guess why Churchill betrayed the Serbs and armed the communists instead of supporting the legal government and the king.

The rescue of American pilots by the Chetniks was the subject of a movie called ‘Heroes of Halliard’, which was recently shown on Capitol Hill in Washington. Heroes of Halliard, had the honour of being the first Serbian film in history to be shown in the US Congress on Capitol Hill.
    https://www.fcs.rs/en/heroes-of-halliard-screened-at-capitol-hill/

Namely, in that very place, on Tuesday, March 5th 2024, this film inspired by the rescue operation of allied pilots behind enemy lines in war-torn Yugoslavia, had a special screening in front of high-ranking U.S. dignitaries and representatives of the Serbian embassy.

The film also shows the betrayal of the Serbs by the British, who sent them empty planes and previously delivered weapons to the communists. Books have been written about the rescue of American pilots – Betrayed Valor: The Unknown Heroes of Mission Halyard (The little-known story of the largest rescue mission of World War II…Based on the testimony of hundreds of American Airmen comes a story of bravery, betrayal, and hope…By the summer of 1943, Hitler had ruthlessly occupied most of Europe. Determined to stop him, the Allies are stepping up their attacks on the Romanian Ploesti Oil Fields…)

At the invitation of the Communists, the Allies (American and British planes) brutally bombed Serbian cities at the very end of the war, even though there were no Germans in them. Thousands of civilians died just like at the beginning of the war from the German bombing. Not a single Croatian city was bombed, even though Germans and Croatian Ustasha were still there.

55 years later, 1000 of American and NATO planes again bombed Serbian cities and civilians.

    A) a war between Poland and Germany
    B) a European War
    C) a World War

if you chose “A”, you are correct.

it did not become a European War until the Anglo-French backstabbed Germany by declaring war on the Reich, whereupon French troops invaded Germany and Brit aircraft began bombing Germany. Also note that that altho the Red Empire also attacked Poland in September 1939, no Anglo-French declaration against communist Russia was forthcoming. Probably U can figure out Y.

If one is going to be so pedantic, then we should say that Hitler started the war on March 15 when he occupied Czechia in violation of the Munich Agreement. This was what led to the Allied guarantee over Poland and insured that a German invasion of Poland would be followed by an Allied declaration of war. It also meant that no sane Polish government would ever sign an agreement over Danzig that resembled the Munich Pact.

He immediately and voluntarily came to Hague to attend the so-called ‘tribunal hearing’. They did not know what to do with him because they did not have any evidence of his war crimes. ICTY kept him for seven years without any hearing, trying to find some evidence, including the finding false and paid witnesses. After 10 years in jail, they had to release him because they could not prove any of his crimes and because he suffered from cancer and life-threatening hearth problems.

He was persecuted several times for the disrespect of the court, in total – 10 years (!!!) in prison, exactly the same time he already spent in the prison. The idea of those who created this tribunal was to keep him out of the country during the time when US/Nato countries were trying to make Serbia a total colony which would accept the secession of Kosovo and that would be impossible if he was there.

  207. Odyssey says:

Exactly 25 years ago, the American “invisible” F-117 “Night Hawk” bomber, which represented the pride of the American Air Force, and the aircraft around which stories from the realm of science fiction were spun, crashed into the muddy fields of the village of Budjanovci.

Thanks to the application of “stealth” technology, which at that time represented a kind of mystery, an advanced attack-navigation complex and high-precision aerial bombs of great destructive power, this aircraft was a real enigma for a large number of military experts and journalists, whose superiority on the battlefield field in “inspirational” texts often compared to UFOs.

After successful combat use in the war operations of the US Army in Panama, and especially in Iraq, the US command engaged these aircraft in the NATO aggression against FR Yugoslavia.

These aircraft were tasked with targeting land targets of the Yugoslav Army of strategic importance, command posts, communication systems, radio hubs, but also industrial facilities and elements of critical infrastructure. For this purpose, one or two aviation squadrons were engaged, in which there were 22-25 aircraft of this type.

According to the official data of the US Army, this aircraft made almost 1,300 sorties in Iraq, where about 2,000 tons of ordnance were used, with an accuracy rate of even 80 percent. The frequency of the use of these aircraft in the total number of airstrikes against Iraqi positions is evidenced by the fact that a group of 42 “stealth” F-117 bombers, which constituted barely 2.5 percent of the engaged fighter-bomber forces of the coalition, carried out 31 percent of the attacks during the first 24 hours. Despite the massive use of these aircraft in the opening part of the campaign, when the enemy’s air defence was intact, no losses or damage to these aircraft were registered.

The American military was soon faced with the problem of an uncontrolled outflow of military secrets of the first priority, which was the result of the downing of an “invisible” bomber by the Yugoslav Air Force. Unofficially, vital parts of the downed plane fell into the hands of Russian and Chinese aviation specialists. This knowledge was used for the development of their aviation program of 5th generation fighters, but also for the modifications and further development of missile air defence systems and radar-surveillance stations of different types.

The fabulous amount of money that was spent on the development and production program, as well as the purchase of new aircraft with “stealth” characteristics, started numerous discussions in professional circles about the effectiveness of “invisible” aircraft, compared to standard aircraft. The arguments also cited negative experiences in the war against the FRY, where information appeared that despite strong electronic jamming, several more “night hawks” were affected.

The Serbian army did not have Russian anti-aircraft weapons (e.g. S300), so the vertical range was limited and the Americans bombed from a higher altitude. The downed American pilot visited Serbia with his family after the war and befriended the Serbian officer who shot him down.

Since you cannot back up your silly cliché phrases with actual facts and could not answer the specific question that logically from them, you desperately resorted to stupid comments like the one above, an obvious admission of having lost the argument that you provoked, yet again.

However, I had already backed up my claim about Finland being invaded by migrants weeks ago (February 11, 2024 at 4:46 pm GMT):

    Aljazeera News
    December 14, 2023

Finland set to again shut its entire border with Russia
The decision comes amid renewed asylum seekers arrivals that Helsinki has labelled a Russian hybrid attack.

Approximately 900 asylum seekers from nations such as Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen entered Finland from Russia in November, an increase from fewer than one per day previously, according to the Border Guard.

From this information it is obvious that Russian policy has been intentionally threatening to the security of the Finnish people. On the other hand, Finland does not threaten Russians.

The challenge you face is to liberate yourself from the Russian financed brainwashing campaign being reflected in the alternative English language media. Struggling journalists, publishers and influencers will spew out almost any counterfactual stories in return for some Bitcoin fractions.

Unfortunately (for Serbs), Vučić is a deeply corrupt and blackmailed politician. As such it is ideal for those who rule the (Western) world. He started as a young nationalist and spent his whole life in politics. The backward masses still consider him a Russophile and a defender of Serbian interests, but they did not notice his overnight change of direction by 180 degrees (equivalent to Analena’s 360).

His current ideology is only money and the main tactic is demagoguery with which he tries to extract the maximum (for himself) from both the West and the East. Some think that he is Orbán, but he is much more similar to Scholz, only that he is incomparably more corrupt and has many more elements for blackmail. He is the most dangerous for Serbian interests, even more than the American ambassador who is his virtual superior. What they failed to do with bombs, the Americans achieved with ‘democratic’ changes.

There wasnt never signs of hostility from Russia towards Finland until very recently, after Finlands american, british, swedish and elite jewish banker-bought puppet government started to increasingly first collaborate with the Nato-alliance and elite jews and then publicly and intentionally provoke Russia for aggressions and responses, so that it would appear that Russia started it. The Nato and elite jewish narrative is always that american, british, swedish, Israel etc. are always the moral good, representing “western values” and “democracy” and that they always do everything right and Russia and China are always the opposite. Another tactic that they push is that they polarize that you are with them or at war against them.

Russia first took over Crimea, Georgia and now much of Ukraine after american, british and elite jews increasingly expanding the Nato-alliance towards east and building bases and weapon systems all along their, as well as on Chinas border. Now they are literally surrounded with Nato-weapons all along their border and aimed at them, with aggressive and false propaganda being pushed, as well as first illegal sanctions and theft of property being implemented.

We need to do same to american and british that they have done to others for hundreds of years now, or this never stops. These animals only understand legal force and nothing else.

MB: ‘On the anniversary of the bombing of Serbia – exactly on March 24 (2024) – NATO members “congratulated” us by accepting Kosovo as an associate member of the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO (Council of Europe)! Well done! And malice, and hatred, and corruption, and… – yes, it’s evil, but it’s an emotion! Good for you if you have any! There is hope, psychiatrists would say!’

The plan of Western countries is for the UN to officially declare – the genocide in Srebrenica. The very next day they would come out with the view that ‘genocidal creations’ cannot exist. It is a plan to destroy the Serbian Republic (Serbian half of Bosnia). There is also a plan to arrest the RS president (because he is close to Putin and because he signed the law that the German colonial governor cannot confiscate all the property of the Serbs) and to kill him on the spot in order to renew the conflicts in Bosnia and divert attention from Ukraine and Gaza.

And if not, then regardless of whether the RPF shot down the plane, and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of non-combatant Hutus, and whether globalist cunts used “Rwanda” to promote decades of military adventurism that killed even more innocents, it simply IS NOT THE CASE that Ron has shown the truth to be the complete opposite of the “official story”.

Unz says that three million Chinese were killed in Indonesia. But the Wikipedia link he provides for this says this:

Large-scale killings and civil unrest primarily targeting members of the Communist Party (PKI) were carried out in Indonesia from 1965 to 1966. Other affected groups included alleged communist sympathisers, Gerwani women, trade unionists,[14] ethnic Javanese Abangan,[1] ethnic Chinese, atheists, so-called “unbelievers”, and alleged leftists in general. According to the most widely published estimates at least 500,000 to 1.2 million people were killed,[3]: 3 [4][5][7] with some estimates going as high as two to three million.[15][16]

It wasn’t just Chinese – and the targets were communists – but non-Chinese, and it was half a million or maybe a bit over one million.

“Some estimates” go higher, so Unz says it was the highest guessed figure, three million.

Talk about picking and choosing what you want to believe.

Likewise, believing in one book that claims one thing about Rwanda (that it was Tutsis killing Hutus, not Hutus killing Tutsis). And backing this up by referring to a documentary that aired on BBC only once. What about all the other books – and eyewitness reports – that say the Hutus did the killings? What about all the other BBC documentaries that also show the Hutus were the killers?

Talk about picking and choosing what you want to believe.

In this article and the earlier one, Unz questions the veracity of mainstream sources. But not when they say what he wants to believe. BBC is a bad source if it says Hutus killed Tutsis. But BBC is a good source if it just once airs someone’s documentary saying Tutsis killed Hutus.

And in this very article he says Wikipedia is an unreliable source. But then links to Wikipedia as his source for saying three million Chinese were killed in Indonesia.

…But when you click on the link, it doesn’t actually say that.

They did the same during the bombing of Belgrade. They demolished almost all bridges, factories and other infrastructure.

For the first time, they used graphite bombs to destroy the electricity supply and everything that uses electricity, including the water supply. Workers used long brushes to clean the graffiti from the power lines, which caused short circuits and system crashes. That is why the Americans threw graphite bombs in remote and inaccessible areas to make it difficult to clean the power lines.

Since the waterworks did not work due to the lack of electricity, people waited in long lines in front of several natural springs in the city itself. Nato spokesman O’Shay gloated that the propaganda of Milošević’s television was shut down, ignoring that all hospitals were also left without electricity.

The opportunistic invasion that was launched from Belarus was clearly intended to stage a military coup in Kiev and then take control of the entire country, which Putin had decided did not have a right to exist as a sovereign nation.

The Ukraine stopped existing as a sovereign nation in 2014 after the coup orchestrated by the US. It became a US satellite/puppet nation.
If you were implying that Putin’s intentions were to annex all of the Ukraine, there’s zero evidence to support such a claim.
The intentions were to stage a military coup in Kiev and install a pro-Russian puppet government with Yanukovich and Medvedchuk. That would not result in any change of the Ukraine’s de facto sovereignty. Instead of being America’s puppet state it would be Russia’s puppet state. That also would result in achieving a humanitarian goal of ending the civil war in the Donbass.
When a military coup didn’t work out, Putin was happy to settle on conditions agreed with the Ukraine by early April 2024, which were no NATO membership for the Ukraine, limitations on Ukrainian Armed Forces size and capabilities, freezing the discussion of the status of Crimea, and implementing the Ukraine’s obligations under Minsk II agreements that were ignored and sabotaged by the Ukraine for years.
Then, in April 2024 Boris Johnson had a surprise visit to Kiev and instructed them to fight to the last Ukrainian, betting on the sanctions weakening the Russian economy and Western military aid allowing the Ukraine to defend and possibly retake lost territory. That’s where they’re at now, still fighting to the last Ukrainian and losing, with their recent “victories” comprised of acts of terror against civilians.

The Ukraine stopped existing as a sovereign nation in 2014 after the coup orchestrated by the US. It became a US satellite/puppet nation.

There was no “coup” in 2014, just a legitimate parliamentary vote, with an overwhelming majority, to change the executive government after the corrupt and widely reviled leader Yanukovich and his entourage had fled upon realizing that he could not win the early elections he had consented to a few hours before.

The intentions were to stage a military coup in Kiev and install a pro-Russian puppet government with Yanukovich and Medvedchuk. That would not result in any change of the Ukraine’s de facto sovereignty.

Thank you for exposing the extreme hypocrisy of the Russian position so clearly for all to understand. You are essentially saying that if Ukraine were led by Yankovich, who maintained a private zoo and had become “a pro-Russian puppet“, then it would be sovereign, but if the parliament chose otherwise, it would somehow lose this status. Are you one of his zoo animals?

…conditions agreed with the Ukraine by early April 2024…

Prior to negotiations the stipulation was that all the points of contention had to be agreed to for there to be a comprehensive deal. However, only some of the disagreements had been resolved. Therefore, it is just silly to try to make Boris Johnson the scapegoat and thereby justify Putin’s continued war of aggression.

Ron Unz is not sufficiently critical of Powers. I am the same age as she, and was her class at HLS. I was friendly with her, since one of my friends at the business school was her class at Yale (I’m a Harvard College grad) and we all played a lot of squash together both at Yale for undergrad and at Harvard while in grad school. You pick up a lot of scuttlebutt when you are studying and partying with these people as peers.

Samantha was treated like a star at the law school because of her war reporting and interest in human rights law. Everyone saw the special access she had to the political heavies at HLS and Harvard University, which paves the way into the Establishment, since Harvard is the ultimate finishing school of that Establishment. And she was not alone.

One of the five leaders of the Tiananmen Square Massacre (Chai Ling) achieved the same celebrity and special treatment at HBS. I remember being nauseated by her exploitation of that event and her questionable leadership within in, all in an effort to gain access to powerful Wall Street and corporate America.

The most famous example of this, however, was Barach Obama’s rapid rise out of HLS, after falling under the wing of Laurence Tribe, who supplied him with strong support in his effort to write onto the prestigious Law Review (nb: he had no chance of grading on).

What’s critical to understand in these cases is that extremely well connected professors, with the kind of pull that lands a student on the fast track into Bain Capital or the State Department or into Congress is afforded not to the smartest students, but to the most useful. In each of these cases, there were powerful forces beating the career paths of each of these individuals, and that was known to many students and classmates of these three individuals.

Barach Obama told his personal story, a completely fabricated myth of overcoming racism that even his maternal grandparents had displayed, as well as the absence of his father, and he played this story up while adopting the language snd cadence of an African American with a “Black” Chicago accent every chance he had. The reality, of course, is the exact opposite. Barach was the product of a meeting between a female CIA operative studying in a government language program in Hawaii, and an African counterpart invited by either State or CIA for the same purpose during the height of the Cold War, when the US and the USSR were both recruiting talented prospective African leaders or spies. Barach’s maternal grandfather was also in the CIA and led a key Middle East spy outpost out of Lebanon. The killing of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia—and this occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia as well—was an official CIA anti-communist operation during which anthropologists, doctors or public health officials from the West would serve as spies to identify families who either were communist or believed to be sympathetic to communism in SE Asia. Barach’s mother, who the former President has only referred to as a scholar of anthropology, was one of these spies sent to Indonesia and elsewhere in SE Asia to identify individuals , often ethnic Chinese, that later would be killed. At least two million people were killed in this way, and Barach’s mother was a part of this. So our first Black President was as well ensconced into the prerogative of our Deep State as George H W Bush even if his cover story was far more effective precisely because it was the exact opposite of reality.

Looking back, it is clear to me that Obama was guided through HLS by powerful individuals for that reason. He could attract the very groups that had historically fought against the DoD or CIA, even as his inner motivations were perfectly aligned with the forever war Bushes.

This very same pattern applies to Samantha. She had a big leg up as a young journalist working for Marty Peretz’s publication. And Marty, like Tribe, has serious pull. His small seminar at Harvard was one of the most coveted tutorials to land—alongside the freshman econ seminar taught by Marty Feldstein or the government one led by Henry Rosovsky. So Marty had Samantha under the same special wing that Tribe some years earlier had afforded Obama.

When you see these patterns and then follow the rapid ascent of these individuals later, it starts to make sense. Samantha was never going to report the narrative on Rwanda that ran counter to what our CIA had planned for that country. To wit, it has long been a strategem of our Deep State to elevate a minority over a majority in order to stoke class or racial tensions and resentment. Divide and conquer. It informed our long-standing strategy in Iraq (Sunni minority over Shia majority), as well as in Rwanda. This explains why the US is selectively outraged by human rights violations only where it suits our empire’s goals of the moment, and Samantha, who was already drunk on fame and special treatment even before her famous book was released a few years after graduation, was never going to question much less critique our Deep State’s gross hypocrisy—especially at a time when its own power relative to rivals was so large and its ambitions so vaulting that the arrogance had been perverted into virtue, hence the horrible mistakes under Clinton in the Balkans and under Bush in Iraq and Afghanistan.

No, the story of how we end up with psychopaths in our highest levels of government is always the same: Napoleon was not the only smart grunt in the French army’s artillery (where ability to run quick calculations was a necessity so the clever soldiers clustered there), but he was the one willing to fire cannonballs into crowds of innocent, starving citizens, and so his willingness to step over the cadavers was handsomely rewarded. And so it was for Barach and Samantha insofar as each knew how to present a compelling but also false cover story to achieve mass popularity via a totally false narrative that provides convenient cover for the darker plans that they know and willingly accede to. Power not only corrupts. Power only allows entrance to those who’ve proven their corruption. (Like the gangs or mafias requiring you kill before they trust you with real work inside their criminal network.)

This is what I have observed first hand, and through my own study of history and current events as they have unfolded. And in light of these observations, I find that Ron is either a tad bit naive or a great deal forgiving of individuals that deserve much more scorn than they receive from a public that never can penetrate beyond the cover story and mythology that is invariably the opposite of reality. But for those who can and do penetrate into the underlying reality, it is critical not to pretend that the ugliness found there is an accident or a bug, as opposed to the enduring feature or goal of the system.

A hyper-power will not be constrained by a system of international law that requires agnosticism with respect to the internal policies of other countries with different values or demands, but it needs a cover story or mythology to show that its breaking of centuries old practice and legal or diplomatic tradition is actually an honorable act. What better way to accomplish that than to invent a duty to protect that is selectively applied? Jeff Sachs currently complains that the US doesn’t do diplomacy but only regime change, and that was going on from the US empire while Samantha was still an undergrad, and even earlier as a Cold War rival. It seems a bridge too far to believe that Samantha didn’t know upon which side her bread would be buttered by writing only enough on human rights violations to create the CIA’s amd DoD’s pretext for endless war and imperial expansion but not enough to systematically and completely characterize the problem. If Samantha subscribed to the “mistake” school of governance (ie, seek all of the accurate knowledge currently missing in order to fix the problem), as opposed to the “conflict” school of governance (ie, mischaracterise facts as propagandist truth to reinforce power on a given side), then she would never have been plucked out of her Yale undergrad class and placed on the fast track. It was never an accident that she rose so fast and far on so little by way of analytical merit. And that’s how it’s always been.

The reality is that the Jews of Israel are in the process of killing or displacing all the Palestinians of Gaza. If Hamas wins, then the Jews of Israel will have to coexist in a country with the descendants of the Palestinians who were kicked out of their homes by the Israeli Jews’ parents and grandparents. Frankly, it was probably better that Kagame did that and seize power than go along with the Ashora Accords which would have resulted in a prolonged mess, including plenty of massacres (see Burundi). Regarding defectors like Nyamwasa, they don’t claim more Hutus died… (which is what you seem to be suggesting). Thats just the UofM researchers. The people I’ve met who were soldiers in the Rwandan Patriotic Front in 1994 were actually upset that the RPF restricted them from doing counter massacres (although these certainly happened) and actually executed Tutsi soldiers for it. I’d been very impressed with Diana Johnstone’s book on the subject and I was very pleased that she dropped me a note correcting some of my errors, and now has written an article focusing directly on Power and certain aspects of the “humanitarian” ideological movement she played a major role in launching. I’d highly recommend it:

I also learned that quite a few elements of Johnstone’s (rather hostile) Wikipedia that I’d relied upon were erroneous, and this even included the year of her birth, which was actually 1931.

More importantly, although it had been heavily discussed in her memoirs, which I’d read a couple of years ago, I’d forgotten to mention that she’d actually spent nearly a year in Yugoslavia during the early 1950s, then also lived in Paris with her journalist husband for much of that decade. So her background both in Yugoslavian and general European issues was even stronger than I’d indicated.

I have been inspired by this article and thread to take an interest in the R2P which has plainly been abused and badly needs an oversight structure which might, for example, determine that, yes, at this stage, you can enter the country, if necessary using the minimum necessary force, and rescue people who need it and house and feed them in safe zones within the country. No use of bombing at this stage etc…..

Beyond that I think you are plausibly suggesting that the shooting down of the Burandi and Rwanda President’s plane was very likely the work of Kagame’s forces but you go over the top when you seem to suggest that the horrifying massacre of Tutsis and allied Hutus that began immediately using primitive weapons in a blood thirsty way was not planned and set off by Hutsi government people. Was anything like that done, even just as part of immediate revenge? You don’t indicate that it was so and it seems unlikely that Tuts soldiers did anything like that. So whatever the precise number of Tutsis slaughtered savagely, primitively, and by deliberate Hutu policy it was 10s or 100s of thousands, even a million or more, and it was what reporters like Fergal Keane saw the evidence of at the time and it is no scandal that it is the kind of savagery that has dominated Westerners feelings of guilt and determination (if that is not too strong a word) that it should be “never again”.

You may care to read or listen to this balanced FT piece, and if you disagree …. why not take on the FT in its own columns and/or comments?

You may be interested in this recent Spectator article on Rwanda and Kagame’s rule more generally:

It is not, as the title implies, the whole truth, but it contains a number of admissions that are rarely made in mainstream Western outlets.

Thsnk you for that important-if-true account of the neo-cons motives.

If? Straight from the horses mouth… excerpt from The Neoconservative Cabal by Joshua Muravchik:

Neoconservatives sought action in Bosnia above all out of the conviction that, however remote the Balkans may be geographically and strategically, allowing a dictator like Serbia’s Slobodan Milosevic to get away with aggression, ethnic cleansing, and mass murder in Europe would tempt other malign men to do likewise elsewhere, and other avatars of virulent ultranationalism to ride this ticket to power.

  251. Not to support the insufferable Madelaine Albright, the “Saddam caused the death of 500,000 Iraqi children” story is patently false. There was a retired UN worker making the rounds with the story to justify the US attack on Iraq. He was coming to speak at the U of Texas in Austin and some outraged friends told me about him and the number claim, which, if true, was a serious charge. So I looked for his source; none given. Then I turned to the UN Numbers; if he had dome such a thing it would be reflected in the population pyramid and the UN demographic figures.

It turned out that this was the UN number for the total number of Iraqi children under the age of five that had died during the Iran-Iraq war. Iraq had a high infant mortality rate before the war and it didn’t come down during the war, partly, I suspect, because of wartime spending. But to suggest that he murdered 500,000 kids is like claiming the US President murders a million kids every four years because there is infant (UN under age 5) mortality in the US.

I handed him the Xerox copies of the UN numbers after his speech and asked where he got his numbers. He looked at the UN numbers and he said “interesting, I’ll get back to you”. Of course he never did. Anyone who doubts me can simply look up the UN mortality numbers- this is not a “maybe”; it appears top be an outright lie. The big questions are: Who sponsored and paid for his trips to universities?; Why didn’t the press catch this obvious falsehood?; Who was he and how did he become the spokesperson- is there a back story?

@the 500,000 dead Iraqi children story.

The point is not whether or not Saddam caused the deaths of 500K Iraqi children. The fact is that pre-war Iraq was a very rich country with large oil production and good public services, including healthcare.

At the moment when Albright was asked if it was worth causing the death of 500K Iraqi children (the exact number may not have been known at the time, but the approximate scale was), Albright replied – it was worth it.

That’s the point, that she and the neocon team in power at the time thought that number was quite realistic, and even if it wasn’t completely accurate – they would be ready to achieve that number – because it would be worth their goal.

Serbian aggressive baboons lies as always and is not the wonder, considering their forth bringing for being in today Ukraine, as part of evil imbecile fake Jews, or belonging to their tribes of tribal not evolving culture, better known as Khazar.

Serbians are hoodlum tribal monster arrived in the region after 6th century, where the King Heracles of Roman empire offered them Christianity (in their image, after sociopath Constantine Emperor known for killing own son en boiling his wife in oil, as well as killing and torturing seven thousands other Chatars during purge in 235 AD in Ikea today Turkey) as well as territory of today Serbia, previously belonging to ancient Illyrians.

Bosnian are ancient Illyrians, the solemn and real owners of much today Balkan and 100% of ex Yugoslavia territory, before arrival of Rome, that was more than forty times attacking its sovereign ancient people with the oldest DNA material on the world. Serbian DNA material as per Vincha Institute of 2019 consist of 49% Turks DNA material, confirming Khazar background while Bosnia’s DNA material showed to belong to Illyrian descent; 40% (the highest percentage of anybody) while 20% Teutons or Germans. Only 15-20% belongs to Slavic/Khazar DNA.

There is no Serbian republic in Bosnia. That what they call”smrda republic” is on genocide and with illegal army of paramilitaries and after genocide, both in 1992 and 1995 gained territory they assuming to belong to them. That was genocide third in a row; from 1912-1924, 1943 and 1992-1995. Watch this and be own judge:

Watch the Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing of the city of the Zvornik:

That is fantasy supported by Russia and their 200 years long influence there. Serbs are useful idiots for Russian Geo-strategic goals and their claim is Adriatic See as well as Baltic countries. All these land masses was belonging to Christian Cathars, vegetarian as Lord Jesus Christ mass of people roaming in freedom till moment Constantine/Vatican, Turks, Serbs and Russian killed them all.

Hey Poturica, I though that you have the exact same genes as Serbs as you are descendants of converts to Islam? BTW, Albanian liars are also competing with you in trying to steal Serbian Illyrian roots/heritage. Also, what happened to your lie about about being Bogomils? You need to make up your mind about which lie to pursue. Even Nazi Croats were lying at some point about being Illyrians, but abandoned it for some more believable lies with fake maps and some “Croatian” Kings fiction. You are all converts, as you know, supported 100% by Contemporary Nazi Germany in it’s sick revenge against the Serbian people as we messed up their plans in both WW1 and WW2.

As you know, Poturica lies even more than a Turk! Your lies about Vinca DNA and pseudo-Porphyrogennetos are making it obvious.

You are/were the victims? Weren’t you WW2 partners of Nazi Germany just like the rest of the 90s “victims”: Nazi Catholic Croats, primitive Muslim Shqiptars/Albanians, Catholic Slovenians? As you know, even your separatist leader, Alija Izetbegovic, was a Nazi soldier [1], and Jihadist post-WW2. Below are your Muslim priest giving Nazi salute [2]. So much for your victimhood.
