A couple of weeks ago Rurik, one of our most frequent longtime commenters, suggested that we add a “Breaking News” section, providing newslinks to external articles along the general lines of the influential Drudge Report:

I’d like to take this opportunity to make a suggestion.

I used to visit Drudge from time to time, just to get the latest news. If there was a plane crash or coup somewhere in the world, Drudge would usually be one of the first, if not first to have a link, if not a headline.

But Drudge has become ‘woke’ of late, and so he’s as useless as the MSM.

Which leaves a dearth of news sites linking to news stories. Especially with an objective interest in what is news per se, rather than their eternally agenda-driven slant, as you well know.

So the suggestion I have, is for The Unz Review to start a ‘Breaking News’ section.

If Russia shoots down a Turkish jet, instead of going to CNN or the NYT to read how ‘Russia’s provocations against NATO and International Law have become untenable and a dangerous threat to world peace and stability’.

We can get a more measured and nuanced look at breaking news, with links to the stories from a vast and wide-array of international news organizations.

From there perhaps your website could allow for commenting on the breaking news, or not.

But since there is such a dearth of objective news sites, or those linking to them, I just wonder if such an addition to the (amazing and inimitable) Unz Review wouldn’t be resoundingly popular. Perhaps even one day competing with and eventually replacing Drudge as the go-to site for breaking news on the Internet.

Thank you for your consideration,

the humble commenter ~ Rurik

He soon added that our own commenters would be ideally suited to providing such a crowdsourced presentation of important stories ignored by the MSM:

contemplating this, I wondered- ok, that would require someone to peruse the international and domestic news for interesting and consequential ‘breaking news’.

And who better to do that, than the notoriously news-savvy Unz Review commenter-commentariat?

Such a space would certainly need to be moderated for chaff, (considering the trolls that inhabit your site), and commenting would slow it down, but perhaps at the start, give it a boost.

Already your willing staff participate ‘gratis’, posting breaking news on existing threads, occasionally admitting it to be off topic, but on a “Breaking News’ addition to your site, it would be appropriate for all topics to be covered, so long as they were of interest.

I even wonder if a kind of Drudge-style format wouldn’t work well. With several news stories displayed on the page, with the most recent or most news-worthy at the top.

Just ‘thinking out loud here…’

I’m sure you’re familiar with WRH.

http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/

And that site is enormously popular simply by posting breaking news, with some slight commentary from the site owner.

But that site is bogged down with enough ads to alienate many people, so there again, another opportunity to fill a vacuum.

It amazes me that there is such a dearth of objective news sites on the Internet. Especially as Drudge was so popular, (and lucrative and influential). But now he’s become woke, and it seems like there’s simply hardly anywhere to go for interesting and consequential news that isn’t part of the American Pravda cabal.

This seemed like a very good idea to consider, especially since I’d recently noticed the rise of other newslink-aggregation websites. Therefore, I have now gone ahead and built it, generally following the simple design of the Revolver website.

Since this is an alternative media website, with a very energetic and ideologically-diverse commentariat of thousands of regular readers, I’d hope that they would soon become source of the overwhelming majority of our newslinks. All frequent commenters—those currently provided access to the Opinion Response buttons—are now also allowed to suggest possible Newslinks, though I’m currently applying a restriction of 3 per 24 hours. To suggest a possible Newslink just click the Suggestion box at the top of the Newslink page and add it in the following very simple format:

  • (Required) URL of Newslink on First Line
  • (Required) Suggested Newslink Heading on Second Line
  • (Optional) Description of Newslink on Later Lines

If your Newslink is approved, it will be added to the top of the page. Depending upon how things go, I may need to adjust some of there parameters over time.

Given the increasingly harsh Social Media crackdown on the distribution of unorthodox opinions, I think these sorts of aggregation pages may become more important in the future.

The Newslink section is now displayed in the top menu and also the Sidebar. I’d look forward to hearing your perspectives and suggestions.

For the concept to have value, it needs three features:

    — Topics/Categories will be needed to group links in a meaningful way.
    — Posting to the correct category needs to be enforced so all of the vile agitprop is contained away from real news.
    — “Blocked Topics” should be supported like “Blocked Commenters”.

This would allow the gibbering hate freaks to have their own section that is normally invisible to rational, civilized adults.
    ____

As an interim measure, immediate gains could be made by using the existing “Blocked Commenters” functionality to suppress NewsLinks from uncivilized TROLL posters.
    ____

An alternate concept that might be almost as useful and possibly much less work. Harvest links from posted comments to generate the NewsLink resource.

Limiting the roll-up to the first 2 or 3 citations/links would avoid accidental list flooding.

I think this is a great idea, but I do wonder why submissions are limited to those by frequent commenters only. I’m a frequent reader of Unz Review, but I really don’t have much to say, and I’d rather spend time reading than posting comments.
Nonetheless, I often come across news items not widely covered that I think are worth letting others know about. For example:

Isn’t there some way that we lurkers could contribute to your aggregator?

Drudge succeeded in large part because (besides being a workaholic) he was the first, and thus had the greatest number of news connections, who usually provided news tips gratis. One aggregator with good connections is worth any number of those without.

Good suggestion, this would also help seed this new link aggregator if commenters stick to their established pattern of posting in the comments in the beginning.

It is trivial to build these link aggregation services, but to provide any value, you have to provide some sort of filter to users on which links might be most worthwhile to them. That might mean “vetted by Ron,” as suggested above but doesn’t scale if a lot of links come in, or letting readers vote, either by which links they click on or click a “like” button most, which is what most such sites do and is prone to all the problems with mob voting.

Ideally, the user would customize a filter for themselves, along with algorithms that help that filter operate, but then you get into complex tech that I doubt Ron wants to get into (no, not AI snake oil).

At the very least, it might be worth adding a like/trash button for links at some point, so we don’t just get a gush of links with no info on what others found worth clicking.

You subscribe to feeds, which could be from a name website or an aggregator. I have about 50 feeds that generate hundreds of article links daily, including from UNZ.

Inoreader works on cellphones and desktop. If you like cellphones, you can also add apps. Reuters, APand virtually everyone offers an app that will push all the stuff you could want at you. You can choose the political left, center right or whatever. You can even bury your head in the sand and remain in your comfortable echo chamber.

I prefer to use as few apps and other gizmos of Big Tech as possible. I don’t need anyone pushing anything at me. I’ll decide what stories I find interesting or salient.

That’s why I prefer to go to websites like WRH, and peruse the aggregated news for what I consider worth my time to read. But WRH has so many ads now, that the site has become obnoxious.

You can choose the political left, center right or whatever. You can even bury your head in the sand and remain in your comfortable echo chamber.

    Hmm..

Your impertinence is telling, I hope you know.

The reason I, (like many others) enjoy the Unz Review so much, is because it doesn’t manacle its perspective to any ideological straight jacket. It welcomes views from the left and right and wherever, and then subjects them all to the crucible of free speech as the gladiatorial arena of ideas.

As such, it is the consummate website for understanding our world, and the trends and trajectories there of.

What better place then, for people to use as their go-to website for breaking news and intellectual fodder for the mind, not having anything pushed at us from any ideological agenda, but rather all there from a very wide-ranging swath of the world’s more thoughtful readers (and writers)- all contributing, and there for the clicking, if you’re so inclined.

Displaying the optional description was taking up too much vertical space, so I’d hidden it. However, if it’s present, I’ve now added a clickable “Show Details” link that displays it. So people interested in seeing the description before trying the external link can now do so.

I’d also added a “Today’s Total” on the Sidebar Newslink so that people can see how many Newslinks have been added so far today. Because of the software architecture, it’s actually a little more difficult to hook it up to the “New” feature used for comments, but I’ll try to do so, which will allow people to visit the page when they see a number of extra Newslinks have been added.

Since the number of Newslinks can grow rapidly, all the totals are for today.

    (2) Also, the new Newslinks since the last time you visited the page are tinted blue, just as with the new comments on a regular article.

The links can of course be no better than the stories to which they point. In recent years, there has been a falloff (I wonder why) in reporters’ logical ability and writing skills, as well as their sense for the informational needs of their audience.

Please give a few examples, you say. For example, it is a commonplace for a Wall Street Journal article, rather than being quantitative, to use far-less-helpful adjectives; usually, many, often, mostly, some, and so on. Or, for example, staying with the linkable, one would think, WSJ: Writing that Covid has caused air travel to sustain a “slump.” Or, in selecting an expert to interview, selecting someone who, unbeknownst to us, is not a superior choice.

It’s charmingly naive to think that the “international news” is less influenced by corporate power than our own msm. On a wide spectrum of policies, you will find that the msm throughout western countries hums a similar tune. To find a deeper and broader understanding of any issue takes time, effort and the desire to do so, none of which are possessed by the average citizen and all of which separate the knowing from the majority of a society which rewards or rejects.

  45. The work of Unz is heroic, but it the medium / long run winning the internet information battle against the tech giant seems close to impossible. Nevertheless, the indignation gives us the force to boycott now with an extreme extreme unprecedented rigor the MSM.
So go to Unz, RT, and others platform out of the oligarchic orbit….talk physically with your friends . Of course the MSM shall lie and say they still have big audiences, or even channel directly unlegitimate funds from god knows where to counter balance the lack of customers. I don’t know… But it in the end make no mistake, it’s not a matter of money. They want your soul . And that, if you quit, they shall not have…

  46. Anon[125] •Disclaimer says:

The Daily Beast Cheat Sheet and Slate’s The Slatest are two examples of this. Both have changed the concept since their respective launches years ago, but Cheat Sheet is closest to the original idea.

My company had a site like this programmed and hired several writers who could log into a CMS to post. We paid $5.00 a story, which considering the number of fields they had to fill in was embarassingly cheap. We programmed in some auto-editing like capitalization rules for the title. We had a tweet field that automatically posted to our Twitter account. There was a strict character limit on the length of every field, since writers always go long, even for $5.00.

On thing we did was to require the entry of keywords upon login to the CMS. These were pattern matched against recent posts and, importantly, against in-progress posts from others, to prevent duplication.

We allowed for up to two URLs, one to the best source, and one to a “hat tip” source.

  47. The timing of the great new addition to UR could not be better. Within all the fall-out of the 2020 election debacle, one very tangible benefit to the public has been the realization that virtually all of American media ( that’s MSM and Alternative) is utterly co-opted and can no longer be trusted nor respected.

The existing respectability of UR applied to the addition of the news section will likely see a vast increase in readership and hopefully begin to re-set the bar of bi-partisan/ objective journalism to a renewed professional level.

Ron, what are the chances of Facebook letting UR out of the woodshed? The fact that UR has done so well in weathering this FB censorship is a compliment to UR’s holding to a higher standard.

Regardless, it is easy to predict great things to come for UR…

This is a great idea and I appreciate the execution so far. Given the rate at which helpful new features are being added, I’m sure that in the coming days and weeks it will get even better. I have no specific suggestions, but I’d like to say what I think made the early Drudge so popular and so important to all of us.

    1. He had a nose for news. You knew that 90 per cent of the links would go to some jolt of amusement, incitement or amazement. I hope that the community of commenters here will develop some equivalent sense of electricity.

    2. He wasn’t afraid to surprise his readers with articles that resisted their pre-conceived notions of truth. I was never convinced that he was a “conservative”, but that he wasn’t averse to broadcasting ideas that were common to conservatives or were simply politically incorrect.

    3. He boldly resisted the standard MSM narrative. He could always find a source that twisted the pravda approach into something meaningful and he did so courageously.

    4. The site couldn’t be pigeonholed. Maybe that’s what the three previous points add up to. His top headline was the topic of discussion at every watercooler in the universe that day. It wasn’t always a comfortable topic.

Composing these points is a sad exercise, given the awfulness that the Drudge Report currently embraces.

I suppose there could be a problem with moderation seeing as there will be a high volume of articles published, but at the same time I don’t think each article submitted by Unz readers would garner more than a couple of comments each, unlike the featured articles which gain anywhere from a few dozen to hundreds of comments.

This would be a good feature as many news websites nowadays are very heavy handed in moderating their comments section, and in some cases (like Yahoo News), have suspended user commenting all together as the people replying were engaging in too much crimethink and punching holes in the controlled media narrative left, right and centre. Other news aggregators like Reddit face the same problem in that the moderators of news forums like r/news or r/worldnews are anything but neutral and are very partisan in their moderation.

Such a feature would be great in my opinion and would increase engagement a lot.

Since most of these links are by commentators, many of whom are ideological in nature, the links may not link to valid sites, and finding a way to sift through them might help. Though I have no idea how that might be implemented or the difficulty it might require.

  69. @The Spirit of Enoch Powell

Here’s an idea that might scale the moderation work down to size: Enlist the commenter who sourced the article as the moderator for comments under that article.

Write a subroutine that sends comments directly to that commenter’s personal comment list, and provide him with a button or way of approving or disapproving. That way, the Unz reader who recommended the article would serve as monitor.

Make this optional for him, of course, not required, so as not to scare away crowdsources who don’t want that responsibility.

It would be fun to see how it goes…

Yes, I’m giving some thought to that since otherwise the possible flood of links each day might be too much for people to easily filter. I’m although thinking of adding Categories, so that people can focus on the subset of e.g. Foreign Policy or Economics links.

Well, I moved back to Palo Alto in the early 1990s and it’s been many years since I even visited Jackson Heights, but I certainly would have strongly recommended it at the time based on cost/quality, and proximity to Manhattan. Moreover, I think it’s considerably gentrified in the last dozen years or so, meaning quality-of-life should have improved.

On the other hand, it was/is very heavily immigrant, probably around half Hispanic and maybe a quarter Asian, so probably not ideal for people concerned about immigrants or unhappy about being part of a small white minority. Also, I think it and neighboring Elmhurst were hit very hard by the Covid-19 outbreak, though that seems to have mostly died down in NYC.

True. Here in Cuckstain the rats think TYR is leas news items – from 1960s, whilst ignoring current TNB!!!

  81. @Buzz Mohawk

Two problems with that, there is of course the issue of time commitment, I think most people will not want to engage in moderation activities, currently Ron Unz does the moderating but this is his full time job. This would also result in inconsistent moderating between users. Could you imagine someone like A123 moderating comments on Israel-Palestine? Or even someone of the opposite school of thought who would only allow anti-Zionist comments through?

Obviously Ron Unz is going to be the most knowledgeable about this as this is his website, and adding a comments section to each user posted article may not even be technically feasible, but if it is feasible, one possible solution would be to just allow unmoderated comments (with the spam filter still in place of course) like is the case in Anatoly Karlin’s blog, where your comment is published as soon as you hit the send button and you have a 5 minute window to edit things.

This unmoderated method would work if the comments on different articles is low, which I suspect it will be in most cases. But in the case a certain user article does “blow up”, then standards moderation could be applies by a real human (Unz himself)

But as I said earlier, this might not even be technically feasible and one would have to put out a trial run to see if the unmoderated comments section method will work and be conducive to a good commenting environment, Anatoly Katlin does moderate his blog comments, but he doesn’t pre-moderate them meaning he takes down off-topic comments if he wants to.

This is all for Mr. Unz to decide I suppose, but this proposed feature would be very cool.

Just one browser resisted these efforts: Gab. Our opponents hate the folks in charge of the Gab browser with a passion that rivals the scorn that they heap on the much more radical Andrew Anglin.

This means that they consider the Gab browser to be THE MAJOR THREAT in their efforts to silence us. In fact, their attempts to harass, de-fund, de-platform and silence Gab founder Andrew Torba and his website are so extreme and fanatical that they almost defy description. The software architecture would make allowing comments on Newslinks difficult, and as you suggested, the large number of Newslinks each day would anyway result in a negligible number of comments, greatly reducing any potential value.

Indeed, it’s easy to imagine that a large flood of daily Newlinks will discourage most visitors from bothering to do more than slightly glance at them. Therefore, I’ve now added a new feature aimed at reducing this problem.

Just as with ordinary Comments, regular users of the system may now “Endorse” a given Newslink by clicking the “Agree” button, and have their names displayed. This allows readers to see which Newslinks are more worthwhile, especially if they’re familiar with particular Commenters.

Also, there’s now a checkbox near the top of the page that hides all non-endorsed Newslinks, only displaying those that have been endorsed. This should make it easy to reduce Newslink clutter.

However, the total number of Newlink Endorsements plus Newslink Suggestions is limited to three per 24 hours. This is intended to discourage those Commenters providing Newslinks from also making too many Endorsements. Ideally, there should be a partial division of labor being those providing Newslinks and those making Endorsements.

I’d like to make three comments, two of which are a little off topic for this thread.

Comment 1: My on-topic comment is that while I find the Aggregated Newslinks to be a nice addition to the Unz Review, I find that the typography of this new feature to be somewhat jarring and inconsistent with the style of the rest of the Review. The intense blue headlines in an unnecessarily large font verge on the garish typography of the early web, circa 1995. (I thank God that at least the headlines aren’t flashing!)

The typography of the rest of the Review is much more tasteful and easier on the eyes, and I’d suggest that the headlines of the Aggregated Newslinks be rendered in the black text and smaller font that’s used for most of the rest of the Review. If you must use blue, please tone it down.

Comment 2: One problem that a lot of news sites have is that they display dozens and dozens of stories at any given time, but many, if not most of those stories are left up for days, even weeks in some cases. For a daily reader, it’s tiresome to see so many stale links every day. For example, the New York Times and SFGate both have this problem. The WSJ also has this problem, but to a lesser degree. My solution for the Times is to just use their “Today’s Paper” link each day. For the WSJ, I just read the paper edition and ignore their website.

I see this stale-link problem at the Unz Review as well. The colorful “NEW” labels are quite helpful in sorting the new from the old, but I’d like to suggest another option that might be helpful in addition to the “NEW” labels.

At the top of each Unz Review page, beneath the masthead, is a gray “topic” bar with lots of links that sort the Review’s content into various helpful categories (ie. foreign policy, science, newslinks, etc.). I think it would be nice if there was a “NEW” category on that topic bar that linked to a listing of all Review posts that had been posted within the previous few days, or perhaps within one week. Such a “NEW” category would be especially helpful to regular visitors. A new or an occasional visitor would still see the Review’s full offering via the home page, but a regular visitor would know that the “NEW” link offers a quick way to see what’s new at the Review.

Comment 3: Tyler Cowen has a nice daily feature on his Marginal Revolution blog where he posts a short list of interesting links that he’s recently come upon, along with a sentence or two commenting on each link. At the Unz Review I mostly read Sailer, Karlin, Unz and Thompson, and I’d enjoy it if each of those bloggers posted a daily or weekly list of links that they found interesting. I’d note that Cowen’s daily links often attract a large number of comments and that this would be an easy way for Review bloggers to similarly generate interest and engagement with a minimal amount of effort.

That’s a reasonable criticism. As I mentioned, I roughly mimicked the layout of the Revolver link aggregation website, but blue is the link-color here. This Newslinks page really is very distinct from the rest of the website, so a difference in layout is reasonable, but color-schemes are very easy to change if others also agree with you.

The problem is that our website generates a great deal of new content each week, probably well over a hundred items if we include the posts by the bloggers. Except for some of the older blogposts, most of this is already conveniently displayed on the Home page, organized by columnist and category, with “NEW” markers for the most recent pieces. So your “New” page is pretty much the same as our existing Home page.

    Two minor points..

I think putting the relevant category link on each item listing would be an improvement. Each category link could be clickable and link to a list of all items of the same category. You may have decided not to do that for a good reason, but I’m not sure what it is.

Similarly, using WordPress TAGS would improve searchability. Perhaps each poster could be asked to supply up to three tags per news story. Tags can be user generated, but with a text-prompt or some other device so people are encouraged to use existing tags. Just as category links can (and IMO should) be clickable, tag links should generate a list of all news items identically tagged.

Actually, the Categories are optional, but I’m hoping most Newlink contributors will gradually begin to include them.

I’ve now gone ahead and made the Categories clickable. When you click on one, the system filters all Newslinks by that Category. Using the selection field at the top allows you to reset the display to “All.”

Similarly, using WordPress TAGS would improve searchability. Perhaps each poster could be asked to supply up to three tags per news story. Tags can be user generated

However, allowing user-defined Tags would be difficult and cumbersome, since contributors would probably define them in a multitude of different ways.

That’s a reasonable point. Someone had argued that since the Newslinks being in blue is too garish, so I might just change them to black. Since they’re large font, probably the blue is overkill.

IMHO, the garish blue usernames are now over powering the black Newslinks.

    Perhaps make the:
    — Newslinks a less garish, darker blue
    — Usernames black or brown/gold

Your comment made some sense till you singled out CNN only. You got divided n conquered.

Buying Reddit gold has no affect actually. Just shows how popular your comment or post is. When it got too popular it had to be controlled. That killed it. And it serves no purpose on the Current state of Reddit.

There are 3 constants on the current Reddit.

Attack on the right of the political spectrum. If only it attack all sides. As that is the right thing to do. Keep the politicians on both sides on their toes.

Holocaust reminders at least 3 times a day on the front page. Gotta brainwashed the new and young users.

And finally attack on China. If you search for China in any news or political subreddit, be ready for the bombardment of negativity. It is weird how much redditors are supposed to hate this country half way around the world.

Off-topic, but I was hoping you could give me your assessment of the likelihood of the Democratic party, I suppose with Deep State support/cover, having stolen the presidential election, as PCR and others claim.

One thing that amazes me is the lack of discussion in the US, of the need to reform a political system which is completely corrupt and obsolete on so many different levels.
It’s like doing the exact same thing that does not work over and over and expecting better results… while at the same time no discussion about a meaningful reform…

I’d appreciate your assessment, I would even hope you could write an article on it.

Off-topic, but I was hoping you could give me your assessment of the likelihood of the Democratic party, I suppose with Deep State support/cover, having stolen the presidential election, as PCR and others claim.

    Hard to say…

As I’ve said a couple of times, I regarded both Trump and Biden/Harris as such exceptionally awful candidates that I didn’t pay much attention to the campaign. Despite the MSM saying (once again) that Trump had absolutely no chance, I doubted the polls and thought he had maybe a 1/4 chance of winning, so the close results didn’t particularly surprise me.

I’d pointed out to a few people that since Democrats were so much more likely to vote by mail, it seemed quite possible that Trump have a big lead on Election Night and declare himself the winner to the cheers of his partisans. But once the mailed ballots were later counted, Biden would pull ahead and Trump and his followers would cry “Fraud!” So everything happened just like I’d said it might.

Was there massive Democratic fraud? Maybe, maybe not. There do seem to be some pretty suspicious aspects of the vote-counting in Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta, and other corrupt Democratic-controlled cities that tipped the election to Biden in key states. We’ve published some articles making that case, but others that have challenged it. And I don’t have the interest or technical expertise to decide between them.

On the other hand, it’s absolutely 100% clear that the MSM/Tech stole the election from Trump by entirely covering up the Hunter Biden corruption scandal and banning it from Social Media. It seems certain it would have tipped enough votes to get Trump reelected.

But Trump also stole the election from himself by his total political incompetence. His base had been white males, and because of his policies and his campaign strategy, the polls show that he hemorrhaged their support, which cost him reelection. Meanwhile, he directed much of his campaigning effort toward winning black votes, even though they’re only a tiny portion of the electorate, and about 90% anyway voted for Biden, just like they had for Hillary Clinton.

So while there may have been major fraud, I think these other factors were probably more decisive.

Meanwhile, in California Trump lost by 40 points, but Republicans did surprisingly well, unexpectedly picking up several Congressional seats, probably partly due to the backlash against all the crazy Black Lives Matter rioting and looting. However, since Trump was so totally useless on that issue, it probably didn’t help him much.

Only Upper East Side Liberals such as Ivanka and Consort Jared could be delusional enough to believe in and convince Daddy of the black Republican chimera. Another factoid. I’ve made a few more small changes in the Newslink Aggregation system:

    (1) Selecting a Category is now required, and you’ll be prompted if you don’t.

    (2) Clicking on a Contributor’s name now filters all Newslinks by that Contributor, which can be reversed by pressing the “Display All” button. When filtering, the Contributor’s name is displayed in bright blue at the top, and this links to his Commenter Archive.

I just attempted to add a newslink and got the msg that I must select a category. I planned to select All because the report is about media, and none of the categories are correct for my link. Please add a Media category and change my link to that if it’s an acceptable report. Eliminating the All option might be okay, but I’ve found that many reports should appear in multiple categories. Pertinent reports may not show up when filtered.

BTW, I liked the blue better than the black type on the report headings. There’s just too much black now, IMO. Thanks for the new feature.

Also, Trump could’ve sent out another stimulus check. Given the widespread economic misery that has engulfed much of America (especially the hardscrabble rust belt), it’s not inconceivable that many of his supporters saw no reason to vote for him if he was going to abandon them.

Meanwhile, in California Trump lost by 40 points, but Republicans did surprisingly well, unexpectedly picking up several Congressional seats

Southern California is pretty different from SF and Silicon Valley. People there aren’t into social activism. So I think the Republicans still have some potential down there, but they need Hispanic and Asian votes.

I guess you didn’t like my idea for a Media category. Or may be you’re just not paying much attention to the Newslink feature right now.

I posted a link this morning and just noticed that someone else posted the exact same link several hours later. I had been checking to make sure any links I would post were not posted already because that just seems like common courtesy to me. Repetition is no fun. But I also got the impression that links were being monitored because they don’t show up right away so I figured duplicates would be caught. Are links being approved before they post? Can you prevent duplicates?

Also, if a Media category doesn’t work for you, how about a Miscellaneous category for reports that don’t seem to fit any of the categories listed? Thanks again.

I just don’t think that adding a Media category makes any sense. In some respects, the overwhelming majority of the Newslinks would fall into that category, but otherwise they mostly fall into one of the others.

Anyway, the software architecture of the website has had a limited number of particular categories from the very beginning, and adding an entirely new one called Media doesn’t seem worthwhile at this point.

Contrast this to submitting a comment, where one receives the clear, explicit message, Your comment is awaiting moderation, along with a preview of exactly how the submitted comment will appear if approved.

It would be surprising if this lack of confirmation has not resulted in a considerable number of duplicate submissions.

  150. Hey Ron — can you help publicize something kind of important?

In February and March of 2020, as I read all I could about respiratory infections and watched where COVID-19 was having its worst impact, I realized that the dry indoor air of winter makes viral respiratory infections much worse (this is not the only factor, but it is a very big one). The data have born this out.

    The mechanisms are simple:
    (1) Mucociliary clearance, the mechanism by which foreign particles are carried out of the lungs, functions poorly in very dry air as mucus dries out.
    (2) Dry air can lead to damage of surfaces of the throat and lungs (in the same way that dry air gives you cracked lips). This makes you vulnerable to inflammation and infections at the site of the injury. The virus can enter through such fissures.

I made it my goal to let the world know about winter humidifiers against COVID and I mostly failed as I am not well-known and the level of noise on this is extreme. But alas. Once more into the breach.

Since nobody will listen to me, here is leading COVID-19 expert Prof. Akiko Iwasaki of the Iwasaki virology lab at Yale Medical school and her team speaking:

For those who like to read scientific papers, a 2020 review of respiratory virus seasonality with some 130 citations explains things well (figure 4 says it all):
    https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/pdf/10.1146/annurev-virology-012420-022445

    And for the lay person:
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/11/18/winter-covid-19-humidity/

Although this appeared in the Post, it is still the most underrated aspect of fighting this pandemic.

The effects of humidity are dramatic. Florida and Texas have been almost completely open while New York, Pennsylvania and Michigan have been largely locked down, and yet those lockdown states have had much worse disease and death than those humid states. Humidity is the difference because indoor air is generally temperature controlled everywhere.

I bet a few hundred thousand lives will be saved this winter if this becomes widely known.

The Newslink section already uses the same Ignore/Follow lists as the regular comments. So if you add a commenter to your Ignore list, his Newslinks are hidden. Commenters on your Follow list have their Newslinks highlighted with a golden box.

Adding similar options for websites and categories would take a bit of work, and I’m preoccupied right now.

Incidentally, these sorts of suggestion comments should be made in the Bugs/Suggestions open thread. You’re very lucky it happened to come to my attention.
