4. Summary of the Movie:
Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) an eight-year-old boy who dislikes school
because he can’t fit in which resulted to his failure at every exam. He finds all subjects difficult,
and is belittled by his teachers and classmates. But Ishaan's internal world is unimaginable
where lies an infinite possibilities and wonders that no one can even imagine, which is hard for
Ishaan to express at others. He is an artist whose talent is unrecognized, a hidden gem.
Ishaan's father, Nandkishore Awasthi (Vipin Sharma), is a successful executive. Given his
standing, he expects all of his son to follow his footsteps. His mother, housewife Maya Awasthi
(Tisca Chopra), is supportive mother but in a verge of giving up because of frustration and fear
that his son Ishaan might not have a good future. Ishaan's elder brother, Yohaan (Sachet
Engineer), is an exemplary scholar and athlete, which Ishaan is frequently reminded of.
After receiving a never-ending bad grade reports, Ishaan's parents decided to send him to a
boarding school. There, instead of a good results Ishaan’s parents are expecting, Ishaan suffers
from bullying and discrimination instead, resulting him to be frustrated even more. Despite
being befriended by Rajan (Tanay Chheda), physically disabled and one of the top students in his
class, he still feels out of place and nowhere to belong.
Ishaan's dark world suddenly changes when a new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir
Khan), joins the school's faculty. An teacher at the Tulips School for children with special needs,
Nikumbh's teaching style is rather, unique. He first appeared as a silly clownlike to make all of
the students happy, On the other level of differrence from that of his strict and stupid
predecessors, and he is quick to notice that Ishaan is unhappy and contributes little to class
activities.
Now due to his curiosity, he reviews all of Ishaan's work carefully and then realized that his
academic problems are due to a intellectual disability called dyslexia. On his day off, Nikumbh
visits Ishaan's parents and asks if he can see more of their son's work.
He witness Ishaan’s different kind of creations, he was speechless and stunned by the
uniqueness and extraordinariness of one of Ishaan's paintings, and tells his parents that Ishaan
is a bright child who is different from the other children because he process information, things
that is unlikely different to the children In his class , but Ishaan's father is suspicious that the
explanation is simply an excuse for his son's poor performance.
Nikumbh challenge Ishaan’s father to read the Chinese text on a box and belittle him when he
cannot, therefore giving him a glimpse into Ishaan's experience of what he had endured during
his school days. Nikumbh explain everything what and why Ishaan is doing that so far, an
dyslexia. He tells them that providing an extra and careful love and care extra will help Ishaan
along the way, instead of belittling him, look at what the child had done so far, highlighting the
boy's artistic ability evident in his many paintings and other creative works.
Nikumbh tells a story of a boy who also had an dyslexia to bring up the topic in class, and offers
a list of famous people who were dyslexic, including Albert Einstein. Which Ishaan were
surprised from. As the students are leaving the classroom, Nikumbh asks Ishaan to remain
behind and reveals to him that he too experienced the same difficulties with dyslexia.
Confidently believing in himself to bring Ishaan back to his own feet, Nikumbh successfully
obtained the school principal’s permission to become his tutor and to give ishaan a chance as
well to stay at school while improving little by little. He attempts to improve Ishaan's reading
and writing by using different techniques. Gradually, little by little Ishaan soon develops an
interest in language and mathematics, and his grades improves as well. Nikumbh was successful
to made ishaan’s father be ashamed to himself and realized of what has his kid had endured so
far.
Towards the end of the school year Nikumbh host an art fair for the staff and students. The
competition is judged by artist Lalita Lajmi. Ishaan, with his strikingly and unbelievably creative
artstyle, is declared the winner and Nikumbh, which his teacher, had surpassed. Everyone was
so amaze and all eyes and hands are all on Ishaan.
With the results and effort of everything Nikumbh had done so far, the principal announces that
he has been hired as the school's permanent art teacher, which, of course made Nikumbh
happy. Then following the next event, Ishaan’s parent meets Nikumbh again. Watching Ishaan
slowly grow into a fine child in a distance made ishaan’s father very emotional. Ishaan's father
can’t thank Nikumbh enough for what he has done to Ishaan so far, then Nikumbh just tell him
to take a good care of Ishaan. Before leaving, Ishaan immediately runs back to his teacher and
happily toss him in the air.
- The main character had a lot of struggles and challenges. Bullying will be the most case.
Since he can’t do many things right, a lot were belittling him. Even his very own father is
getting aggressive towards his mistakes. Frustration and depression are the most common
cases of effects of all this which can make a child shattered all of his self confidence and
might prove to get hard to stand up again.
5. Indicate the giftedness of the main characters: (provide narration proof of his/her giftedness)
Difficulties test the courage, patience, perseverance and true character of a human being.
Adversity and hardships make a person strong and ready to face the challenge of life. There is no
doubt that there can be no gain without pain. That’s what Ishaan’s story is all about. Despite
being powerless, he endured, and endured, then endured until the right time for him to shine
has come. A little star is not noticeable among others, but when it shines, you will be blinded by
it’s beautiful elegance and will shine the most among the others. Ishaan is the little star. That’s
what makes him a very gifted person.
6. Interventions made to address the learning disability on the movie: (indicate the process(es)
mad by the teacher (Amir Khan)
Being understandable to the child helps greatly than I ever think. Nikumbh stays understandable
even Ishaan were being ignorant due to his disability by helping him improve in lots of ways like
teaching Ishaan how to write, speak, draw, interact, and a lot more without any exchange.
Interacting with him as much as possible also helps him improve build his self confidence little
by little because the child knows there is someone supporting him no matter what so he need to
do all his best.
7. Implication: (after watching the movie what do you think are the possible implications to the
following domains below)
8.1 Yourself- I really do learn a lot. In searching for ways to help children with learning
disabilities, with the help of the movie and the teacher Nikumbh, I’ll remember looking for ways
to help them help themselves. My job as someone is not to “cure” the learning disability, but to
give them the social and emotional tools they need to work through challenges. In the long run,
facing and overcoming a challenge such as a learning disability can help them child grow
stronger and more resilient. That is what I have learned atleast. I really adore that teacher
7.2 Society- as everyone says, society is a cruel place. It is the main core for everyone and
everything that strives to be the best and tries their hard to survive. When we talk about
kids like Ishaan, one question resides, “what can he do?” Some of us view them as “weak”
ones, but we were wrong. Just to be given a right time and right effort and some help, even
you as a normal person would be surprise what can a weak person can do inside to the
society
8.3Education- Education is the foundation of all things. Even children with disabilities needs
them. You can’t say that they can’t keep up to the school just because they have learning
disabilities, that’s where they shine the most. An educated person is nothing against an
unbreakable person who ain’t giving up no matter what.
