“Every Child is Special” Reflection Paper

This is my reflection for movie titled “Every Child is Special”. This movie is a story
of a little boy named Ishaan Awathi, 8 years old. He has “Dyslexia”, a learning disorder
that involves difficulty reading due to problem identifying speech sounds and learning
how they relate to letters and word. Also called a reading disability, dyslexia is a result of
individual differences in areas of the brain that process language.

Ishaan is known as a lazy and naughty boy by his teachers, classmates and even
his parents. Although they don’t know that Ishaan has this kind of disorder. Ishaan were
always getting in trouble at school for being misbehaving and out of focus from his
lessons. Sometimes he was caught by his teacher daydreaming and getting low grades.
He even cannot read according to him, “the letters are dancing”. On the first day of
school, Ishaan’s teachers were upset by his pooor performance in class. I felt sad for
Ishaan because was bullied by his classmate, everytime he got the wrong answer and
scolded by his teachers his classmates laugh at him.

Ishaan’s parents sent him to a boarding school hoping that he will improve but
still he doesn’t. Instead he became lonely and home sick.

Fast forward, then there was a new art teacher of Ishaan named Ram Shankar
Nikumbh who spread joy, hope and positiveness in life. He breaks all the rule of how
things are done by asking his students to think, dream and imagine, and all the students
responds with enthusiasm, except for Ishaan. Thanks to Mr. Nikumbh because of his
time, patience and some motivation he helps Ishaan find himself and change the way he
act towards school and learn to appreciate himself even more.

I, as a mother I always think that every child has their own timeline and own way
of understanding things. We should not compare children and we should always think
that every punishment we give to them everytime they’ve failed doesn’t do any good to
their development.
