TECTONICS IN ARCHITECTURE

All semesters were with a major

design problem which revolves throughout the
period while the final term gave us an alternative
between a design thesis or research one.
Few exercises to explore the idea and to break a rational notion of design, to free the mind…
The study covered a
wide range of topics from History & Theory, Adaptive
reuse & Conservation, Sustainable design, Public spaces
at Urban level etc. Whereas, electives like Modernism &
Japanese Architecture, Sketching, Photography,
Visualization & exploration with craft and design gave an
opportunities to explore our own interests and
capabilities!
Studying few works of different architects, an attempt was made to have their ideology in design.
DESIGN -01 |Prison and Rehabilitation Center

The design was an attempt to

demonstrate the concept of paradox through the site
context and the program brief which designed
accordingly. The paradoxical theme was achieved
through locating the site in a crowded public area in
and around the Bhadra fort in the old city of
Ahmedabad and proposing a prison and
rehabilitation center there.

The design was approached though the site analysis

and understanding different quality spaces in a
building – Jail. A mind set-up was in the process of
new thoughts to achieve desired spaces, as we were
not constrained by any restrictions but to experiment
to the fullest to have a design solution and to build
our own design language.
The idea was to reflect a depressed
mind of a prisoner and imagining a built
environment to relax yet a strict one as a tool to
mould his twisted mind to unfold to be a better
human being at the end. Various line diagrams were
processed to reflect it at the same time consciously
responding to the site boundaries and developing it.

The prison block was
consisting of three floor plates having laterally
and accessed from both lift cores and
staircases.
The block was connected on upper level to
the admin block and the release department
on back of it.
The structure was of
steel having a mesh covering it from
outside and the whole block was
wrapped by concrete ribbon as seen in
the image which continues to be a part
of recreational activities further.
The framework of Second
semester was based on mainly historic
interventions, adaptive reuse and theory.

We were asked to study any existing

structure and rethink for its reuses as per the
current condition and proposal for a
betterment to conserve the ancient art in
form of carving, paintings and building.

Also to look back into historic interventions,

DESIGN -02 |International Film Festival Center, Goa

We had to design on a site with historic context for

which, Goa was selected to have an international dialogue in the field of
media, majorly – films. And the program was finalized as an international

film festival center with an institution on a contoured site on the banks on
Mandovi River with a shipyard next to it. The site is situated next to the
world heritage precinct which includes Church of Bom Jesus with six other
major basilicas nearby.
Site location showing the surrounding World Heritage Precinct and the and the river
The design process was a pure experiment with the site topography , a
contoured one and secondly it was a green area covered with trees all around which itself
was giving it’s own identity quite similar to a forest. Also as one drives through the road
along with the site, a continuous view of the river front pleases the mind.

So firstly, as per requirement of different functional areas, rough diagrams were made by
tracing the contour line present on site. Further, not to break the view of water body, these
lines were rotated to an angle which also satisfied it’s orientation towards the wind direction.
And finally, considering tree positions after over imposing the lines were chosen to have a
courtyard around them to have breathing pots throughout the built space.

Design Stages | Site layout | NTS

The breathing points which were the
courtyards in design also are transition point to access from
one functional zone to the other.

Two separate entries were designed not to disturb the student

activities in institution – a private zone and a large public arena
– auditoriums, the film festival area. The entry for the festival
was designed in such a way that the movement of people
would be upside-down from roof top to the inner core areas to
three major auditoriums and the admin area.

DESIGN -03 | An Urban Insert, Mumbai

Third semester was based on handling the urban context of a place,

more towards understanding a city and its lifestyle.

To have a culmination of different cities within, the city of Mumbai was decided to be taken for this project.
Obviously, designing a public space in Mumbai was a vast challenge economically as one of the mill lands
was finalized as our site in Dadar area. We had mainly three intentions, 1. to recover the land price; 2. To
design a public space and 3. Waterfront development as the site is located on the seafront. And also we
had a common program for everyone to regenerate the money and making the proposal self sustainable
economically,

through parametric or generative design

A new vocabulary was experimented in
design to represent a growth of a city-

Conceptualizing the design to match the skyline of the city

CRZ-II (By Laws)

Buildings shall be permitted neither on the seaward side of the existing road (or roads proposed in the
approved Coastal Zone Management Play of the area) nor on the seaward side of the existing
authorized structures.

F.S.I. to be considered,

1. Hotel and Hospitals-1.99

2. Other -1.33
3. Allocation of land to BMC 4 acres - Ambedker Memorial (F.S.I can be added to remaining
12 acres.)
It was a huge site covering approximately
4. Commercial parking is not included in F.S.I
of 12 acres of area(costing Rupees 3,500 Crores of land
price) and the permissible area to built up was of 18 acres.
A common program was designed inclusive of a hotel (200
rooms), an apartment (100 dwellings) and Ambedkar
Bhavan spreading on 4 acres of land.

And above all an individual program was to be proposed

to meet all criteria's from regenerating the cost of the land
to a people centric place to design in a city like Mumbai.

Following the line of development tracing the footprint of existing

blocks
To have a design clue, existing road network was traced to have a pattern was created and developed for guidelines
To fulfill the criteria's, the site was divided clearly
into three zones, a private one – High-rise including Hotel Block
below and apartments in-between having the parking space as a
buffer zone and a public zone spread out on the ground level,
Ambedkar Bhhavan.

An individual program – A food hub was proposed to have a variety

of cuisines and in turn to collect a cosmopolitan crowd for a public
space as also the city of Mumbai represents.

spread out on ground
As one of the design constraints was to demonstrate the structural systems,
the use of cellular beam system was adapted to have large and clear span structure at
ground level to connect the crowd to the sea visually and to have its own identity still being a
public arena.

On lower level a no. of courts were designed to segregate a huge crowd into the smaller
one having all food varieties in the food hub.

DESIGN THESIS
EXPLORING TECTONICS IN ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE USE OF STRUCTURE
(An inquiry through design as a correlation between inside)

The fourth semester was to have thesis which had a research base and
the scope of area was selected with my interests to study Tectonics in Architecture to
demonstrate it into the design.
Abstract

“. . . structure is columnar, planar, or a combination of these which a designer can intentionally use to
reinforce or realize ideas. In this context, columns, walls and beams can be thought of in terms of concepts
of frequency, pattern, simplicity, regularity, randomness and complexity. As such, structure can be used to
define space, create units, articulate circulation, suggest movement, or develop composition and
modulations. In this way, it becomes inextricably linked to the very elements which create architecture, its
quality and excitement.”
(Charleson Andrew, 2005, pg no.1)

Even being one of the primary concerns to design a building; the notion of using structure consciously or
unconsciously brings to us the final built environment as a three dimensional entity – space- enclosed by a
form. Exploring further the research revolves around different types of structural elements through certain
examples with respect to their prominence with the time period they belong and the experimentation to
achieve desired results in the field of engineering and building technology.
Analysing more on the relation between structure and space - the expression it gives to space - the tectonic
character and the tactile nature of the spaceare being investigated and few assumptions to design a built
mass has been proposed to examine and to see how differently or similarly one can translate those
guidelines through a design language.

DESIGN THESIS
Majorly, as the title suggests - An inquiry through design as a correlation between inside andoutside, the idea
was to have a simple program – an institution where the relation between the built and un-built can be
explored effectively. So A Naturopathy Centerhas been selected as one can relate the functions of a
building through the nature directly. And also the concept of surface tectonics is being experimented and
defined consciously to try to come up with an own vocabulary.
The site has been finalized in Navi Mumbai – Sanpada as a chance to experiment to a neighborhood to the
city of Bombay and having different environments with different characters of infrastructure surrounded to
deal with the context to it rather than having an obvious site for the same.
As we can see through the analysis and the various
examples further, structure is a very fundamental
and essential part of a building and one expresses
this notion of it potentially through different factors
to design it. These factors can be categorised as the
physical parameters to judge a building visually
such as; aesthetics, proportions, material and the
technique to build etc.

Thus, “tectonics are the various ways of designing a

building with the help of structure and even
consciously putting the same thought while designing
its structural elements and its application, as a pure
designer.”
Hence, on the basis of my understanding of it and my personal opinion few assumptions
have been made to come up with a design solution, keeping the same notion of tectonics
through a built form. For that all experimentations till the date have been considered as
an improvement in technology and other factors simultaneously such as new materials
and their way of application in design to achieve a desirable three dimensional space to
feel it, to express it and to demonstrate it functionally too.

So having all this as a database, I don’t intend to show or judge how innovative the
structure is or its application rather than my focus would be on the use of structure and its
expression contributing towards the space making and segregating from one to another
through it, without any articulation.
Here after, the slides include few projects from undergraduate time period with competitions.
The fourth semester was to have thesis which had a research base and
the scope of area was selected with my interests to study Tectonics in Architecture to
demonstrate it into the design.
