The Drawing Board

Judged by Ron Slade.

This month Ron has selected two winners – João Alves and Cashel Cahill
– with very different sketches.

João Alves

João Alves says his sketch shows an imaginary

building environment in a post-Covid-19 world. It
is intended to illustrate how structural engineers
can contribute to the design of future spaces by:
Ò| using temporary structures
Ò| designing smart and truly modular structures
Ò| creating new flexible and adaptable building
structures
Ò| restructuring existing buildings for new uses.

Cashel Cahil

‘The sketch was intended to explain the structural behaviour
of the frame – the initial proposal consisted of galvanised steel
portal frames with multiple braced bays used to distribute the
significant uplift loadings to the pad foundations that would
develop due to the large, open elevations.
‘Estimated material weights were provided to assist with
costing, as well as enabling an approximation of the total
embodied carbon of the proposals using “A brief guide to
calculating embodied carbon” in the July 2020 issue of The
Structural Engineer.’

Ron Slade is Structural Director at WSP. Ron received his BSc First Class Honours in Civil Engineering at City
University, London and became a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1971 when he was
awarded the Institution’s A.E. Wynn prize. He was first appointed as a director in 1982.
Ron is also the author of Sketching for Engineers and Architects, published by Routledge.

DON’T FORGET TO SUBMIT YOURS...

To enter, submit a sketch to [email protected] together with a short description to put it into context (150 words). Sketches must be hand drawn
