ARC 357: RURAL/URBAN ENVIRONMENTS
PROGRAMME ONE (WARM UP SCHEME):

EXPLORING EMOTIONAL SPACES AND NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS AS A TOOL FOR


DEVELOPING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES.

INTRODUCTION

Living environments, designed and built by architects, have an extraordinary impact on human beings’
lives. What induces feelings of joy, satisfaction, fear, a sense of belonging, security, ease, and comfort,
both in private and public spaces? Does the physical layout solely hold responsibility or is there another
significant aspect that plays a crucial role?

Architecture and interior design are intricately intertwined with emotions. Their goal is to craft spaces
with distinct atmospheres that prompt specific behaviours and elicit emotional responses. For instance,
a shopping mall is designed to generate an inviting ambiance that encourages visitors to shop (Lehnert,
2011), while the architectural design of a Gothic cathedral, with its unique and awe-inspiring
atmosphere, might evoke a sense of reverence.

Here the theory of Emotional Spaces is introduced, referring to a connection between space and feelings.
Emotional spaces are neither visible nor tangible, yet bodily perceivable (Günther, 2017) and have an
impact on an emotional level and evoke feelings, that then can be felt physically

The creation of a connection to one's surroundings might emerge from transforming personal Emotional
Spaces into the fabric of urban and constructed landscapes. This transformation can foster happiness,
satisfaction, a sense of security, and ease within spaces. Deliberately integrating Emotional Spaces into
the design process, alongside recognizing the significance of identity within the environment, could
pave the way for planning approaches centred around human related approach (Günther, 2021).

Nature-based solutions provide a promising approach to design by harnessing the power of nature to
address various environmental challenges. Green infrastructure, such as urban parks and green roofs,
can also provide numerous benefits, such as improving air and water quality. These solutions, rooted in
the principles of sustainability, biodiversity, and biomimicry aim to simultaneously enhance ecosystem
services and improve the well-being of communities.

By integrating nature into design, the architect can create green spaces, such as urban parks, landscapes,
and green roofs, which not only provide recreational opportunities but also help mitigate the impacts of
climate change, such as urban heat island effect and flooding. Additionally, nature-based solutions can
contribute to the preservation and restoration of ecosystems, fostering biodiversity and providing
habitats for various species.
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Campus is divided into various
zones, including the Academic, Commercial and Residential zones. These zones require interventions
to improve the user experience at these areas. Each student is required to choose a suitable site for the
assigned design.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Programme are:
• For students to gain understanding of the use of Nature Based Solutions (NBS) as Inspiration
for Conceptual Development in Architectural Design.
• Acquire the knowledge and understanding of how to develop Resilient Communities
• For students to innovatively create and Design emotional spaces by using Nature Based
Solutions and approaches.
• For students to be able to creatively design mobile structures that will create enjoyable and
reflective activities, modify climate, and showcase the capabilities of ecologically responsive
design.

THE PROGRAMME
The programme seeks to encourage students to appreciate the concept of Emotional Spaces and the
use of Nature Based Solutions as well as provoke their creative instincts that are applicable to the local
African Context and KNUST community. The various proposals are targeted at creating habitable
mobile structures adopting Universal Design Principles and Barrier-free Strategies. The structure
designed should serve the objective of any Nature Based Solution chosen in terms of form, design
consideration, and architectural concept. The proposed structure should be water and energy self-
efficient. The Scheme should also be aesthetically pleasing, conceptually intriguing and functionally
useful for the targeted users.
Each student is expected to provide a design proposal for the 12 assigned schemes not exceeding
15sqm. The design should also be replicable (Be a prototype/standard design).
Task Submission Date
1 Introduction of Programme and group formation. 12 Groups for; 15th & 16th
Scheme 1: Washroom for Community Branding January, 2024.
Scheme 2: Mobile Cafeteria
Scheme 3: Learning pod
Scheme 4: Mobile Library
Scheme 5: Mobile Clinic
Scheme 6: Mobile Pharmacy
Scheme 7: Drama Theatre
Scheme 8: Emergency Shelter
Scheme 9: Mobile Kindergarten
Scheme 10: Hawkers Pod
Scheme 11: Tree Mini-Mart
Scheme 12: Tree House
2 a. Research and present a chosen design principle, concept or an idea 17th January,
through case studies, sketches, etc. for chosen scheme. 2024.
b. Research into the Nature Based Solutions and Emotional Spaces to
create resilient communities.
c. Present analysis of selected sites (use a scaled site plan) and analyse
the activities that takes place in the structure (Note: site area should not
be larger than 15sqm)
d. Provide a detailed brief, an accommodation/spatial programme
schedule, functional relationship diagrams, and conceptual process
(from evolution based on chosen design principle) of the proposed
space.
Note the isues related to Climate, Culture, and Construction (3 Cs)
3 Provide design drawings for the proposed solution (Emotional Space) 25th -26th January,
• Block plan (1:100), floor plan and sections (1:50) 2024
• Elevations (1:50) and construct 3D impressions in context
• Show critical details in (1:20 or 1:25) to explain your structure
4 a. Model of the proposed design solution in context is to be presented 1st February, 2024
b. Animations are encouraged
Note: The work must be very neat, well-organized and legible from a 3-meter distance

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All the work should be presented on not more than 5 no. A1 sheets with appropriate headings, labelling
(title block) and boarders. Finished physical models of appropriate scale to explain and demonstrate
creativity of the student shall also be submitted.
Assessment Criteria include:
• Documentation and Conceptualization of design solution.
• Site considerations (Site Plan, Site Layout etc.)
• Vivid conceptualizations of the scheme.
• Block Plan, Floor Plans, Sections, Elevations.
• Critical Details
• 3D Impressions
• Physical/Conceptual Model

Date of Introduction: Tuesday 16th January 2024
Interim Jury (Design proposal): Thursday-Friday, 25-26th January 2024
Final Jury (Design proposal): Thursday, 1st February 2024
